Abstract
Since modern education was introduced in Korea, the school curriculum has long been focused on the delivery of knowledge using the method of direct instruction. However, in the 21st century postmodern society where the diverse culture and values coexist, and where the pattern and the spectrum of knowledge are complex, the method of direct instruction that unilaterally delivers knowledge has its limitations in that students are not able to practice extensive thinking. Alternative to the direct instruction, a method of teaching using interactive communication, facilitates exchanges and interpretations of knowledge through the interaction between the students and the instructor, and also among students thus making the students obtain a broader understanding of text content. Such an approach will be appropriate in the stream of modern society where infinite information and knowledge are created and vanish. The purpose of this study is to explore the meanings, the necessity, and the educational philosophic meanings of the narrative approach that helps a student, who is the main agent of education, to think extensively through communication and interaction with others in the stream of the times of pluralism. Particularly, the author explored the narrative approach in the teaching-and-learning process in the perspective that pursuit of knowledge that is flexible and based on perspectivism as oppose to standardized knowledge, is needed in modern knowledge-base society where social communication and building trust is important due to globalization and post-ideology. Also, the purpose of this study is to explore the philosophic meanings of the narrative approach for forming the student's self-regulating and independent humanity and for fostering the attitude of respect of others and their diversity. The narrative approach is focused on the methods of expression and reproduction through narratives and story-telling, the cognitive, definitional, and behavioral dimensions of the individual's experiences, as an alternative of preexisted teaching-and-learning methods that was focused on the perspective of cognitive development (Tappan, Mark B, 1991: 243-256). The learner might be able to claim his/her independent life without being influenced easily by the conditions of outside world by obtaining knowledge of problem-solving and self-examining through sharing experiences by communication and through extensive thinking. The author studied the existentialism, the postmodernism, and the Hermeneutics as philosophic basis with the assumption that the narrative approach is an appropriate method of teaching-and-learning. The mechanized and industrialized modern society is a complex of diverse values and issues. In such a complex modern society where isolation of humanity and materialism are prevalent, recovering one's own existential values is important more than ever. The communication and the emotional exchanges through the interaction between the instructor and the students, or between the self and others will contribute to the recovery of one's own independent standard and values in diverse standards and values, and to the leaning of human love of caring others. Postmodernism has the perspective that refuses the objective world view and finds meanings in narratives created by people's diverse interpretations. This perspective is the theoretical base of the narrative approach that appreciates individual student's stories in its orientation of specificity based on small stories as oppose to the universality of big arguments. Nietzsche's Hermeneutics and perspectivism lays stress on evaluation of values by perspectivism under the premise that a fact can be interpreted in many different perspectives. These philosophic bases suggest that students can create their own life stories and form identity by broad understanding of text content and accepting diverse perspectives. For the narrative approach to be applied in education, it should be accompaniedwith the improvement of a school assessment system that judges students' achievement by their grades and college admission.
