Franc¸ois Couperin (1668-1733) was the most prominent composer for the clavecin in early-18th-century France. The prosperity of French Keyboard music in the 17th and 18th centuries was due to the clavecin music. The clavecin was the most important Keyboard instrument at that time in France. It was a stringed Keyboard instrument; the strings were plucked by the plectra. These collections were published in Paris, the first book in 1713, the second in 1717, the third in.1722 and the fourth in 1730. Couperin grouped his clavecin pieces into suites, called ordres. The four books of "Pie`ces de Clavecin include over 220 pieces grouped into 27 ordres. Each ordre contains from four to twenty-two peices. The pieces of each ordre are either in the same key or in parallel keys. Long before Couperin was writing his ordres, in Germany J. J. Froberger (1616-1667) had already established the suite consisting of the four basic dances: allemande, courante, sarabande, gigue. Couperin in his earlier suites adapted the German suite form which had been in use for nearly a century, but; in the later ones, he took up the poetic and descriptive titles and gradually abandoned the dance titles. Various musical characteristics are found in Couperin's clavecin music. Couperin's clavecin pieces are constructed in binary form and are composed in homophonic texture. In his clavecin works, Couperin created elegant melodies embellished with various ornaments and used dance rhythms, dotted rhythms, syncopations, suspensions, pedal points and diminished seventh chords. And, in these works, Couperin endeavoured to describe exactly what he saw in nature rather than to express his own inner sentiments. Couperin's clavecin music has not only the general characteristics of French music which has emphasis on clarity and naturalness but also the characteristics of the Rococo art which has emphasis on refinement, elegance, pleasantness, and profuse of ornamentation. F. Couperin represents the culmination in early-18th-century French clavecin music.
