수리논술교육에 대한 교사와 학생의 인식 조사 및 수리논술에 대한 성취도와 수학성취도의 상관성 연구

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyze the effect of the achievement on mathematical essay writing whether mathematical essay writing examination can effectively measure the students’ mathematic thinking ability or not. This will have implications on the proper future direction for advance in this type of examination by understanding teachers’ and students’ perception on education for mathematical essay writing. For this purpose, the correlation between the attitudes towards mathematical essay writing and the academic achievement on mathematics was analyzed. And so did the correlation between the achievement on mathematical essay writing and their academic achievement on mathematics. The research questions are as follows. 1. How is the teachers’ and students’ perception on the education for mathematical essay writing? 2. How is the correlation between the attitudes towards mathematical essay writing and their academic achievement on mathematics? 3. How is the correlation between the achievement on mathematical essay writing and their academic achievement on mathematics? To answer the first research question, the survey was done to 10 teachers in Seoul who is in charge of the education for mathematical essay writing and 95 students in Seoul. The findings are as follows. First, most schools where the teachers in the survey are working at have their educational program for preparing mathematical essay writing examination as a form of after-school activity. Second, most teachers and students perceived that the educational program for preparing mathematical essay writing examination is necessary. The teachers replied that the teachers who had taken the training program for mathematical essay writing and teachers who are interested on the education for mathematical essay writing are suitable for teaching it, while the students replied that lecturers from outside are suitable for teaching it. The teachers’ answers were different of those of the students in the question about the difficulties that students have when they are taking the examination, which shows the teachers’ misunderstanding on this issue. Third, the teacher replied that the lack of textbooks and teaching guidance plans on mathematical essay writing is the obstacle in teaching so it is hard to set the course direction. Fourth, they replied that the training program for teacher is necessary, which means that they perceive the need to have the expertise. To answer the second research question, the survey was done to 84 students in Seoul. The findings are as follows. And correlation between the attitudes towards mathematical essay writing and their academic achievement on mathematics was analyzed. Fist of all, the correlation between the attitudes towards mathematical essay writing and their academic achievement on mathematics shows a low level of positive correlation coefficient which is 0.275. And the correlation coefficient between the students’ confidence to mathematical essay writing and their academic achievement on mathematics was statistically insignificant in the p>.01 level of significance. The students’ interests in mathematical essay writing and their academic achievement on mathematics have a positive correlation which is 0.306. To answer the third research question, the survey was done to 91 students in Seoul, and the correlation between the achievement on mathematical essay writing and their academic achievement on mathematics was analyzed. The findings were as follows. First of all, the achievement on mathematical essay writing and their academic achievement on mathematics have a positive correlation and the correlation coefficient was 0.419 in the level of total samples. And the relation is not very correlated only in the mid-performance subgroup (46%), and the correlation coefficient was 0.351. Although most teachers and students perceived that the educational program for preparing mathematical essay writing examination is necessary, the lack of textbooks and teaching guidance plans on mathematical essay writing is the obstacle in teaching and it is hard to set the course direction. And we can see that the students don’t trust very much the school education on preparing mathematical essay writing examination. This suggests that the teachers’ constant efforts and attentions are demanded. And this also implies that the clear direction on mathematical essay writing has to be set so that the public education for this examination can be settled. The existing studies done previously were most about the perception of teachers. This study, however, analyzed the correlation between the achievement on mathematical essay writing and their academic achievement on mathematics to examine its intended purpose. Therefore this study can be a foundation of further studies on this issue.;2008학년도부터 대학입학전형에서 통합교과형 논술고사를 시행하는 대학이 증가하였다. 이는 현대사회가 요구하는 교양인의 필수 능력인 비판적 사고와 창의력을 지닌 인재를 가려내기 위해 통합교과형 논술이라는 평가를 통해 단면적인 지식보다는 다면적인 창조성을 갖춘 사람을 선발하려는 것이다. 따라서 통합교과형 논술이란 무엇을 알고 있는가를 측정하려는 것이 아니라, 그것을 어떻게 활용할 수 있는가를 측정하려는 것이다. 이러한 입시의 변화에 맞추어 최근 각 고등학교에서는 새로운 논술교육에 관심을 모으고 있다. 본 연구는 고등학교에서의 통합교과형 논술 중 수리논술교육에 대한 교사와 학생의 인식을 확인함으로써 학교현장에서의 수리논술교육의 발전 방향에 대한 시사점을 얻기 위한 것이며, 수리논술에 대한 태도와 수학성취도의 상관관계와 수리논술에 대한 성취도와 수학성취도의 상관관계를 분석하여 수리논술이 인문학 중심의 언어논술과 달리 수학적 사고력을 측정하고자 하는 목적을 반영하고 있는지를 분석하는데 그 목적이 있다. 이 연구에서 설정한 연구 문제는 다음과 같다. 연구문제 1은 수리논술교육에 대한 교사와 학생의 인식은 어떠한가? 연구문제 2는 수리논술에 대한 태도와 수학성취도간의 상관관계는 어떠한가? 연구문제 3은 수리논술에 대한 성취도와 수학성취도간의 상관관계는 어떠한가? 연구문제 1의 연구를 위하여, 고등학교에서 수리논술교육을 담당하고 있는 교사 10명과 서울지역의 인문계 고등학교 2학년 학생 중 서울지역 인문계 고등학교의 자연계열 학생 95명에게 설문조사를 하였고, 설문지 분석을 통하여 얻어진 주요 연구 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 설문에 응한 교사들의 학교에서는 모두 방과후 학교의 형태로 학생들에게 수리논술교육을 실시하고 있었다. 둘째, 대부분의 교사와 학생들은 수리논술교육의 필요성을 인식하고 있었다. 수리논술교육 담당 교사에 대해 교사는 수리논술연수를 받은 수학교사와 수리논술연수를 받지 않았지만 수리논술에 관심이 있는 수학교사에 많은 응답을 한 반면, 학생들은 수리논술전문 외부교사에 가장 많은 응답을 하여 교사와 학생의 인식의 차이를 보여주었다. 또한 수리논술문 작성시 학생들의 어려움에 대한 설문에서 교사와 학생의 응답에 차이가 나타나 교사의 이해 부족을 나타내었다. 셋째, 수리논술지도에 대한 장애요인에 대해 수리논술교육 담당교사들은 교재와 지도안의 부재로 인해 수리논술의 지도방향을 잡기 어렵다고 하였다. 넷째, 수리논술교육의 개선방향으로 수리논술교육에 대한 교사 연수가 필요하다고 생각하여 학생들에게 수리논술을 지도하기 위해 수리논술에 대한 전문지식의 필요성을 인식하고 있는 것으로 나타났다. 연구문제 2의 연구를 위하여, 인문계 고등학교 2학년 자연계열 학생 84명의 수리논술에 대한 태도와 수학성취도의 상관관계를 분석하였고, 연구 결과는 다음과 같다. 먼저 수리논술에 대한 태도와 수학성취도의 상관관계 지수는 0.275로 높지 않은 양의 상관관계가 존재하였다. 또한 수리논술에 대한 자신감과 수학성취도의 상관관계 지수는 0.145이지만 통계적 유의수준()에서 유의하지 않은 것으로 판명되었고, 수리논술에 대한 흥미도와 수학성취도의 상관관계 지수는 0.306으로 양의 상관관계를 갖는 것으로 분석되었다. 연구문제 3의 연구를 위하여, 인문계 고등학교 2학년 자연계열 학생 91명을 대상으로 수리논술에 대한 성취도 검사를 실시하여 수학성취도와의 상관관계를 분석하였고, 연구 결과는 다음과 같다. 먼저 전체집단의 수리논술에 대한 성취도와 수학성취도의 상관관계 지수는 0.419로 양의 상관관계가 존재하는 것으로 판명되었다. 또한 수준별 집단에 따른 상관관계 분석 결과 중위 46% 집단에서만 상관관계 지수 0.351로 약한 양의 상관관계가 존재하는 것으로 밝혀졌다. 학교 현장의 교사들이나 학생들은 수리논술교육의 필요성을 인식하고 있었지만, 교사들은 수리논술교육에 대한 교재와 지도안의 부족으로 수리논술지도의 방향을 잡는데 어려움을 겪고 있었고, 학생들은 학교에서의 수리논술교육에 대해 높지 않은 신뢰도를 갖고 있다는 것을 알 수 있었다. 이는 현장 교사들의 꾸준한 관심과 연구, 그리고 그에 앞서 수리논술에 대한 명확한 방향이 제시되어야만 수리논술교육이 공교육으로 정착할 수 있을 것임을 시사한다. 통합교과형 논술에 대한 지금까지의 연구들은 논술교육에 대한 교사의 인식에 대하여 조사한 것들이 대부분이다. 그렇지만 본 연구에서는 수리논술고사가 수학적 사고력 및 수리능력을 측정하고자 하는 목적을 잘 반영하고 있는지를 알아보기 위해 수리논술에 대한 성취도와 수학성취도의 상관관계 분석을 하였다. 따라서 본 연구 결과는 보다 수리논술에 대한 보다 확장된 연구의 기본적인 근거가 될 수 있을 것이다.
