Imperialism was a globally widespread discontinuous historical phenomenon at the end of the nineteenth century. Imperialism, however, is also characterized by continuity and still affects contemporary society. Currently, imperialism is taught in secondary school textbooks with a focus on economic interpretation of the motivation behind imperialist expansion. The presentation of imperialism is unidimensional and merely consists of discussions on early theories of imperialism. Recently, the academic discipline of history has carried out diverse researches on complex aspects of imperialism. In addition to traditional unidimensional subjects - economic exploitation, political dependence, etc.- more multidimensional aspects of imperialism such as complex cultural changes and interdependence have been explored. The field of history education is also trying to overcome dichotomous interpretation of history and now focuses on the dynamic interactions among cultures. Therefore, current treatment of imperialism in textbooks does not reflect recent research trends. Furthermore, to cope with the changing trend, history education has to be changed to enable students to critically carry out historical discussions and reconstruction. Although the need for multidimensional understanding of history is increasing, methods for translating such need in classrooms with concrete practical methods have been insufficiently discussed. This study proposes teaching and learning methods that can be applied in history classrooms for multidimensional understanding of imperialism as history. A comprehensive theoretical frame that encompasses recent researches was built and using the frame, presentation of imperialism in textbooks and recent research outputs were critically reviewed. Then, teaching and learning methods that are based on new interpretations and that can be applied to secondary school classrooms were proposed. Furthermore, teachers' evaluation and students' reaction were surveyed to verify practicality and learning effectiveness of the proposed teaching and learning methods. The proposed teaching and learning methods focus on reconstructing contents based on learners' level of knowledge and understanding. The goals of the proposed teaching and learning guideline are the following. First, materials are presented in ways that new interpretations are easy to understand. Then, existing and new interpretations, which are in contrast with each other, are presented for comparative analysis. Finally, students are taught to recognize the possibility of diverse interpretation of historical phenomena and the possibility of revising of historical interpretations. In selecting contents, factors considered were potential for arousing interest, easy understanding, providing appropriate level of materials. Based on the criteria, two movies and a novel were selected. The survey on the proposed teaching and learning methods showed that both teachers and students were positive about the usefulness of the proposal. Teachers were positive about the proposal's potential for enhancing historical thinking, building an ability to understand and expose the role of historical perspective that shape historical narration, and enhancing historical consciousness. Students responded that the proposal included fresh information that was different from the description in the textbooks and that they realized historical phenomena can be seen from different angles. It was found that students accepted new interpretations critically and reconstructed historical interpreatations. Furthermore, the level of students' understanding of the materials for the proposed teaching and learning method was higher than that expected by teachers. Therefore, unlike the expectation of teachers that students would have difficulty in understanding diverse interpretations of historical themes currently undergoing in the academia, it was found that students are capable of understanding such contents as far as appropriate class materials are selected. Using the proposed teaching and learning guideline, students will be able to realize that diverse interpretations of historical phenomena exist, begin to nurture their own understanding of history, and get nearer to multidimensional understanding of history by reconstructing historical interpretations. This study focused on a comparison of existing and new interpretations. Therefore, World War I, the physical and epistemological impacts of imperialism, and diversity of imperialist domination were not specifically treated. This study calls for a review of current presentation of history in textbooks and selection of contents. It also urges that textbooks have to be upgraded to enable critical reading of texts.;제국주의는 19세기 말 세계적으로 유행한 과거의 단절적인 역사적 현상이면서 현대 사회에도 영향력을 발휘하는 연속적인 속성을 가지고 있다.
