다큐멘터리 필름을 활용한 중등학교 세계사 수업방안연구

Abstract

다큐멘터리는 영상매체라는 특성과 더불어 다른 영상매체에 비해 역사 교육적 잠재력은 더 크다고 인정받고 있다. 그러나 학계에서의 이론적 연구에만 그치고 있을 뿐 실제 중등학교 역사 수업에서 활용할 구체적인 활용방안은 연구되지 않고 있다. 따라서 본 연구자는 다큐멘터리를 활용한 역사 수업 모형을 개발하고 이를 실제 수업에 적용해봄으로써 그 가능성과 효과성을 검증하고자 하였다. 본 연구를 위해 일정한 기준에 맞춰 다큐멘터리를 선정․편집하였다. 다큐멘터리는 사이먼 샤마 기획․BBC 제작의 ‘파워 오브 아트’ 시리즈 중 ‘다비드’편을 이용하였다. 사이먼 샤마가 다비드의 그림을 통해 프랑스 혁명 과정에서의 광기와 폭력을 보여주는 자료를 선정함으로써 학습자에게 프랑스 혁명에 대한 비판적이고 다면적인 평가를 내려 볼 기회를 제공하는 것이 본 수업 모형의 목적이다. 이 목적과 더불어 영상매체를 활용한 교육이 가지는 한계점을 극복하고, 학습자의 이해를 돕고자 교사의 전략이 집적된 활동지를 제작하였다. 활동지는 평가문항, 분석지, 역사쓰기의 단계로 구성하였다. 각 단계는 교과서와의 연계뿐 아니라 단계와 위계를 가지게 제작하였다. 이렇게 제작된 다큐멘터리를 활용한 역사 수업 모형의 가능성과 효과성 검증은 전문가 평가와 활동지 분석의 단계를 거쳤다. 두 단계의 평가 분석 결과 이 수업모형이 역사적 사실에 대한 비판적 사고 능력을 향상시키는데 긍정적으로 작용했음을 확인하였다.;Documentary films are presumed and known to have better potential as educational resources than other media production. Yet, current academic world limits this potential to theory, drifting it apart from actual practice. In other words, not much research has been done on how documentary films could be utilized in teaching History. This paper focuses more on the applications of theory by developing a model lesson plan using documentary films as its vehicle. The paper also examines and analyzes the potentiality and effectiveness of the proposed model by applying it into an actual middle-school History class. For the purpose of my research, excerpts were selected under certain criteria, from Simon Schama's The Power of Art, a documentary series that was broadcasted during October and November 2006 on BBC. In his fourth installment, David, Schama documents the violence and lunacy pervading the French Revolution era as they appear in the paintings of a French painter, Jacques Louis David (1748-1825). By implementing selected excerpts from Schama's documentary episode (i.e., David), the proposed model-lesson is intended to provide opportunities for adolescent learners to construct comprehensive, critical lenses in the interpretation of historical affairs such as the French Revolution. Complementing the model-lesson plan is a task-based, integrated worksheet, which aims to better facilitate students' understandings of the lesson content, and to reduce the challengers film-mediated lessons may encounter during the learning process. This worksheet is designed into small stages that would normally include test items, analysis sheets and reflective writing(response jounals). These prearranged stages are designed not only in connection to the schools' history textbooks, but also designed to be proceeded step by step. Through two evaluation processes conducted by a group of experts in the field, both the plan and the worksheet have been approved to be rationally effective in helping students to build critical awareness and understanding historical events.
