Abstract
The purpose of this study was to grasp the relations between high school students? dysfunctional thought in future academic career according to the department of school and their career undecided. To do this, high schools were divided into academic and vocational school, and research was carried out to find out about if there are any significant correlations between students? dysfunctional thought in career and their career undecided, and factors that have influences on their career undecided were also investigated. In addition, it was investigated if there was difference according to the department of school, and also the difference in career undecided according to academic achievement. The topics of this research work are as follows: First, are there any significant relations between dysfunctional thought in career and career undecided? Second, have the sub-factors of dysfunctional thoughts in career, which are different one another, affected of both academic and vocational school in their career undecided? Third, is there any difference in the degree of career undecided between academic high school and vocational high school? Fourth, is the career choices made by both academic high school students and vocational high school students related to the level of grades exhibited in each school? That is, does the number of cases of their indecisiveness on career choice become larger when their grades become lower regardless of the difference of school? To test this, 277 first and second-year students attending two types of high schools were sampled from 4 different high schools located in the vicinity of Seoul and Incheon. And, to measure their dysfunctional thought in career, the Career Thoughts Inventory (CTI), which was designed by Sampson, et al. (1996) and modified by Lee Jae-chang, Choi In-hwa and Park Mi-jin (2004), was used, and to measure the level of career undecided, Career Decision Scale (CDS), which was designed by Osipow, et al. (1980), and modified by Go Hyang-ja (1992), was used. For analysis of materials and data, correlation analysis between dysfunctional career thought and career undecided was performed, and to investigate the factors that have influences on career undecided, regression analysis was performed. And, to find out the differences in career undecided according to the department of school and grade, t-test was performed. The results of the study are as follows: First, the results showed that there were significant static relations between whole dysfunctional thought in career of two types of high school students, and career choice scale undecided. However, the results from analysis indicated that there were no significant correlations between grade and career undecided. Second, results from investigation of dysfunctional thought in career factors that affect career undecided revealed that there were significant influences of decision making confusion and commitment anxiety upon students of academic high schools, and that there were significant influences only of whole dysfunctional thought in career on the students of vocational high school. Third, results from analysis of differences in career undecided according to the department of school exhibited that there were no significant differences, and that there were no significant differences in career undecided according to academic achievements. Taken together, researcher could find out that dysfunctional career thought was the factor that had influences on career undecided, that there were no differences in career undecided according to the department of school, although factors that affected career undecided were different, and that there were no differences in career undecided according to grade.
