The purpose of this study is to examine whether there are any differences in children's social play and sequential transition patterns of social play according to their social competence. In order to accomplish for this purpose, the following three questions were set up. 1. Are there any differences in children's social play behaviors according to their social competence? 2. Are there any differences in transitions from one state into the other state of children's social play according to their social competence? 3. Are there any differences in three-step play sequences of children's social play according to their social competence? The objects of this study were 60 children of five-year-olds at M and S Kindergarten located in Busan. Children's social competence was measured by teachers in charge of the object classes using Social Competence Scale in caregiver questionnaire made by NICHD Early Child Research Network (1996) and translated by Young, Lee and Myung-Soon, Kim(1999). The rating categories of children's social play were used Robinson et al. (2003). For sequential analysis of children's social play, one child's free play was videotaped for 30 minutes, and the social play state was rated per 10 second. The time of observation was one hour per child. For data analysis, the mean of social play's frequencies were computed and analyzed by independent samples t test. The results of this study are summarized as follows; 1. There are significant differences in children's social behaviors according to their social competence. Solitary play and Onlooker behavior were found more often in the low social competence group. But Cooperative-social interaction did in the high group. Unoccupied behavior and Parallel-aware play did not have any difference. 2. There are significant differences in transitions from one state into the other state of children's social play according to their social competence. Generally, transitions from and into Parallel-aware play were found more often than the other transitions. Solitary play ↔ Onlooker behavior, Solitary play ↔ Parallel-aware play, and Parallel-aware play → Onlooker behavior were showed more often in the low social competence group. But Parallel-aware play ↔ Cooperative-social interaction did in the high group. Solitary play ↔ Cooperative-social interaction, Onlooker behavior → Parallel-aware play, and Onlooker behavior ↔ Cooperative-social interaction did not have any difference. 3. There are significant differences in three-step play sequences of children's social play according to their social competence. Solitary play → Onlooker behavior → Cooperative-social interaction, Parallel-aware play, or Solitary play did not have any difference according to their social competence. Solitary play → Parallel-aware play → Cooperative-social interaction did not have any difference. But Solitary play → Parallel -aware play → Onlooker behavior or Solitary play were found more often in the low social competence group. Onlooker behavior → Parallel-aware play → Cooperative-social interaction was exposed more often in the high social competence group. But Onlooker behavior → Parallel-aware play → Onlooker behavior or Solitary play did in the low group. Parallel-aware play → Onlooker behavior → Cooperative-social interaction or Parallel-aware play did not have any difference. But Parallel-aware play → Onlooker behavior → Solitary play was revealed more often in the low social competence group. Cooperative-social interaction → Parallel-aware play → Cooperative-social interaction was found more often in high social competence group. Cooperative-social interaction → Parallel-aware play → Onlooker behavior or Solitary play did not have any difference.
