These studies were undertaken to determine the basal metabolism, energy expenditure and daily energy expenditure of school boys and girls in Korea. The subjects for basal metabolism were selected at random from healthy school boys (101) and girls (106), ranging in age from 12 to 22 years. Measurements of the basal metabolism were made by indirect calorimetry, using a Douglas bag and Scholander's gas analyzer. Factors of cold and menstruation which influence basal metabolism were studies. Also the energy metabolism during sleeping was examined. Basal metabolism rates of 207 individuals are given in Table 1. and 2. The value of basal metabolic rates of Korean students are in close agreement with the standard values of Boothby, Fleisch, Robertson and Reid. The average increase in basal metabolic rate in winter (environment -10℃) was 9.7% (approximately 9.5% in male and 9.9% in females) During menstruation (7 college girls) it was increased 6.6%. The energy metabolism during sleeping showed a decrease of 5.6%. The energy expenditures of various activities of home life and school life were also measured by the Douglas-Scholander's method. The results of thirty different types of activities are shown at Table 10-1 to 10-3. There was little difference in metabolic values for boys and girls engaged in the same activity. The resting metabolism averaged 25% higher than the basal metabolism. The assessment of the daily energy expenditure for each subject was made by the factorial method, using a record of his or her activities throughout the 24 hours of every survey day. Certain activities were recorded by minute units. The total daily energy expenditure calculated is the sum of all energy expenditures which are calculated by multiplying the caloric value of the metabolic rate with the length of time spent on each activity. The results of the total daily energy expenditure records of 160 boys and girls as summarized as follow,-
