일상적 공간에서 주부들의 TV 아침드라마 읽기

Abstract

본 연구는 TV 아침드라마를 시청하고 있는 주부들은 아침드라마와 어떤 관계를 맺고 있으며 그들의 일상에서 아침드라마 시청의 함의는 무엇인지를 밝히고자 하였다. 아침드라마는 아침시간대에 시청이 가능한 전업주부를 주요 대상으로 제작되는 TV 드라마 장르 중 하나로 꾸준히 높은 시청률을 기록하며 ‘주부의 장르’로서 자리매김하고 있다. 그러나 이 아침드라마에 대한 모니터 단체나 언론의 시선은 내용적인 부분에 대한 비판이 주를 이루고 있다. 본 연구자는 외부의 시선이 아닌 주부시청자 당사자는 일상적인 공간에서 아침드라마를 어떻게 받아들이고 있는지에 의구심을 갖고 질적인 방법으로 그들의 아침드라마 시청경험을 탐구하였다. 이에 따라 연구문제는 다음과 같이 설정되었다. 첫째, 일상적인 삶 속에서 주부들의 아침드라마 시청경험과 그 의미는 무엇인가. 둘째, 주부들은 아침드라마 시청을 통해 어떤 즐거움을 느끼는가. 이에 따라 아침드라마를 꾸준히 시청하고 있는 20명의 주부를 대상으로 심층인터뷰를 실시하여 그들의 아침드라마 시청 경험을 탐구하였다. 그 결과 아침드라마 시청은 주부의 삶에 있어 일상적, 사회적 의미를 지니고 있으며 현실적인 맥락에서 그들에게 즐거움을 제공하고 있음을 밝혀내었다. 연구 결과 주부의 일상적인 삶 속에서 아침드라마 시청이 갖는 의미는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 주부들은 아침드라마 방송 시간을 파악하여 그에 따라 일상의 행위들을 조절하거나, 반대로 일상생활의 흐름 속에서 무의식적인 의식으로써 아침드라마를 시청하고 있었다. 즉 아침드라마는 주부의 일상생활의 흐름과 긴밀히 연관되어 일상생활의 조정자 기능을 수행하고 있다. 둘째, 무엇보다 주부들이 아침드라마를 시청하는 시간은 ‘휴식’의 의미로 다른 가족구성원들에게서 벗어난 ‘자유의 시간’을 의미한다. 평소 사회적인 억압에 의해 혹은 다른 구성원에 의해 TV 시청 자체에 제한을 받고 있는 주부들은 혼자 있는 시간에 아침드라마를 시청하고 있었다. 그러나 사회적인 편견과 주어진 역할에 대한 책임감, 일의 경계가 모호한 가사일의 속성 때문에 주부들은 휴식 차원으로 아침드라마를 시청하면서도 죄의식을 느끼거나 가사 일을 병행하는 등 사회가 지워놓은 제약에서 완전히 자유로울 수는 없었다. 셋째, 때때로 주부들은 사적인 공간에서 끼리끼리 모여 아침드라마의 내용과 이에 대한 서로의 견해를 공유하며 담론적인 공간을 형성하고 있었다. 마지막으로 아침드라마의 내용적인 논의를 통해 주부들이 중요시하는 가치를 발견할 수 있었다. 그들은 전통적인 여성상을 옹호하고 있었으며, 가정의 행복을 최우선 가치로 여기고 있었다. 즉, 다른 가족 구성원을 위해 희생하고, 순종하고, 보조적인 역할을 하는 주부의 모습을 이상적으로 여기고 있었으며 등장인물에 대한 입장이나 결말에 대한 기대에서 가족의 가치를 중요시하고 있었다. 주부들이 아침드라마 시청을 통해 얻는 즐거움 역시 현실적인 맥락과 깊이 연관되어 있다. 주부들은 현실감과 동질감을 동시에 느낄 때 비로소 ‘감정적 진솔함’을 느끼고 있었다. 현실성은 주부를 드라마 속으로 빠져들게 하고 자신의 개인적인 경험과 드라마 내용이 부합되는 순간 주부들을 극도의 감정이입을 하게 된다. 본 연구자는 이를 ‘현실적 감응(Realistic Response)’에서 오는 즐거움이라고 보았다. 또한 주부들은 세상에 대한 이해를 확장시키고 삶의 이해를 구하는 간접경험의 장으로서 아침드라마를 시청하고 있었으며 이 때 주부들은 새로운 것을 보고 터득하는 즐거움을 느끼고 있었다. 이렇게 얻어진 지식과 이해는 궁극적으로 행복한 가정생활을 영위하고자 하는 주부 고유의 가치관과 연결된다고 볼 수 있다. 결론적으로 주부들의 일상생활에서 아침드라마 읽기는 상황적 맥락에 따라, 사회적 담론에 따라 때로는 개인적 경험에 따라 일상적인 생활습관, 저항적인 주체성의 발현, 현실적인 감정이입의 수단 등의 여러 의미를 생산해내고 있었다.;For housewives in Korea, Watching TV is one of the main method of using spare time. Expecially TV Drama broadcasted during morning time, so called “Morning Drama”, is mainly targeting the group of housewives. According to the audience rating survey, “Morning Drama” is definitely appealing to housewife audiences, even though it has been blamed by various social groups for the text. Therefore this study is focusing on the relationship between housewife audiences and “Morning Drama”, and trying to find out the meaning of watching it through their practical reception in their everyday life. “Morning Drama” is closely connected with the housewife audiences' life pattern for it's regularity. The timing of “Morning Drama” manages their routine habits which is repeatedly occurred in their everyday life as washing face, having a breakfast. On the other way, they might be watching “Morning Drama” as an unconscious ritual in their everyday life. In fact, “Morning Drama” is enrolled in housewives' everyday life and sometimes controls it. For housewife audiences, the context of watching “Morning Drama” has the meaning of rest itself. After sending family members to the work or school, they finally feel free and comfortable without them. It is originated the suppression which has been inherent by the society. They have some pressure as a wife or a mother in Korean society and it affects their watching experiences, directly or indirectly. Allowing that they enjoy a rest watching “Morning Drama”, they feel guilty or burden for the household choirs or social restriction. Sometimes housewife audiences of “Morning Drama” form a network in groups at a private place. They share contents of the drama, their opinion of it, and their sense of value revealed during discussion. They might form a discoursive place through this social network. Discussion of text of drama, their overriding concerns and values were exposed. They support the traditional women's image and they have priority to ‘happiness of family’. For housewife audiences, it is proper that wives in drama have to obey and sacrifice themselves for other family members and they are always expecting happy endings based on their prior value. Housewives' pleasure through “Morning Drama” is obtained in realistic context. The reality of “Morning Drama” makes housewife audiences get absorbed and feel empathy. Expecially if the particular situation of the drama is related to their personal experiences, empathy is maximized. In fact “realistic response” is one of the main reason to cause pleasure. And housewife audiences enlarge their understanding and knowledge of the society through the situations of the drama. This is a kind of learning pleasure. The knowledge and understanding through this course have a thread of connection with their own values. In conclusion, reading “Morning Drama” by housewife audiences in their everyday lives produces various meanings as everyday affairs, revelation of resistance subjecthood, method of empathy related to context, personal experiences and social discourses.
