Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the nature and the motivation of the adult participants in community performing groups in Korea. The three main research interests were: first, to discover the general and musical background of participants, second, to find out the motive of their participation, in terms of the four motivation categories (intellectual, competency-mastery, social and stimulus-avoidance) and lastly, to determine the factors that influence the differences in the motivation among the participants. The questionnaire was developed in 5-point Likert scale for the motivation responses. Two hundreds eighty nine responses were analyzed. The study found that the majority of the participants were female (69.2%), in their thirties or above (70.2%), university graduates (55%). The players had rich musical background. They grew up in homes that engendered musical development (72.3%). 80.6% of them had musical training for at least 5 years (41.5%). The participants were motivated firstly by the competency-mastery, and followed by the intellectual stimulus, then the stimulus-avoidance and finally by the need to socialize. Their musical background rather than the general background distinguished the differences in the participants’ motivation. As the results of this survey, it can be known that previous music experience effects on music performance. The higher is the motivation, the more active is the music performance. Music education is very important to the student's life. So we should give efforts to the music education in class, after class with the various musical programs.
