윤치호의 개화론 연구

Abstract

19세기 후반 朝鮮 社會는 그 이전의 어느 시기보다도 큰 변혁이 요구되어지던 激變期·變革期였다. 이 시기의 조선은 대외적으로 일본과의 강화도 조약을 시작으로 하여 서구 여러 나라와 수교를 맺으면서 국제질서 속에 본격적으로 편입되었다. 대내적으로는 지배층의 착취에 의한 민생고 속에서 농민의 반란이 일어나고, 정치·사회적 불안과 혼란이 극심해지고 있었다. 대내외적으로 어려움에 직면한 조선 사회는 이를 극복하기 위한 개혁노력이 절실히 필요하였고, 지식인의 역할이 어느 때보다도 강조되었다. 개혁을 위한 노력은 개혁의 목표와 실현방법을 놓고 여러 가지 양상으로 나타나게 된다. 본고에서는 그러한 격동기에 정치가·교육가·민중지도자·친일협력자·기독교지도자 등의 다양한 평가를 받고 있는 윤치호(1865～1945)의 개화사상의 형성과정, 개화사상의 본질, 실천방법 등을 살펴봄으로써 당시 개화지식인의 한 潮流를 파악하고자 한다. 윤치호는 한국근대사의 변혁기 속에서 당시 최고의 근대적 지식인으로서 정치·사회적 격변상황에 깊이 관여하였다. 그러한 그는 방대한 양의 일기(1883～1943)를 남겼다. 이는 다소 사료적 비판의 여지가 있지만, 한국의 근대사·현대사에 있어서 매우 중요한 자료라고 볼 수 있다. 이에 본 연구에서는 『尹致昊日記』를 기본적 자료로 이용하였고, 서한집, 독립신문 등을 보완자료로 활용하였다. 본 연구의 전개과정은 다음과 같다. 먼저 연구의 범주는 윤치호의 가치관이 크게 변하는 을사보호조약 以前으로 한정하여 살펴보았다. 을사보호조약 이후에 그의 사상과 활동은 커다란 전환을 맞이하여 이른바 지성인의 은둔적인 삶, 경우에 따라서는 친일적인 삶으로 평가될 수 있는 행적을 보이게 된다. 따라서 그 부분은 본 연구에서 다루지 않았다. 별도의 연구가 요망된다. Ⅱ장에서는 윤치호의 개화사상의 형성과정을 일본 유학시기, 중국·미국유학시기로 나누어서 살펴보았다. 일본 유학시기는 개화문명을 처음으로 체험하고 개화사상을 수용하였으며, 명치유신을 개화의 모델로 삼게 되는 중요한 계기가 된다. 중국·미국 유학시절은 각각 그의 개화사상의 바탕이 되는 기독교의 수용, 민주사회의 체험이라는 면에서 중요성을 띠고 있다. Ⅲ장에서는 개화사상의 본질을 인권론, 독립론, 교육론, 종교론에 중점을 두어 살펴보고, 또한 급진개화파의 김옥균『온건개화파의 김윤식과의 비교를 통해서 윤치호의 개화』개혁에 대한 인식을 보다 자세히 살펴보고자 한다. Ⅳ장에서는 윤치호가 개화·개혁을 실시하기 위해서 제시하였던 실천방안을 평화적 자주개혁론, 시민혁명론으로 나누어 살펴보고, 차선책으로 제시하였던 선진국 지배하의 개혁안을 거문도사건 시기, 청일전쟁 시기, 아관파천 시기로 나누어 살펴보고자 한다. ; Chosun society in the later period of the 19th C. underwent much more of upheavals and renovations than any other age where people demanded significant reform. Chosun, at this time, in the respect of foreign policy, began to enter into the international order in full-scale by signing treaties of amity with several nations after kwangwha-do peace treaty with Japan. Domestically, farmers rising against the exploitation of the upper class occurred to ease their economic distress, and political and social insecurity and confusion became extreme. Chosun society confronting difficulties both at home and abroad acutely needed innovative efforts to overcome them, so the role of the intellectuals was important. And efforts for reform, in the course, took various shapes according to the target or practical methods of reform. This study is to examine the formation and substance of the ideas of Yoon Chi-ho (1865-1945), who has been called as a politician, educator, leader of the people and pro-Japanese activist or Christian instructor, for civilization, and practical methods in them to grasp one steam of intellectual social movements at that time of agitation. Yoon Cho-ho as one of the most intellectual scholars deeply engaged in the politicaland social issues of that time of great upheavals. He left considerable volumes of diary(1883-1943). Although they have rooms for criticism, they can be said as very important data in modern and contemporary history. Therfore, for this study, "The Diary of Yoon Chi-ho" has been basically referred to and collections of his letters and The Independence Daily news articles, etc. have been used as supplementary data. The process of development of study is as follows: the range of this study is limited to the period before the compulsory protection treaty by Japan which changed Yoon Chi-ho s view a great deal. After that compulsory treaty, his thoughts and activities went though big transition or to show traces of fugitive stepback as of an intellectual or pro-Japanese tendency as some might say. Therefore, those parts of his life haven t been dealt with in this study, which the author of this study thinks need further study. In chapter Ⅱ, Yoon Chi-ho s lifetime is divided into those of studying in Japan, China and U.S.A to see the formations of his civilization thoughts. When he was studying in Japan, there he experienced a civilized society and accepted the idea of civiliaztion for the first time, which yielded an important momentum for him to set the Meiji Restoration as his model for civilzation. On the other hand, his subsequent studyings in China and America have an important meaning in the respect of his accepting Christianity and experiencing democtratic society. In chapter Ⅲ, the substance of civilization thoughts is discussed mainly around theories of human rights, national independence, education and religion, and Yoon Chi-ho s recognition of civilization and reformation is looked at in detail through comparison between Kim Ok-kyun on the radical toward civilization and Kim Yoon-sik on the moderate side. In chapter Ⅳ, the practical methods Yoon Chi-ho presented to carry out civilization and reformation is investigated mainly around the peaceful independence reform theory and civil revolution theory, and then the alternative plans under the reign of one advanced nation is discussed in relation to Komun-do event, Sino-Japanese War and Akwanpachun event.
