Abstract

설화는 오랜 인류의 문화적 소산으로 인간의 원초적인 의식을 반영하는 예술 작품이다. 식물을 소재로 한 설화들은 전승이 풍부하지 않지만 소재 자체가 가진 의미는 인간의 삶과 밀접한 관련을 가지고 있다는 점에서 본격적인 논의가 필요하리라 생각된다. 이런점에서 본고는 식물소재 설화의 분류 작업과 함께 구성과 의미를 살펴봄으로서 식물소재 설화의 성격 규명과 나아가서는 원초적인 인간의 사유 방식을 추출해 보고자 한다. 2장에서는 식물 소재의 설화가 어떤 것인가를 살피기 위하여 기간된 자료집을 통해 취택한 식물 소재의 설화들을 일단 소재별로 나무, 꽃, 열매, 약초별로 크게 나눈 뒤, 이들을 내용에 따라 신이, 유래라는 주제로 다시 분류하여 자료의 유형화 작업을 꾀해 보았다. 그 결과 나무관련 소재의 설화가 신이 항목에 많은 비중을 지니고 있다면 꽃과 관련된 설화는 유래에 편중성을 띠고 있었고 약초나 열매또한 그 기능과 관련하여 신이에 편중되는 경향을 보인다. 3장에서는 2장에서 제시한 분류체계를 근간으로 이들 각 자료들의 구성상의 특징을 살펴 보았다. 나무류의 설화는 민간 신앙과 관련하여 비교적 단순한 서술만으로도 나무의 신이성이 부각되고 있었고, 꽃 유래담의 경우는 결여 - 비극적 장치 - 예고된 사건 - 뜻하지 않은 불행 - 죽음- 재생의 비극적 구조를 가진다. 열매와 약초류의 설화는 대부분 탐색담의 구조를 갖는다. 4장에서는 논의의 대상으로 삼은 설화들속에 나타나는 식물들의 의미를 정리해 가면서 이들을 인류 보편적인 상징들과 대비하면서 그 특성들을 정리하였다. 그 중 나무는 원초적인 식물 숭배의 대표적인 것으로 인정되며 꽃은 현실의 억압등을 비판하는 민중의 의식이 반영된 여성상징으로, 열매는 식물의 핵으로 효자에게 주어지는 신의 선물로 또, 고귀한 인물의 탄생의 원인이 되는 부성 상징으로 나타난다. 약초중 산삼은 인간 사유구조의 주술적 원리에 의해 변신하는 식물로 나타난다. 식물소재의 설화는 어느 경우라도 '신이항'에 설화가 편중되어 있다. 이것은 식물이 지니는 생명의 순환성과 무관치 않을 것이다. 민속학적인 측면에서도 당산나무와 같은 나무는 민간 신앙과 연류된 소재로서 많은 관심의 대상이 되어 왔다. 인삼의 경우도 이와 마찬가지인데 설화뿐 아니라 민간 신앙의 대상이나 민간 요법의 기능으로써 역할을 해 왔기 때문일 것이다. 오늘날 동물 설화가 실제적인 삶의 접경에서 멀리 떨어진 위치를 차지한다먼 식물 설화는 아직까지도 현존하는 대상의 내력을 알리거나 그것을 인식시키는 역할을 한다고 할 수 있다. 이는 식물이라는 대상이 인간의 생존과 맺고있는 관계성 때문이라고 할 수 있는데 오랜 태고적 인류의 조상에게 자리했던 식물의 역할이 오늘날까지도 지속되고 있기 때문이다.;In this study, I'd like to investigate tales through approach of materials to deal with the matter of interpretation which the studies until now have neglected. They were concentrated on organizing and classifying narratives. Plant tales are not so many, but they are proper for abstracting the primitive(original way of thinking of mankind and they neglected plant(study) tales I limit them to plants. In chapter Ⅱ, the materials which were collected(to show what are the tales that were related to plants) were classified into threes, flowers, berries and herbs then I classified them into novelty, origin. In chapter Ⅲ, I evinced structured characteristics of trees, flowers, berries and herbs presenting specific materials of chapter Ⅱ. Tales related to trees have something to do with novelty while flowers related tales have connection with origin and herbs and berries do novelty. In chapter Ⅳ, I examined private symbol or meaning of the plants, comparing the with universal meaning on the basis of structure characteristics in chapter Ⅲ. The fact that trees were expressed as god like existence or path of God's universal in the aspect of novelty but it also requires special examination in that they have peculiarities due to the difference of culture this characteristics also apply to flowers and berries, too. In the above trees, flowers berries and herbs are described as novel existence or object, which solve some problems and deficiency of reality men can not overcome. These characteristics are verealed through comparing tree related tales with flower related tales or berries and herbs related tales.
