This study on lithography whish is one of modern printing arts is made in order to systematize a history of modern printing art. Although lithography is not used in the great part of modern printing art, our modern printing history canaot be systema-tized without examining the significance of lithography in printing art history. Unfortunately, however, the history of our modern printing art has not yet been studied actively in the academic field. More-over, in the case of lithography, we cannot find any specific stud-ies in this field up to date. This study is intended to make a general survey on lithography, Specifically, this study examines how to get the knowledge about lithography, when and how it was introduced into Korea, and how lithographic technique has developed through the period starting in Korea its introduction until Korea's liberation from Japan (1945). The following are the summary and the results of this study on the significance of lithography in the art of modern printing. Lithography invented at the end of the l8th century in the western world was introduced into Korea at the end of the 19th cen-tury, the period of civilization with typography. Some of the books printed by lithography were introduced into Korea by missionaries and excursionists to Japan and confucian-ists and patriots having been to Ghina. The lithographic equipments were introduced here later than typography which was practiced in the year of 1883 at Bakmoonkug(博文局). It seems to have introduced in 1899 when Nongsanggong-bu (農商工部) Printing office was established. It was first used only to print stamps, bills and documents and, for later, to print books. Daegabubchub (大家法帖) was the first book printed by lithography and was published by the Bosungsa (普成社), a private printing office. Lithography has not been used to print books in the beginning because It was more suitable for printing complex materials delicately than producing books ingreat quantity, typography was more suitable for the latter purpose. Lithography was not popularly used before 1910. After 1920,some books started to be printed by it and spread all over the country to make it popularly used to print about 100 different books annually starting around 1935. During 1930's Japan srarted to invade China, lithography was actively used along with the prosperity of printing business in Manchuria, a good Japanese market, In the early 1940's, the development of lithography was obstructed by the break of the Second World War and then Korea was liberated In 1945. As is the case with typography the cultural significance of lithography is thought to be in its contribution to making people read books more popularly by its mass production of books. To subdivide its significance In the light of the situation at that time: 1) it played a pioneering role in outbreaking the peo-ple's way of thinking away from Isolationism. 2) It contributed to spreading modern culture into Koreans by its mass production ability. 3) Providing people with books at a low cost, it contri-buted to the education of children and the Improvements in Koreans' daily life, and 4) it made the transmission of our cultural tradition easier and inspired people with patriotism during the supressive situation of Japanese colonial period.-
