이만규의「조선교육사」분석

Abstract

The question of viewpoints of educational history is a prior theme in order to understand the whole relationship between the education and the every conditions such as the society and the politics in the past. This means the requirement of appropriate view of history for the purpose of the right searching examination, the criticism, and the interpretation of educational phonomenon in the educational history. The purpose of this study lies in analyzing how 'The Educational History of Chosun' by Lee Man Kyu, which has a forerunning achievement of educational history of "the first educational history of Korea", and received a historical view as a sight of education, criticized and interprets the past education on the basis of view of history and lies in acquiring suggestion for the direction of description of educational history by discussing the merits and demerits in results of analysis. The content and procedure for this study are as following,; In chapter Ⅱ, it identified the features of types of such historical view imposed, by meaning and role which has to be preceded as the basic premise, on the description of the history of education, and investigated the background and meaning of writing of 'The Educational History of Chosun' by Lee Man Kyu. In chapter Ⅲ, it was demonstrated that the historical view received in 'The Educational History of Chosun' by Lee Man Kyu was the materialistic view of history, and in term of that view, this chapter analyzed how the education of Chosun period was discussed exhaustively by dividing into two main classes of the educational system and the educational content. In chapter Ⅳ, the content of the text was summarized and discussed the merits and demerits by investigating how the result of anallysis connected with the historical view and inconsistented with it. 'The Educational History of Chosun' by Lee Man Kyu has the forerunning achievement shortly after the liberation with lacking study on Korean education at that time, and also it has another achievement of the extention of prospect on the basic aspect of education with the critical view on the basis of the clear and consistent view of history in terms of the sight of history of Korean education. The criticism that the educational system of Chosun period was a means-function of reproduction of ruling ideology by the ruling classes and criticism against the anti-democratic education caused by the contempt and ignoring on the labor, and the productive activity in the educational content were evaluated to have the reasonable criticism based on the materialistic view of history by Lee Man Kyu. However it is judged as a little unreasonableness that the outlook of education by applicating the materialistic view of history to Chosun period which had not the construction of a capitalistic society in that the materialistic view of history had constructed under the system of western capitalism. Therefore we have needed the establishment of historical view of education able to diagnose the educational history rightly in our situation, and on this way the more critical analysis of education history will be written in the future.;교육사를 어떠한 관점에서 보느냐의 문제는 과거의 사회·정치 제반 정황과 교육과의 관계를 총체적으로 인식하기 위한 선결과제이다. 즉 교육역사 속에서 교육현상의 올바른 규명과 비판·해석을 위한 교육사적 작업에 적절한 사관의 수반이 요청된다는 것을 의미한다. 본 연구의 목적은 ' 최초의 한국교육사 '라는 선구적인 교육사적 업적을 지니고 있으면서 또한 교육을 보는 시각으로서의 하나의 사관을 수용한 이만규의 「조선교육사」가, 사관에 터해 과거의 우리나라 교육을 어떻게 비판·해석하고 있는가를 분석해 보고 그 공·과를 논함으로써 교육사 서술의 방향에 대한 시사를 얻고자 함을 목적으로 한다. 이를 위한 연구의 내용 및 절차는 다음과 같다. 제 2장에서는 교육사를 서술하기 위한 기본 전제로서 선행되어야 하는 사관의 의미와 역할이 교육사 서술에 부여하는 의미와, 그러한 사관의 유형별 특성을 밝히고, 이만규의 「조선교육사」가 서술케된 배경과 의의를 고찰하였다. 제3장에서는 이 만규가 「조선교육사」에서 수용한 사관이 유물사관임을 밝히고 그러한 관점에서 조선시대의 교육을 어떻게 논구하고 있는지를 교육제도와 교육내용으로 대별해서 분석해 보았다. 제4장에서는 본문내용을 요약하고, 분석한 결과가 사관과 어떻게 접맥되고 또 상충되고 있는가를 살펴보면서 그 공·과를 논의해 보았다. 이만규의 「조선교육사」는 당시 한국교육에 대한 연구가 부진하던 해방직후에 나온 개척적인 업적이며 또한 한국교육의 역사를 보는 관점에 있어서 비교적 뚜렷하고 일관된 사관에 터해 비판적 시각으로 교육의 기층적 측면에 대한 조망을 넓힌 또 하나의 업적을 갖는다. 즉 조선시대의 교육제도가 지배계층의 지배 이데올로기 재생산의 도구로서 기능했다는 비판과 교육내용의 노동·생산활동의 천시와 도외시로 인한 반민중적교육에 대한 비판은 이만규의 유물사관에 입각한 타당성있는 교육비판으로 평가된다. 그러나 유물사관이 서구 자본주의 체제하에서 성립된 것으로 자본주의 사회가 구성되지 못했던 조선시대에 적용하여 교육을 조명하는데는 무리가 있다고 판단되어진다. 따라서 우리교육의 역사를 우리상황에서 올바로 진단해 볼 수 있는 교육사관의 정립이 요청되며 이때 비로소 보다 비판적으로 교육을 분석한 교육사가 쓰여지게 될 것으로 기대된다.
