성격특성에 따른 수학불안 : 인문계 여고생을 중심으로

Abstract

본 연구는 학생들의 수학불안 요인검사와 MMPI 인성검사 결과를 분석하여 수학불안과 관련이 있는 성격특성을 알아내고 수학불안의 본질을 이해함으로써 수학불안을 일으킬 가능성이 높은 학생들을 사전에 파악하여 수학불안의 야기를 예방하고자 하는데 그 목적이 있다. 이를 위한 연구문제들은 다음과 같다. 1. 수학불안이 높은 집단과 낮은 집단은 수학불안 요인에서 어떤 차이를 나타내는가? 2. 수학불안이 높은 집단과 낮은 집단이 MMPI 척도 상에서는 어떤 차이를 나타내는가? 3. 수학불안 요인과 MMPI 임상척도 사이에는 어떤 관계가 있는가? 위의 문제들을 연구하기 위하여 서울시 강남구에 위치한 인문계 여자고등학교 학생 124명을 대상으로 수학불안 요인검사와 MMPI를 실시하였다. 수학불안 요인검사 결과에 따라 수학불안이 높은 집단과 낮은 집단을 구분한 후 두 집단의 수학불안 요인별 차이와 MMPI 척도별 차이를 구하여 t검증을 실시하였다. 성격특성에 따른 수학불안을 살펴보기 위해서는 MMPI 임상척도와 수학불안 요인간의 상관관계를 구하였다. 그런 다음 5개의 수학불안 요인에 대하여 MMPI 10개 임상척도를 각각 다중회귀분석하여 각 성격특성의 가중치를 밝혔다. 그 결과는 다음과 같다. 1. 수학불안이 높은 집단과 낮은 집단은 인지 및 부정적 생각 요인과 수학 교과 요인에서 수학불안의 차이가 가장 크게 나타났다. 2. 수학불안이 높은 집단은 Pa(편집증), Pt(강박증) 척도의 T점수가 유의미하게 높게 나타났고, 수학불안이 낮은 집단은 Mf(남성특성-여성특성) 척도의 T점수가 유의미하게 높게 나타났다(p<.05). 3. MMPI 임상척도 중에서 수학불안 요인과 유의미한 상관관계가 있는 것은 Mf(남성특성-여성특성), Pt(강박증), Pa(편집증) 척도로 나타났다(p<.05). 위의 결과에 따라 성격특성으로 인하여 수학불안의 가능성을 가진 학생들에게 수학불안을 예방하기 위하여 다음과 같이 제언하였다. 첫째, 수학불안이 생길 것으로 예상되는 시기에 수학불안의 예방에 초점을 두고 개인의 성격을 파악하기 위하여 성격검사를 실시한다. 계산활동 등 수학과목에 흥미가 적고 특성불안의 성격을 가진 학생들에게서 수학불안이 발생할 가능성이 높음을 유의하며 학생들을 주의 깊게 관찰한다. 둘째, 수학교사는 불안하고 예민한 성격을 가진 학생들이 편안하게 접근할 수 있는 분위기를 먼저 형성한다. 그런 다음 모방학습이나 쉬운 문제, 재미있는 문제 풀이부터 시작해서 잘 할 때마다 칭찬을 해 주고 모의시험을 통하여 자신감을 길러준다. 이를 통하여 수학에 대한 흥미와 자신감을 갖게 하고 부정적인 생각을 제거함으로써 수학불안을 예방한다. 셋째, 부모, 교사, 또는 학생이 성적에 대하여 너무 높은 기대를 함으로써 불안을 높이지 않도록 주의하고 학생이 충분히 자신감을 가질 때까지 문제해결력 등의 고차원적인 수학적 능력을 요구하지 않도록 유의한다. 넷째, 우리 나라의 중·고등학교 수학교과 과정은 격차가 너무 커서 학생의 실패와 좌절을 유발하게 되므로 이에 대한 교육목표와 교육과정상의 조정이 요청되며 개선되기 전까지 학생들이 수학에 대한 흥미와 자신감을 잃지 않도록 배려하는 교사의 역할이 필요하다. 본 연구의 의의는 수학을 잘 할 수 있는 학생이 성격특성에 의해 수학불안이 자체적으로 야기되고 심화될 가능성이 있음을 밝히는 데 있다. 기존의 수학불안 처치 프로그램이 별로 효과가 없었던 이유도 이러한 성격특성으로 인하여 수학불안이 고취되고 수학회피와 연결되기 때문인 것으로 생각된다. 따라서 본 연구에서 수학불안을 다소나마 예방하기 위하여 제안한 방법이 현실적으로 수학불안을 예방할 수 있을지 다소 의심스럽다. 그러나 수학능력을 향상시키는 프로그램과 함께 불안을 고취시키는 성격특성상의 문제점도 함께 고려한다면 수학불안이 어느 정도 완화될 것으로 생각한다. ; Mathematics becomes greater part of information society day by day. Even though we make efforts to improve math education in many ways, some students intelligent enough to study math well avoid math or have under achievement. This results in their choice of inappropriate departments at university and eventual limited jobs related to math. We use the concept of math anxiety to explain this math avoidance and under achievement. Math anxiety has not been a facilitating role in achievement but an element of interference, and so I try to set up a way to keep students from lacking basic skills because of math anxiety by analyzing the basic factor of students with high math anxiety. I studied these problems for what I stated before. 1. What is related to math anxiety among MMPI scales? 2. What differences do the students who have high math anxiety and low math anxiety make in MMPI scale ? 3. What differences do the students who have high math anxiety and low math anxiety make in their personality? For this purpose, I made female high school students take the MMPI test analyzed the result of the test and gained the following result. 1. It is proved that math anxiety is significantly related to Mf(male personal trait-female personal trait), Pt(stress), and Pa(paranoia) scale in MMPI test. 2. It is proved that the high math anxiety group has shown T score of Pa, Pt scale significantly highly, the low math anxiety group has shown T score of Mf scale significantly highly. 3. The results of test say that the personal trait of high anxious students about math is always uncomfortable, much worried, and in high tension, otherwise that, of low anxious students is self-defensive, mostly confident, stable in emotion, so they are interested in mechanic scientific field and calculating works. According to the result of the survey, I make the following suggestion to minimize the lack of basic skill, add confidence, and decrease math avoidance by preventing math anxiety of students. We need to make students apt to cause math anxiety take MMPI test to prevent math anxiety. We should give students chances to solve as easy problems as possible. It will bring students confidence to prevent math anxiety.
