Abstract
This study purposes to examine what effect discussion-based rule-adjusting activities give to 5-year-old children's compliance and teacher's attitude, and thus to help those activities to continue in a systematic and beneficial way in the classroom environment. For the aim, the study asks following questions: 1. What effect do discussion-based rule-adjusting activities give to children's compliance? 2. What effect do discussion-based rule-adjusting activities give to teacher's attitude? The study was conducted to examine what influence discussion-based rule-adjusting activities have on 5-year-old children's compliance, and to improve teacher's instruction in respect to class discussion and rule application. A total of 33 children (boy 15, girl 18), aged 5, of Rainbow class in Sky Kindergarten in Hwasung Gyunggi Province were selected for the study. The study continued from August 1 to October 19, 2008. Children were asked to discuss and choose rules that were not well complied with and needed to be revised. I as an observer and teacher, joined the discussion, set up compliance observation criteria and observed and wrote children's compliance in an event-by-event basis. Pre-discussion observation was conducted for 5 days, September 1 - 5, 2008. 33 children were observed for 15 minutes every day, when children were likely to play as briskly as possible out of a 40-minute free-choice activity class. The observation time was a total of 75 minutes; fifteen minutes for five days. I positioned myself at the place where I could clearly see children play without disturbing their play. I counted the number of non-compliance in an event-by-event basis. Post-discussion observation was performed for a total of 75 minutes across 5 days, October 20 - 24, 2008. I used the same method for pre-discussion observation and focused on what changes they were showing in respect to compliance. I went over again the compliance observation criteria and kept a journal by myself. The study collected three sources of materials: pre-discussion observation, post-discussion observation and observer journal. The number of non-compliance was identified to compare and analyze behavioral changes of children before and after discussion. Observer journal which was written throughout the experiment was analyzed to identify two points: 'change of perspective on rules,' and 'change in using teaching-learning method.' Findings of the study as follows: First, the study found that discussion-based rule-adjusting gave a positive effect to children's compliance. Children were found to stick to their rules better than before discussion. Their improved compliance was found in pre-defined rules: limiting the number of players to a certain level; never tattling; clearing and organizing toys; and never running around in the classroom. Children understood the importance of adjusting rules through discussion activity and they willingly started to adhere to their rules. Second, the study found discussion-based rule-adjusting had a positive effect to the teacher. I started to consider rules in a different perspective and tried to improve and revise their instruction methods. Most of all, I experienced the change of perspective in respect to making children keep their rules. Rules should not be set for controlling children's behavior any more. Instead, I understood that rules make the rights of both teacher and children respected in a class environment and make their class more enjoyable and less stressful. I also realized that children have an ability of leading discussion by themselves and adjusting rules, and that rules are so flexible to be adjusted, revised and changed anytime whenever needed. In addition, I started to apply different teaching/learning method to the class. I motivated children to expose themselves to situations that could cause problems and to be aware of the importance of rule adjustment. Also, I provided appropriate scaffolding to children in order to encourage them to willingly participate in the rule adjustment activities.
