- Abstract
- A spectrophotometric study has been made to investigate the mechanism and nature of the color reaction produced by cholesterol and acids or some halides.
Electron absorption spectra of the complexes produced by mixing the methylene chloride solution of SbCl₃, BF₃ and concentrated sulfuric acid with cholesterol have shown the characteristic absorption peaks at 498mμ and 528mμ in all events.
Equilibrium constants and molor specific absorption coefficients of the complexes were determined by the method of Benesi, Hildebrand. And the results were interpreted and discussed by applying the Orgel and Mullikenes theory.
The dilution effect of the complexes of cholesterol-SbCl₃, the competitive behavior of π-bases and electron donor molecules, such as alcohols, ether and acetone, with cholesterol have been also discussed.
In the light of present knowledge, the concert of donor-acceptor interaction or charge transfer forces would be very useful to explain the phenomena.
