Abstract
Several kinds of satellite (AIRS/AMSU, MODIS) and groud-based measurements have been used to analyze temperature trends in the four atmospheric levels (skin/surface, mid-troposphere, low stratosphere) near the Korean Peninsula (123~132 E, 33~44 N) during the period of September 2002~August 2010. The ground-based data observed from 72 Surface Meteorological Stations (SMS), 457 Automatic Weather Stations (AWS), 6 RAdiosonde OBservations (RAOB) over the land, and 5 buoy stations over the ocean are utilized. The discrepancies in the skin temperature trend between the two satellite observations (AIRS/AMSU, MODIS) have been investigated over the globe during the period of September 2002~August 2011. Satellite-derived temperature trends near Korea show a warming (0.413 K 8yr-1) at surface, and a weak warming (0.029~0.077 K 8yr-1) in the mid-troposphere and low stratosphere, leading to unstable atmospheric layer. The AIRS/AMSU warming over the ocean surface is about 2.5 times greater than that over the land near the Korean Peninsula. The ground-based measurements from both SMS and AWS over the land surface of South Korea also show a warming of 0.346~0.816 K 8yr-1, consistent with the satellite observations. The correlation averages (r=0.77, 0.80) between MODIS skin temperautre and two kinds of ground measurements over land are significant. Warming phenomena (0.096~0.624 K 8yr-1) are observed from all three data sets (SMS, AWS, MODIS), which was co-located at five ground stations. The correlations between AMSU and RAOB are considerably high (0.91~0.95) according to the monthly average anomaly time series. In general, correlation between AMSU and RAOB increases with height. However, the AMSU warming is shown to be greater than RAOB warming at the surface. Above the mid-troposphere and low stratosphere it is the opposite. The observed trends should be noted to be subject to large uncertainty as the corresponding 95% confidence intervals tend to be larger than the observed signals due to large thermal variability and the relatively short periods of the satellite data. The EOF analysis of satellite data indicates that the tropospheric temperature variability near Korea relates primarily with Arctic Oscillation (AO), and secondarily with ENSO (El Niño-Southern Oscillation). However, low stratospheric variability is mainly associated with ENSO and then additionally with Quasi-Biennial Oscillation (QBO). The difference between daytime and nighttime skin temperature trends is globally greater over the land than over the ocean, especially in dry regions. The correlation in the trends between MODIS and AIRS/AMSU is higher over the land than over the ocean. Compared to MODIS, AIRS/AMSU indicates strong warming trend in the high latitude ocean. In the comparison of the MODIS and AIRS/AMSU skin temperatures, the former is much warmer over the region than the latter, especially in boreal winter. The disagreement between the two satellite observations is generally large in the high latitude oceans. This is partially because the observational time difference between MODIS and AIRS/AMSU is great in the high latitudes and due to difference in the ocean surface layer each satellite remotely detects. The AIRS/AMSU, differently from MODIS, takes advantage of microwave channels, sensitive to the ice and snow surfaces and transparent to clouds. Thus, the discrepancy is conspicuous in the high latitude oceans, where sea ice and snow exist. This study can be useful to in improve the model quality by analyzing climate change, and also to understand the errors and characteristics of satellite data, available for the NWP input.
