한국 현대소설에 나타난 여성의 자각의식 고찰

Abstract

시대·사회변화와 서구의 여권운동, 그리고 여성해방운동의 영향은 전통적인 여성관에 침잠하고 있던 우리나라 여성들의 의식구조에 많은 변화를 가져왔다. 그리하여 전통적인 여성관에 대립된다고 할 수 있는 새로운 체제의 여성관의 대두는 우리나라 여성들이 전통적인 사회제도와 인습에서 기인된 윤리·도덕관과 여성관에서 탈피하려는 자각의식을 싹트게 하고 있다. 이러한 우리나라 여성의 자각의식이 1970년 이후 1979년 4월 말까지 발간된 한국현대소설 속에 투영되고 있는가를 Michel Zeraffa의 소설사회학 이론에 결부시켜 살펴보았다. 그 결과 여성의 자각의식현상은 1970년 이후 특히 1975년 이후의 한국현대소설 속에 뚜렷이 나타나고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 그리고 전통적인 여성관과 변화되고 있는 여성관의 대립현상에서 우리나라 여성들이 느끼고 있는 갈등은 선정된 소설들의 여주인공에게 반영되고 있는데 그 갈등의 양상은 크게 남녀의 성차별에서 오는 갈등과 인간관계에서 오는 갈등의 두 가지 유형으로 구분되고 있다. 남녀의 성차별에서 오는 갈등을 묘사한 작품으로는 손장순의 「여각하」와 「막내리다」, 전병순의 「안개부인」과 「독신녀」를 들 수 있는데 이러한 소석 속에는 남녀의 성차별로 인해 여성들이 갖는 부조리하며 불합리한 지위에서 여성들이 느끼는 갈등을 여주인공을 통해 나타내고 있다. 그리고 인간관계에서 오는 갈등을 묘사한 작품으로는 최의선의 「나인」과 「변인의 초상」 송원희의 「고독의 문」, 진이연의 「동행의 의미」, 박완서의 「어떤 나들이」와 「겨울나들이」, 서영은의 「살과 뼈의 축제」를 들 수 있는데, 이러한 소설들의 대부분이 가족구성원들 사이에서 여주인공들이 느끼는 갈등을 나타내고 있다. 그런데 이 두 가지 유형 속에 나타난 갈등의 양상은 궁극적으로 사회와 가정에서 여성들이 갖는 예속적인 지위에 대한 여성 스스로의 자각과 자기세계구축과 그에 다른 경제자립의 필요성에 대한 여성의 자각의식과 그리고 여성들의 성개방현상을 보이고 있다. 그리고 선정된 소설들의 작가는 모두 여류작가들이었으며, 소설 속에 묘사되고 있는 여성상이 종래 우리나라 현대소설 속에 묘사되고 있던 여성상과는 많은 변화가 있음을 알 수 있다. 그러한 사실은 우리나라의 여류작가들이 남성작가들에 비해 전통적인 사회제도와 인습에서 초래되는 여성관의 모순들을 더 뚜렷이 인식하고 있으며 거기에서 벗어나려는 우리나라 여성들의 자각의식을 소설 속의 여주인공을 통하여 반영시키고 있기 때문이라고 하겠다. 그리하여 한국현대소설 속에 나타나고 있는 여주인공의 자각의식은 우리나라 여성들의 자각의식이라 할 수 있으며 또 우리나라 여류작가들의 자각의식을 대변하고 있는 것이라 할 수 있다.;Social change, general trends of the times, and the women's rights movements in Europe and America have influenced the state of women's consciousness in Korea. however, korean women have up to within the last century or so been sunk in the rut of traditional attitudes towards women. The new consciousness that has been raised only recently directly opposes that tradition, and seeks to escape from the traditional social system and moral views. The purpose of this study is to examine how modern Korean novels, published from 1970 to the end of April 1979, have reflected changes in the consciousness of Korean women. Research for the study has been based on the methodology of Michel Zeraffa's 「Roman et socie´te´」. Analysis of eleven selections of contemporary Korean novels has yielded the conclusion that changes in the woman's identity in Korea have been indeed evident in Korean literature since 1970, particularly during the years since 1975. Two categories of discrimination confronted by the Korean woman have been examined, that is: 1. sexual discrimination encountered un society, and 2. discrimination engendered by the various human relationships of the family, eg. that of daughter-in-laws, and husband and wife. The heroines of the novels which have selected for the study must face conflicts arising from discrimination in both of these categories. The novels thus deal with the woman's consciousness of her subordinate status in society, her status at home, and the woman's realization of the importance of financial independence. In the consciousness of these heroines can be seen the process of liberation of the Korean woman. Interestingly enough, the writers of these selections are almost all woman writers, moreover, a great change in the heroines' consciousness in evident in Korean novels written since 1975, in comparison to early works. The changes reflect the acuter perceptions of sexual inequality among recent woman writer, and, indirectly, the raising of the consciousness of korean women in general. It is significant, however, that despite the increased awareness of the heroines in recent works as to the problems of the woman's condition in Korea, few concrete results are ever achieved as an outcome. It may be suggested, therefore, that the woman's movement, as reflected in contemporary Korean literature, is presently in a transitional stage that has yet to reach its fulfillment in the future.
