Abstract
Modern mathematics has been developing independently as a unique field of the science like other branches of sciences and has played basic role for others. However, in old days the distinction between mathematics and other branches of sciences was not clear : mathematics was closely related with cultural, social, and other historical circumstances. These characteristic features were more remarkable in the old oriental countries where ancient cultures had developed in prosperity. Therefore, studying oriental mathematics could be key issue to understand the relationship between the oriental and the western culture. In China, there is "Chou Pei Suan Ching", a first comprehensive compilation of mathematical knowledages, of which date of writing is not clear. This book described both the combined knowledges of astronomy and mathematics. Also it dealt with the very practical ones; in this book the rudiments of Pythagorian theorem are included which seemed to be derived from measurement experiences. Another contemporary book, "Chui-Chang Suan-Shu" contains the problems which became the basis of Chinese mathematics. Therefore, we can trace the features of initial Chinese mathematics by analyzing the abovementioned two books. We can find some particularities in the course of development of Chinese mathematics which has been developing independently. First of all, Counting rods and Suan phan could be mentioned for the particularities. Counting rods was not only a calculating tool aut also a inscribing measure. Suan phan, which was used as a supplementary tool of Counting rods, is regarded as the origin of the existing abacus. Second, the recognition of the concept of positive number and negative number was applied. to recognize the concept of the fraction and played a very important role. Third, Chinese found out the considerably accurate numerical value for π, which was the result of efforts to find out the area of circles. Mathematical knowledges in China were in full bloom in the Song Dynasty when the Chinese culture was at the peak of prosperity. There were a lot of mathematicians and their works. "Chu Shih-Chieh" wrote "Suan-Hsueh Chi-Meng", an introduction to mathematics, and "SsuYuan Yu-Chien" which includes equations and progression. As scholars dealing with "Approximate solutions of Horner", there were "Li Chih, Chin Chu-Shao" and "Yang Hui" who, respectively, wrote "Tse-Yuan HaiChing", "Shu-Shu Chiu-Chang", and "Tang Hui Suan In Chong Dynasty after the Song and Meng Dynasties when western mathematics was introduced, the development of the Chinese mathematical knowledges came to the end. Chinese mathematics which had followed the above-mentioned course of development, has its own uniqueness. First, it has a lot of legendary features. Second, it lacks theoretical framework and was discussed for practical purposes. Third, numbers were given mystic meaning. Fourth, it failed to have further progress. Fifth, the motive for mathematical innovations were made by the general culture. The first comprehensive compilation of mathematical knowledges in India was the so called "Sulvassu ̄tras". The existing version of them is "Apastamba" which contains the proportions of the three sides of a right-angled triangle and the way to make a perfect square with the same area as a regular square. As works representing the Sanskrit culture there are "Siddha ̄ntas". Among them, "Su ̄rya Siddha ̄nta", written in rylic verse, exists in its complete form. It shows some signs of Greek influence and contains trigonometry as its main content. After this, "Aryabhatiya", a large-scale compilation of mathematical knowledges, appears which might be called a base of Indian mathematics. Indian mathematics which had developed to become a solid basis for the modern mathematics has several distinctive results. First, it completed the notation system of numbers including zero. Second, it developed trigonometry mainly based on sine. Third, it invented integer calculation methods including multiplicative and divisional methods known, respectively, as "gelosia-multiplication" and "gallery method". All these results together with other mathematical knowledges were a great contribution to the western mathematics. About a century after Ariabhata, i3rahmagupta appears who wrote "Brahmagupta Siddhanta" which comprehensively dealt with mathematical achievements developed so far by Indians. Furthermore, the contents were richer and more upgraded such that it might represent the development of Indian mathematics. Bhaskara who wrote "Vija -Ganita" and "Lilavati" was virtually the last Indian mathematician. In his works, there appear his views on the divisor some of which are correct and some are incorrect. Indian mathematics also has its own features. First, mathematical knowledges were motivated for the purpose of constructing temples and altars. Second, there were considerable discontinuities in the development process of mathematics. Third, mathematical descriptions were written in verse. Fourth, there were noticable interchanges with other cultures. Fifth, simple and complex problems and correct and incorrect approaches were simultaneously described. While Chinese mathematics appears to have'developed without any connection with other cultures, Indian mathematics had frequent interchanges with the West. However, it seems possible to find some signs of contact for Chinese mathematics with other parts of the world as studies progress on Chinese mathematics And there are a lot of unique characteristics in Indian mathematics. Therefore, the results of studies on oriental mathematics are a tool for finding evidences of the uniqueness of oriental culture and its contribution to the formation of the Western culture.;近代數學은 다른 科學과 마찬가지로 학문의 뚜렷한 한 분야로 獨立·發展하는 가운데 餘他科學의 基礎가 되고 있다.
