Levinas의 ‘타자철학’에 나타난 관계맺음의 교육적 의미

Abstract

A human being’s life is generally formed in interpersonal relationships. Therefore, it is within bound to say that the experiences in those relationships are critical factors of a human being’s learning and growing. Some of those experiences have favorable effect on individual learning and growing while others have negative effect on them; that is, many people often suffered from the trauma originated by negative relational experiences. Moreover, the trauma seriously impedes the desirable personality development of individuals in many cases. Therefore, inquiring into the interpersonal relationship which fosters desirable personality development is one of the most tasks that educational research should deal with. In this sense, Emmanuel Levinas’ “Philosophy of the Other” provides notable idea about interpersonal relationship. According to Levinas, entering into a relation with Other means that facing the person who is absolutely different from me. He defines interpersonal relationship like this; because he wants to emphasize the fact that the Other never be understood or interpreted by me. Facing the absolute Other can be viewed in two aspects: the one is making relationship with oneself and the other is making relationship with the Other. Making relationship with oneself means that an individual aware oneself as the person who has peculiarity and dignity. According to Levinas, an individual can go forward to the next aspect, making relationship with the Other based on this relationship; however, he also emphasizes that this is only a necessary condition. Intrinsically, the Other always exists beyond my recognition and thought; therefore, the Other is occurred only when the Other shows the perfect difference to me by oneself. Levinas conceptualize that the Other exposes the otherness through epiphany of the one’s “Face” that is, through the own “Face” the Other open the relationship with me showing the peculiarity and dignity of oneself. Therefore, making relationship with other is facing on the Other’s face; and through this event, the new point of view on world can be opened to a self-centered individual. Based on this theoretical inquiry, this study analyzes a case of parricide so called “Lee Eun-suk’s case” which is representative model of failed relationship in Levinas’ point of view to search for actual application of the discussed theory. The result of this analysis shows important things related to the Levinas’ philosophical thought about entering into a relationship; firstly, making relationship with oneself is very critical for me to realize other as the absolute Other, secondly, respecting the Other’s perfect otherness is the key to making relationship with the Other, and finally, failing relationship in Levinas’ point of view seriously impedes an individual’s desirable personality development. Therefore, to realize the interpersonal relationship asserted by Levinas specific educational efforts should be discussed in two aspects. Above all, it is necessary to make the educational environment which fosters the making relationship with oneself. In addition to this, it is important to promote individuals to respect the Other’s otherness.;인간의 삶은 상당한 경우에 있어서 그가 다른 사람들과 맺고 있는 관계들 속에서 이루어진다. 이와 같은 사실에 비추어 볼 때, 인간은 그가 속해 있는 관계 안에서의 경험을 바탕으로 배우고 성장한다고 볼 수 있다. 그러나 모든 인간관계에서의 경험이 인간의 배움과 성장에 긍정적인 영향을 주는 것은 아니다. 때때로 많은 사람들은 관계 안에서의 부정적 경험으로 인해 받은 상처와 고통에 시달리기도 한다. 뿐만 아니라, 이러한 고통과 상처들은 많은 경우에 개인이 바람직한 인성을 형성하는 데 있어서 심각한 문제를 발생시키기도 한다. 이렇듯 인간관계와 개인의 인성발달 간에 긴밀한 관련성이 있다는 사실을 통해 볼 때, 인간 사이의 바람직한 관계맺음에 대한 탐구는 바람직한 인성 함양을 도모할 수 있는 교육에 관한 논의와 관련하여 필수적으로 다루어져야할 과제라고 할 수 있다. 이에 본 연구는 바람직한 인성의 형성을 도모하기 위한 교육과 관련해 인간 사이의 관계맺음의 본질에 대한 긴요한 철학적 사유를 펼치고 있는 레비나스(Emmanuel Levinas)의 ‘타자철학’에 근거하여 관계맺음의 의미에 대하여 고찰하였다. 그에 의하면, ‘타인’이라는 존재와 관계를 맺는 일은 곧, ‘나’라는 존재와 절대적으로 다른 존재를 만나는 일이다. 그가 타인과의 관계맺음을 이렇게 정의하는 이유는 ‘타인’이라는 존재가 ‘나’라는 사람의 인식체계로 판단하거나 해석할 수 없는 고유한 존재임을 강조하고자 하기 때문이다. 이처럼 레비나스가 의미하는 바, ‘나’와 절대적으로 다른 존재와 만나는 일은 크게 두 가지의 사건에 의해 이루어질 수 있다. 절대적으로 다른 타인과 관계하기 위해서 개인은 우선 자기 자신과 관계맺음에 이르러야 한다. 이때 자기 자신과의 관계를 맺는다는 말은 개인이 자신을 이 세상 어떤 무엇으로도 혹은 누구로도 대체할 수 없는 고유성과 존엄성을 지닌 존재로 자각하는 일을 의미한다. 레비나스에 따르면, 개인은 이 같이 고유하고 존엄한 자기를 자각할 때에 비로소 관계맺음의 다음 국면인 타인과의 관계맺음으로 나아갈 수 있게 된다. 그러나 또한 그에 의하면, 자기 자신과의 관계맺음은 타인과의 관계맺음을 위한 필요조건일 뿐 충분조건은 아니다. 타인은 그 본질상 언제나 나의 인식과 사유 너머에 존재하기 때문에 그를 만나는 일은 언제나 그 스스로 자신의 절대적 다름을 내 앞에 드러내 보일 때에 가능하게 된다. 레비나스에 의하면, 이와 같은 일은 타인이 자신의 절대적 다름을 보여주는 자신의 ‘얼굴’을 내 앞에 현현하는 순간에 이루어진다. 곧, 타인은 그의 ‘얼굴’을 통해 나에게 자신의 고유성을 드러내 보이며 나와의 소통 관계를 터 온다. 이처럼 ‘얼굴’로 자신의 다름을 드러내는 타인을 존중하고 받아들이는 일이 바로 레비나스가 의미하는 바 진정한 타인과의 관계맺음이며, 이 관계를 통해 ‘나’에게는 자기중심적인 관점에서 벗어나 전혀 새로운 시각으로 세상을 바라볼 수 있는 가능성이 열리게 된다. 이와 같은 레비나스 이론에 대한 고찰을 바탕으로 본 연구는 이 이론과 교육의 관련성을 탐색하기 위해 관계맺음의 대표적 실패 사례라고 볼 수 있는 부모토막살해사건, 일명 ‘이은석 사건’을 분석하였다. 그 결과, 이 사례에 드러난 관계맺음 실패는 레비나스의 이론에서 의미하는 바와 같은 관계맺음을 이루기 위한 조건들을 충족하지 못하였기 때문에 발생되어진 문제였다는 사실을 알 수 있었다. 언급한 바와 같이, 레비나스의 이론에서 타인과의 관계맺음은 자기 자신과의 관계맺음을 필요조건으로 하여 이루어질 수 있다. 다시 말해서, 자기 자신을 어떤 것으로 대체할 수 없는 고유한 존재로 자각하는 일이 타인과의 관계맺음에 선행된다. 그러나 이 분석의 중심이 되는 인물인 이은석의 경우, 레비나스가 말한 바, 자기 자신과의 관계맺음을 이루는 데에 필수적인 요건이 되는 ‘삶에 대한 향유 욕구’를 내·외적 요인에 의해 억압당함으로 말미암아 자기 자신과의 관계맺음에서 실패하였다는 사실이 드러났다. 또한 분석된 바에 의하면, 타인들과의 반복된 부정적 경험 역시 이은석과 타인들 사이의 관계맺음 실패를 야기하는 요인이 되었다. 곧, 이 사례에서 이은석의 주변 인물들은 그들에 대해 타인인 이은석이 자신들과 절대적으로 다른 존재로서 독특성과 고유성을 가진 다는 점을 존중하고 받아들이는 태도를 갖추지 못함으로써 이은석과의 관계맺음에 실패하였다. 뿐만 아니라, 이러한 사실은 이은석 역시 그들을 레비나스가 말한 바와 같은 타인으로 받아들이지 못하게 함으로써 악순환적인 타인과의 관계맺음 실패를 유발하는 데 영향을 미쳤다. 이처럼 본 연구는 레비나스의 이론에 의하여 ‘이은석 사건’을 분석한 결과를 바탕으로 하여 개인의 바람직한 인성 함양을 도모하는 데 있어 ‘타자철학’에 나타난 관계맺음이 교육장면 안에서 실현되기 위해서는 어떠한 교육적 노력이 추구되어야 하는 지를 다음과 같이 두 가지 측면에서 논의하였다. 우선, 한 개인이 자기 자신과의 관계맺음을 이루는 과업을 돕기 위해서는 레비나스가 주장하는 바와 같이 삶에 대한 향유의 욕구를 발현할 수 있는 교육적 환경이 마련되어야 한다. 이와 더불어서 궁극적으로 타인과 바람직한 관계를 맺을 수 있도록 유도하는 교육이 이루어지기 위해서는 실제 교육 현장 안에서 개인들이 타인과의 긍정적 만남을 경험할 수 있는 환경을 조성하려는 노력이 시도되어야 한다.
