This study, first of all, focused its angle on the fact that the tendency literature in the twenties was started by rejecting 'arts for arts' sake' and instead insisting on 'literature resisting to the given circumstances,' and aimed at examining the relation between the tendency literature and humanism. For that end, the important novels of the novelists who worked actively in the years of 1924-5, which clearly adopted the attitutes of the tendency literature, were selected. The following conclusions were made through the study : The tendency literature took a defiant attitude against destiny and insisted on 'arts of power.' In the 1920's, when the socialism was imported through Japan, the literary circle most keenly reacted to the new ideology and cried out 'come out of secret room of dreams and let's share the literature with common people.' As a result, a new group of literary movement was formed. The members of the new group asserted that the literature looking over the pains of the common people was of no value and the literature should be 'literature supporting the welfare of the proletariate' and 'literature only existing for the lives of numerous people.' Their attitudes were much similar to those of humanism and should be understood in the special social context of the Japanese rule. For them, the Japanese rulers were the bourgeoisie and the Korean people were the proletariate. Thus, their socialism had close relationship with nationalism, and their cause was to defense the suffering Korean people and to resist to the Japanese rule. But in their actual works, they couldn't clarify for what the Korean people resist and how they should live. First, there was no resistance against the Japanese imperialists, their nation's public enemy, in their works. Second, their protagonists lacked persistent and sincere endeavour and they were too easily driven to despair in the desperate reality. Third, the protagonists ironically had no basic attitude of humanism, or belief on human nature and feeling of solidarity with fellow people. They only indulged in selfish agony. fourth, what can be found in their works is, instead of sincere resistance for the constructive life, blind and instinctive struggle driven to destruction and death. The protagonists were not directed by rational thinking but instinctive impulse. Such attitude should be dealt differently with sincere resistance. Fifth, murder, one of the prominent characteristics in their works, is not the way for self-emancipation or restoration of human value but the resulf of impulsive action and insanity without any concrete intention. As enumerated above, tendency literature in the twenties, to the contrary to the original intention, became cruel literature not humanistic one. The authors tried to produce registance literature, but in vain. The reasons why they failed were that they merely reacted to their desperate reality abstractedly and instinctively. They lacked objectiveness toward the tragedy, the indispensable ability required for any good writer. So, their causes for achieving the emancipation and restoration of human value were not crystallized in their works. The result was the literature contrary to humanism.-
