Abstract
The teacher' skillful questioning behaviors are one of the most valuable techniques for the teacher to stimulate and guide the children's thinking and learning activities. This study is to invertigate the frequency and the types of teacher's question, her reaction to the children's responses, the time between question and answer, and the ratio of children's participation in the question-answer process. The problems of the study are as follows : 1. How often does the teacher give questions to the children in story-telling session? Does the question-frequency differ according to teacher's vocational career, background, and types of question? 2. What types of question does the teacher use in story-telling session? Do .the question types differ according to teacher's vocational career, background, and frequency of question? 3. What types of reaction does the teacher use after the children's reponses? Do the reaction types differ according to teacher's vocational career, background, types of question, and frequency of question? 4. How long does it take between. teacher's question and children's responses? Does it differ accord-ing to teacher's vocational career, educational background, and types of question? 5. What is the ratio of children's participation in this activity? Does the teacher accept or reject? Does it differ according to teacher's vocational career, educational background, and types of question? The subjects of this study were 52 kindergarten teachers in Seoul with different vocational career and background. To investigate the teacher's questioning begaviors, 10 minutes of the story-telling session was recorded and analyzed. The category systems by Cazden(l970), Gallagher & Aschner(l963) and George et. als(1974) were used for data analyses : the frequency of question, the types of question, and the types of reaction. A stop-watch was used to measure the time between question and answer. The resultant findings were analyzed by using the percentage and the mean frequency according to each variable. The results abtained from this study are as follows : 1. The mean frequency of the teacher's question was 44.64 and this frequency was 39.86% of her sentences used in the session. The frequency of teacher's question was differed according to teacher's vocational career and the types of question but little difference was found according to teacher's educational background. 2. The types of teacher's question were differed according to teacher's vocational career and background but little difference was found according to frequency of questions. It was found that teacher used more open questions than the closed and more than 60% of the questions were cognitive-memory type questions. 3. The types of teacher's reaciton were not differed according to type A, i.e., accepting, rejecting. But differences were found according to type B, i.e., (1) simple "Yes" or "NO", (2) extending explanation, (3) asking for clarification, (4) asking for evidence, (5)asking another children. No. differences were found in frequency of the question according to type A and type B. The result also showed that more than 90% of the reactions were acceptance type, type (1) (simple "Yes" or "NO") was about 50%, and type (4) (asking f o r evidence) was the least. 4. The time between teacher's question and children's responses was differed according to teacher's vocational career, background, and the types of question. 5. The ratio of children's particpation was differed according to teacher's vocational career, background, and the types of question. On the average one child answered to the given question.
