Abstract
The 21st century has brought a knowledge-based information society that requires independent and creative thinking capable of actively creating new knowledge, and accordingly, it puts an emphasis on problem-solving ability and mathematical ability. Schools, however, tend to be focused on getting higher scores on entrance exams through repeated, simple “answer-finding”, and students lack the ability for critical thinking to solve math problems – they solely depend on lessons from teachers and guides. Thus, the mathematics education community has been doing exhaustive studies on problem-posing to improve and develop problem-solving teaching/learning methods. Recently, However, the qualitative problem-posing activities has been conducted from elementary school to high school, analysis on high school 2 grade students have been insufficient. Considering that the students need to utilize their own mathematical knowledge and skill overall during problem-posing activities, it is necessary that researches related with problem-posing activities should be changed according to academic achievement level of students. After analyzing problem-posing activities with such three ways - properties change, result change, and arbitrary change - based on academic achievement level of high school 2 grade students, it investigate how it effects to academic achievement level of mathematics. The aims of this study art to collect preliminary data on problem-posing activities by conducting problem-posing classes with high school students and thus provide help problem-posing teaching/learning according to academic achievement levels. To this end, a few questions were selected as follows: 1. What is any differences of the problems from mathematical problem-posing activities of high school students in the academic achievement levels (upper-middle and lower-middle) of high school students? 2. Does the extent to which students find mathematical problem-posing difficult in classes vary according to academic achievement levels (upper-middle and lower-middle)? 3. How do problem-posing activities of students affect to academic achievement levels according to academic achievement levels (upper-middle and lower-middle)? For these, second-grade high school students were divided into two groups – an upper-middle group (group A and B) and a lower-middle group (group C and D) - according to mathematics learning achievement levels, and again they were divided into an experimental group (group A and C) and a control group (group B and D). Problem-posing classes were composed of 6 sessions – 2 sessions of exponent, log and matrix units. For the first question, the problems which the students pose are analyzed with work-sheets used during classes for acquiring relation between problem-posing activities and academic achievement levels. For the second question, checklists were used to find out the extent to which students find problem-posing activities and problem-posing difficult. pretest are conducted using the quantitative section of the National Level Achievement Test held in mid-March and a self-produced test for mathⅠ exponent unit, to assess the effect of problem-posing activities on mathematics learning achievement – the third of the aforementioned questions. The mid-term math exam of the first semester held in late April was used for posttest. The independent sample t-test was computed using SPSS 12.0 Windows version to compare the difference between the mathematics learning achievement of experimental group A and C, and a significant difference was found with statistical significance of 0.05. The results of the study are as follows: Firstly, the C group (lower-middle group) make more problems than the A group (upper-middle group) against expectation. For analyzing the cause of such a result, individual interviews are conducted after class. In the A group (upper-middle group), the students try arbitrary-change, which take more time, first rather than properties-change or result-change. Because the students of A group (upper-middle group) think that arbitrary-change are more interesting and helpful than properties-change or result-change, they try to do arbitrary-change first. In this case, if the students fail to problem-posing, the problems posed by the students are reduced. As a result, the numbers of problems posed by the C group (lower-middle group) are more than A group (upper-middle group). Secondly, the analysis of the extent to which students find problem-posing difficult suggests that group C – lower-middle – generally found it more difficult than group A – upper-middle. For arbitrary-change particularly, while group A increasingly found it easier as the class progressed, group C continued to find it difficult. Thirdly, students’ ability to understand and apply problems was improved through problem-posing activities, and problem-posing activities enhanced the mathematics learning achievement of students for mathematics. There was a statistically significant difference among the lower-middle group, particularly between the average of group C - who took a problem-posing class - and group D – who took a problem-solving class. This indicates that problem-posing activities have a larger effect on the lower-middle group than on the upper-middle group when it comes to the improvement of mathematics learning achievement. In conclusion, problem-posing activities are effective in students’ math-learning since they require accurate understanding of posed problems and the math concept of the problems, allowing students to improve their academic achievement. Therefore, introducing problem-posing activities in classes to help students improve their academic achievement and applying the activities to performance evaluation enable to utilize one of the assessment methods to find out the result of students’ problem-solving as well as their problem-understanding ability and problem-solving process. In addition, during problem-posing classes, arbitrary change-oriented activities should be applied to upper-middle groups rather than properties-change and result-change, and for lower-middle groups, properties change-oriented activities should be applied to help accurately understand mathematical concepts and problems so that students can have an interest and confidence in math. Also, teachers must be careful about selecting units and basic problems, and after individual problem-posing activities, they must make students correct the problems and find errors by providing opportunities for students to correct problems themselves. Since the subject of the study was confined to second-grade students, various teaching/learning materials on other units need to be developed and applied for other grades. As the mathematics learning achievement levels were divided into only two groups, the levels should be divided into more number of groups and a tailored study for problem-posing activities is needed for each group. Furthermore, implementing performance-evaluation using various evaluations for students’ problem-solving process and mathematical thinking after analyzing problems posed by students during students’ problem-posing activities, will be effectively used in public education.;21세기는 지식기반 정보화 사회로 자기 주도적으로 지식을 창조할 수 있는 자율적이고 창의적인 사고가 필요한 시대이며 이를 대비하기 위하여 7차 교육과정에서는 문제해결력과 수학적 힘을 강조하고 있다.
