Abstract
Starting from 1999, junior high schools have carried out achievement evaluations conforming to the 7th national curriculum for eight years. As the curriculum sets its roots down, assessments of its respective activity fields have been made. This study has been taken up to inquire whether it has been performed to balanced assignment about traditional music in aspect of assessment contents. Thus, the purpose of this study is to present whether junior high schools evaluate matters related to traditional music in performance assessments. Also, to show how the field of traditional music is evaluated. The theoretical background has been considered by separating it into 'the assessment of music education' and 'the assessment of traditional music education' according to documental research methods. First of all, the conception and specialty of music assessment, the direction of music performance assessment, the types of music performance assessment have been mentioned. Then, the definition of traditional music, the significance of traditional music education, conents of study and evaluation related to traditional music in the 7th curriculum of junior high schools, and traditional music education according to the developmental features of a junior high schooler have been observed. In the analysis of the current situation, questionnaires and phone interviews with junior high school music teachers in Goyang city of Gyeonggi-do have been analyzed by each question. The questionnaires were distributed to 64 music teachers from 31 junior high schools. And 40 copies were retrieved from 26 schools, announcing the recovery rate at 62.5%. And the answers of this questionnaires is totaled a different unit by the specific character of each question. The results showed that traditional music was mostly not evaluated in singing. In the instrumental and creative fields, 43.6% and 30.8% respectively answered that traditional music was evaluated. When asked whether traditional music was evaluated in music appreciation, the highest percentage of 75.6% answered yes. Putting all this together according to school rankings, it can be said that the majority of junior high schoolers in Goyang city do not experience singing evaluation of traditional music pieces. On the other hand, students experience the evaluation of traditional music appreciation more than once. Moreover, about half of the students can be said to experience evaluations in instrumental and creative traditional music. On the whole, apart from the singing field, more respondents than expected answered that traditional music was evaluated. 97.5% answered that traditional music must be appropriately included in plans of assessment made in the early quarters of the scholastic year. However, only 72.5% said they actually figured it in the plan. Meanwhile, a balanced distribution of traditional music was thought to be focused on an extensive inquisition of many schools for a year rather than a thorough examination of one. As for the reason why traditional music was not evaluated, the lack of instruction ability was recognized as the main reason. The increase in training opportunities and the activation of the instructor pool system for traditional music were counted as urgent alternative proposals.
