스포츠보도와 정치적 신화

Abstract

오늘날 매스 미디어의 발달은 스포츠를 대중문화의 가장 중요한 요소로 만들었으며 매스 미디어에 의해 중재되는 스포츠( mediated sports )는 정치·경제·사회·문화 등 제반현상에 강력한 영향력을 미치고 있다. 그 중에서도 현대의 스포츠와 매스 미디어는 정치현실과 가장 밀접한 관계를 유지하면서 서로 상호작용하고 있는데 이제 스포츠를 정치와 분리시켜서 이해한다는 것은 무의미한 일이라고 하겠다. 본 논문은 이와 같은 스포츠와 정치 및 매스 미디어의 관계를 거시적인 관점에서 규명해 보고자 한 것으로서 특히 우리나라에서 매스 미디어가 스포츠보도를 통해서 어떠한 정치적 기능을 하고 있는지를 최근 서울에서 개최된 '86아시안게임의 보도내용을 중심으로 밝히고자 한다. 이를 위해서 본 연구에서는 매스 미디어와 스포츠에 대한 '신화'적 접근을 통하여 매스 미디어에 의해 전달되는 스포츠의 성격을 밝히고 특히 스포츠에 내재하고 있는 정치적 성향이 정치적 정통성을 유지시키는 정치적 신화를 형성하고 있다는 이론적 틀을 제시하고자 한다. 한편 이와같은 이론을 바탕으로 한국신문의 스포츠보도에서 나타나는 정치적 신화의 내용을 알아보기 위해서 '86아시안게임보도에 대한 내용분석을 실시하였다. 내용분석은 조선일보와 중앙일보를 대상으로 '86아시안게임에 관한 기사내용을 '문장'을 단위로 분석하였으며 기간은 대회개최 전인 9월 10일에서 9월 19일까지와 대회기간인 9월 20일부터 10월5일까지, 그리고 대회가 끝난 후인 10월 6일에서 10월 15일까지의 3단계로 나누었고 이를 다시 이틀간격으로 체계적 표집하였다. 문헌연구를 바탕으로 설정된 분석유목은 사전분석 결과 다소 수정되었으며 각 유목에 해당하는 문장의 가치를 빈도처리 하였다. 내용분석결과 나타난 한국신문의 '86아시안게임보도 내용 및 방식상의 특징과 '86아시안게임보도를 통해서 형성된 정치적 신화의 내용은 다음과 같다. 1. 보도내용상의 특징 첫째, 한국신문의 '86아시안게임보도내용은 국가주의, 이데올로기의 갈등, 국민통합, 국제주의, 정치적리더쉽 등 스포츠의 정치적 성격을 강하게 나타내고 있다. 둘째, 한국신문의 '86아시안게임보도내용은 안보 및 정통성의 과제를 안고 있는 한국적 정치현실을 반영해 주고 있다. 셋째, 한국신문의 '86아시안게임보도내용에는 국제주의적인 요소가 강조되고 있어서 '국제평화에의 기여'라는 매스 미디어의 고전적인 기능을 중요시하고 있음을 알 수 있다. 넷째, 한국신문의 '86아시안게임보도내용은 갈등적이고 불안정한 요소보다는 조화와 화합의 요소가 강조되고 있어서 현상유지적인 성격이 강하다. 다섯째, 한국신문의 '86 아시안게임보도내용에는 스포츠를 통한 정치적 역효과를 경계하는 등 스포츠를 정치현실과 연결하여 분석하는 의견물이 제시되고 있다. 여섯째, 사회적으로는 영웅주의, 보상주의, 페어플레이정신 등이 강조되고 있다. 2. 보도방식상의 특징 첫째, 신문에 따라서 정치적 성향에 차이가 있다. 둘째, 한국신문이 스포츠와 관련하여 의견물기사를 통해 강조하는 가치는 국가주의, 국제주의, 정치의식 등 정치성이 강한 내용들이다. 셋째, '86아시안게임보도내용은 신문의 편집배열상 강조도가 매우 높은 위치에 나타나고 있다. 넷째, 대회시작 전에 신문에서 강조된 가치는 안보·국제주의이며 대회기간과 대회가 끝난 후에는 국가주의, 국제주의, 국민통합, 사회, 스포츠일반 등에 대한 내용이 비슷하게 강조되고 있다. 3. '86아시안게임보도를 통해 형성된 '정치적 신화'의 내용 첫째, 아시안게임의 서울개최와 게임에서의 승리는 민족적 역량의 과시이며 우리나라의 국력신장을 의미한다(국가주의적 신화). 둘째, 아시안게임을 통해서 아시아인은 하나가 되었으며 이데올로기 대립이 완화되었다(국제주의적 신화). 셋째, 아시안게임을 통해서 국민은 일치단결하였으며 화합이 이룩되었다(국민통합의 신화). 넷째, 우리나라는 남북대결이라는 긴장상태에 있기 때문에 무엇보다도 국가안보를 위해서 사회적 혼란은 방지되어야만 한다(안보의 신화) 결론적으로 스포츠세계의 정치적 요소들은 매스 미디어를 통해 중재됨으로써 '정치적 신화'를 형성하게 되며 이것은 현존질서의 안정과 정당성유지에 기여하게 되는 가치와 신념을 포함하고 있다고 하겠다. 그리고 이러한 중재된 스포츠의 정치적 성격은 수용자들에게 획일적인 사고(思考)를 강요하고 기존의 지배질서를 무비판적으로 받아들이게 하는 정치적 '조작'의 도구가 될 수 있다는 점에서 프랑크푸르트학파의 「문화산업론」과 「조작이론」에 근거한 비판적 평가가 요구된다고 하겠다.;At the modern times the development of the mass media can lead the sports to becoming the most important part of the mass culture. And the influence of this "mediated sports" in the modern society seems to be very powerful. It is thought that the modern sports and the mass media are closely connected with the politics. On the other hand, sports appears to reflect the 'myth' of the society, which is regarded as controlling the consciousness of the people. And especially the 'political myth' which affects on the public opinion is produced by the mass media. This study tried to explore the relationship among sports, mass media and politics in a macroscopic view with mythical approach. The theoretical framework of this study is that sports reporting is offering a political myth and the function of this political myth is to maintain the political legitimacy. And the political myth which is shaped by the Korean New- spapers was examined through the content analysis of the '86 Asian Games reportings. As a result, 4 kinds of the political myths were found. The content of these political myths can be summerized as follows : 1. The hosting of the '86 Asian Games and the triumph of the Korean team in the games were the displays of the strength of national power - the myth of the Nationalism. 2. Through the '86 Asian Games Asian people can be united and the ideological conflicts can be relaxed. - the myth of the Internationalism. 3. Through the '86 Asian Games Korean people were united into 'a single mind' and the national integration was strongly accomplished. -- the myth of the National Integration. 4 . Because of the military tension in the Korean peninsula, the cause of the social instability must be eliminated and the social order must be maintained for the purpose of the national security. -- the myth of the Security. In conclusion the Korean newspapers are reflecting the political dispositions of the international sports and shaping the 'political myth' which is serving for the maintenance of the political legitimacy. Finally, according to the "theory of Cultural Industry" and the "manipulation theory" of the Frankfurt School this political dispositions of the mediated sports can be criticized because it impel the people to an one - dimensional thinking and can be used as a tool of the political manipulation.
