E. 맥도웰의 「숲속의 정경(Woodland Sketches) Op. 51」의 악곡분석과 지도방안

Abstract

Edward MacDowell is an educator as well as a composer who learned European romanticism at the end of 19th century and worked in homeland for American music in the reclamation time. His music is consisted of various genre, but most notable part among it is the piano music. Most of his piano music is in form of short character piece or suite, and out of his Romantic tendency to art and literature, he often uses the poetry of Goethe or Schiller. Most of his music has titles, and many of them express the characteristics of America by the usage of Indian melodies as the theme and by depicting the life of Puritans who moved from Europe to America. Because of the harmonic progression, scale of the piece, and the Romantic tendency, his music is compared much to Grieg, and they actually had lot of social intercourses and also dedicated their music to each other. 「Woodland Sketches, Op. 51」, one of the most representative work of MacDowell, reflects his musical trait very well and is in intermediate difficulty, that many people can easily study it. This research made the analysis of each 10 pieces based on the titles and musical style in order to play this work with imagination, and it gives explanations about various techniques in piano playing.;에드워드 맥도웰(Edward Alexander MacDowell 1860～1908)은 19세기말 유럽의 낭만주의 음악을 익히고 개척시기에 놓인 미국음악을 위해 고국에서 활동한 작곡가이자 교육자이다. 그의 음악은 다양한 장르의 곡들로 이루어져 있지만 그 중 가장 두드러지는 부분은 바로 피아노 음악이다. 그의 피아노 음악의 특징은 짧은 성격 소품(Character Pieces)이나 모음곡으로 구성되어 있으며, 낭만주의 색채로써 회화적인 묘사와 더불어 문학과 연관하여 괴테(Johann Wolfgang Goethe 1794～1832)나 쉴러(Johann Christoph Friedrich von Schiller 1759～1805)의 시를 사용하여 작곡하였다. 또 많은 곡들이 제목을 가지고 있어 표제적이며 미국의 원주민인 인디언의 여러 선율을 사용하여 이를 음악의 주제로 삼기도 하였고 유럽에서 미국으로 이주한 청교도들을 표현한 곡도 써 미국적인 특징들을 음악으로 표현하기도 하였다. 화성진행이나 곡의 규모, 낭만적인 경향 등이 그리그(Edvard Grieg 1843～1907)에게 많이 비유되고 있으며 실질적으로 이 둘은 많은 교제가 있어 서로에게 곡을 헌정하기도 하였다. 맥도웰의 작품 중 가장 대표적 피아노곡인 「숲 속의 정경(Woodland Sketches), Op.51」은 이러한 맥도웰의 특징들을 잘 나타내 주고 있으며, 또 중급 난이도로 많은 사람들이 쉽게 접근할 수 있는 곡이다. 본 연구에서는 10개의 모든 곡이 표제를 가지고 있으므로 이를 배경으로 곡을 분석하여 회화적으로 상상하면서 연주하는데 도움이 되도록 하였으며 곡을 연주하기 위하여 필요한 여러 연주기교에 관한 부연 설명을 덧붙여 그 원리들을 이해할 수 있도록 하였다.
