Abstract
This paper intends to examine the influence of the social and thought backgrounds in the 19th century to mathematics and the formation process of the theory of basic mathematics by studying the mathematical concepts and structures built as the bases of modern mathematics. In this paper, as a matter of convenience, the period from the end of the 18th to the 19th century is called the modern times. This period suffered much more political and economic changes than ever before in Europe. Continuous social changes transformed the concepts of science and there were numerous changes in the basic thoughts of mathematics. Romanticism brought about a liberal way of thinking and this had an effect on establishing the basic phase in the liberalization of mathematical thoughts. A mark of modern mathematics is that it arranged the mathematics so far more precisely in theory. Analysis became to have mathematical precision and the basic theory of general function (complex variables) was built by enlarging the numper system from the real to the complex. Thus, a new world of analysis was studied in principle. Algebra dealt mainly the symbols and the operational structures as group and field was shaped up and hence mathematics became abstract little by little. Geometry beyond the Euclidean space formed non-Euclidean space and, as a special field identifying the essence of space, became a part of mathematics by mathematicalizing the infinite space. The development of non-Euclidean geometry made it possible to wear a new appearence in such fields as arts, religion, mathematics, and natural sciences and it was developed to the topological geometry through projective and analytic geometry. Objects of mathematics since the Greek had been based on the finite existance theory under the hypothesis that the space was the enlargement of finites or the limitation of their combination, whereas in recent times they were placed on the infinite existance theory which located the space in one's own with infinite attitude. At the same time of Nietzsche's atheism, Cantor claimed that the essence of mathematics lies in liberty and insisted on brave breaking away from the past mathematics. The infiniteness, which many scholars had been unwilling to reveal its essence, was unlocked and studied in spite of numerous protests. The appearance of this thought on infiniteness was considered to mean the danger of rationalism and the trouble of the times. Cantor established the infinite set theory by introducing the concept of power. By giving a proof over a proof, he finally achieved the transfinite arithmatic. He, thus, affected drastically the 20th century's mathematics, and prepared for the basis of new mathematics. Hilbert, regarding the set theory as an important basis of modern mathematics, improved the concept of infinite more systematically. He reconstructed mathematics by the name of Benthanism and formed a topological space by improving abstrat mathematics. Thus, new geometry, called topology, was born. Mathematics has gradually become a field signifying the structure and nowadays it is modified according to Benthanism in every field, studied in relation to other fields and is becoming to be abstracted. In this paper, it is emphasized that the development of mathematics should not be considered separately, from the background of times and society without going over the effects which the background of culture and thought of the end of the 19th century gave to the improvement of mathematics so that they connected the past mathematics to modern one.
