읽기 능력과 흥미도 향상을 위한 어린이 영자 신문 활용 초등 영어 프로그램 개발

Abstract

본 연구의 목적은 초등영어 학습자의 읽기능력 신장과 흥미도 향상을 위한 어린이 영자신문을 활용한 초등영어 프로그램을 개발하여 적용하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 세계화·정보화 시대를 맞이하여 세계 공통어인 영어의 중요성이 날로 높아지고 있다. 이러한 시대적 요청에 따라, 교육부는 1997년부터 초등 영어를 정규 교과목으로 도입하여 음성 언어 위주의 교육을 실시하고 있다. 그러나 정보화 시대에 의사소통을 한다는 것이 음성언어만을 사용하는 것이 아니며, 인터넷을 비롯한 다양한 매체를 통해 전해지는 정보의 대부분이 문자임을 생각할 때 영어교육에서 읽기 지도는 매우 중요하고 의미 있는 영역이다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 교과서 중심의 단조로운 영어 읽기 수업에서 탈피하여 학생들에게 실제적이면서 흥미를 제공해주는 다양한 내용의 읽기 지도의 방법으로 어린이 영자 신문을 활용한 초등 영어 프로그램을 개발하여 학생들의 읽기 능력을 향상 시키고 영어 학습에 대한 흥미를 갖게 하도록 하였다. 본 연구에서 개발한 프로그램은 Grave(1996)의 교육과정 설계 절차에 따라 이루어졌다. 먼저 요구분석을 통해 학습자의 필요가 무엇인지 알아보았고, 학습 목표를 설정하여 기대되는 학습 효과를 예상해 보았으며, 교수요목을 통해 가르쳐야 할 중심요소를 살펴보았고, 학습 자료와 학습 활동의 선택 및 개발을 통해 무엇을 어떻게 가르칠 것인지를 계획하였으며, 학습 내용과 활동의 조직을 통해 개발하려는 것이 무엇인지 밝혔고, 평가를 통해 학생들이 배운 것을 어떻게 평가할 것인가 이 프로그램의 효과를 어떻게 검증할 것인지에 대해 계획하였으며, 교수 환경에 대한 제고를 통하여 주어진 교수 환경이 무엇인지 알아보았다. 본 프로그램에서는 한 단원이 4차시로 구성되었으며, 각 차시 활동은 읽기 전·중·후 3단계 지도 절차를 본 프로그램에 맞게 재구성하였다. 각 단원의 1차시에는 편지글, 2차시는 퍼즐, 3차시에는 기사, 4차시에는 만화를 활용하여 차시별 교수-학습 과정을 구성하였다. 본 프로그램은 인천시 계양구 S 초등학교 5학년 31명을 대상으로 6주(총 12차시)동안 이루어졌고, 그 효과를 검증하기 위해 프로그램 실시 이전과 이후에 읽기 능력과 흥미도 검사를 위한 지필평가를 실시하였다. 이때 검사 결과는 SPSS/WIN 통계 프로그램을 이용하여 대응표본 t-검정으로 분석하였다. 또한 양적평가를 보완하기 위하여 질적 평가의 일환으로 학생의 자기 평가지의 반응을 백분율로 살펴보고, 프로그램 반응 설문지를 분석하여 어린이 영자 신문 활동에 대한 학생들의 반응과 태도에 대해 살펴보았다. 읽기능력 및 흥미도 향상을 위한 어린이 영자 신문 활동을 적용한 프로그램 실시 결과, 사전·사후 검사 결과 비교에 있어서 프로그램 실시 집단의 읽기능력과 흥미도는 통계적으로 유의미한 차이(p<.05)를 보였다. 따라서 본 프로그램은 아동의 읽기능력과 흥미도 향상에 효과가 있다고 할 수 있다. 또한 학생들의 자기 평가지와 프로그램 반응 설문지의 분석한 결과 학생들의 영어에 대한 자신감, 수업 참여도와 태도가 향상되었다는 긍정적 반응을 이끌어 낼 수 있었다. 결론적으로 본 프로그램은 어린이 영자 신문을 적용한 프로그램을 초등영어 수업에 적용하여 학생들의 읽기능력과 영어 학습에 대한 흥미도를 향상시키는데 효과적임을 알 수 있다. 하지만 본 프로그램은 5학년의 한 학급에 적용하였기에 이 연구에서 얻어진 결과를 일반화하기는 제한점이 있으므로 앞으로의 후속연구가 필요하다.;The purpose of the study was to develop elementary English program that appled the children's English newspaper for improving reading ability and interests. The program was based on the model of Grave(1996)'s course design. The first step was 'needs assessment' which showed what student's needs were, and the second step was determining goals and objectives which could expend the result. The third step was conceptualizing content which contained what necessarily should be taught. The fourth step was selecting and developing materials and activities which showed what and how to teach. The fifth step was organization of content and activities which showed what the program would be. The sixth step was about how to evaluate student's achievement and its program. The final step was consideration of resources and constraints which showed the class circumstance. In this program, one unit is consisted of 4th grade; 1st grade activity is consisted of English letters, 2nd grade is consisted of a crossword puzzle, 3th grade is consisted of various articles and 4th grade is consisted of a cartoon. Each grade is restructured of 3 steps which are based on the pre-reading, while-reading and post-reading activities. The developed program was implemented by the 31 students, 5th grade in S elementary school which is located in In-cheon. The research was experimented for 12 times during 6 weeks. To improve and validate the effects of the program, they were tested in the areas of the reading abilities and interests toward learning English. The result of assessment was analyzed in dependent sample t-certification by the statistical data program SPSS/WIN. The result of the survey showed that applying the children's English newspaper in elementary English program has a statically significant differences (p<.05) in the fields of the reading abilities and interests when compared to the former evaluations. In addition to evaluation of the development degree of the reading abilities and interests, that of emotional reaction to English learning was made by assessment of student's self-evaluation and program response questionnaire. It showed the student's preference of the using a children's English newspaper and the increase of student's satisfaction and participation. In conclusion, the English program using the children's English newspaper was effective in increasing reading abilities and interests toward learning English and the student's positive reaction. However, there are limitations in generalizing the effects as the above the results. The result of the study was restricted to the 31 students in one elementary school during a short period of time. Therefore, a follow-up research that could apply the aforementioned effects is necessary to applied to the other grade students to see the results.
