Abstract
Since the end of World War Ⅱ, Official Development Assistance (ODA) has been aimed at, and contributed to, sustainable development around the world. In spite of its moral and humanitarian objectives, ODA has never been separated from a country's political and economic interests, because no government is willing to, or is able to, assist people of foreign countries at the cost of its own citizens. Since the post World War Ⅱ period throughout the Cold War period and subsequently, the end of the Cold War, ODA has inevitably reflected complicated national interests and changes in political and economic environment of the international society. This thesis is an attempt to understand ODA from this point of view. First, it will provide background information on ODA and theoretical perspectives to interpret ODA in the context of the international political economy. It will also examine the relationship between ODA and national interests, and discuss existing challenges faced by the international ODA regimes. Throughout the thesis, the main focus will be given to the relationship between ODA and international political economy during the post-World War Ⅱ period, providing some historical and statistical analyses.
