대중음악에 대한 청소년들의 인식 및 또래집단의 영향 조사

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to ascertain the role of peer group in accepting popular music among Korean adolescents by analyzing their understanding and use of popular music. Their understanding and use of classical music are also examined in order to propose a way to make school music education more familiar and more accessible. Ultimately, this research aims to present a curriculum that can provide the methodology to enhance musical education for adolescents. A survey was conducted with 11 classes of seventh-graders, each selected from coeducational high schools in 11 school districts in Seoul. I used questionnaires on topics such as 'understanding and use of popular music,' 'effects of peer group on personal acceptance of popular music,' and 'understanding and use of classical music.' A total of 356 students from 11 schools participated in the survey. Among the participants the number of girls (55.3%) was larger than that of boys. The results of the survey are as follows: Firstly, adolescents listened to popular music more frequently than Western classical music or Korean traditional music. Popular music serves dual roles of getting rid of stress from schoolwork and providing excitement to their daily life. Teenagers usually listen to popular music through TV or Internet which allows them to save time and money, rather than going to a concert. Most of them however hoped that there were much more diverse ways to access popular music. Secondly, a peer group did not significantly affect personal preference of popular music. The adolescents did not alienate those with different tastes for music. The difference in musical taste was not a principal cause of becoming outcast among them. Girls were more significantly affected by their peers than were boys. The results show that Korean adolescents today have a great independence in choosing their own popular music. On the other hand, peer relationship appears to influence the formation of close ties among adolescents through popular music. Thirdly, many adolescents showed positive attitudes toward classical music and most of them believed that listening to classical music would help improve their concentration while studying. However, they thought that access to classical music was more limited compared with popular music. They also thought that there was little common musical traits between school music and popular music. The study revealed that the young generation of Korea is highly personal in selecting their favored music. The fact that peer relationship significantly affects the formation of strong ties among adolescents with music as a medium provides helpful insight in restoring musical education to increase opportunities for adolescents to access classical music. A new educational policy is needed to improve school education through which adolescents can have better access to classical music and develop positive interests. A new educational system should provide more attractive instructional contents and effective methods by diversifying genres of music, for example, including popular music. Educational policy-makers as well as music teachers must provide a variety of programs and opportunities for both popular and classical music so that adolescents can identify with each other in a more desirable way and enjoy more diverse musical culture.;이 연구는 우리나라 청소년들의 대중음악에 대한 인식과 이용 실태를 알아보고 특히 대중음악의 수용과정에서 또래집단이 어떠한 영향을 미치는지에 대해 조사하기 위한 것이다. 더불어 클래식음악에 대한 인식과 이용실태도 조사하여 이 연구의 결과를 통해 청소년들이 도외시하는 학교음악교육을 보다 가깝게 느끼고 쉽게 접할 수 있는 방안은 없는지 알아보고자 한다. 궁극적으로 이 연구 조사는 음악교육을 활성화 할 수 있는 방안을 제시하고 음악교사들이 교육과정을 통해 청소년들을 어떻게 이끌어주어야 하는지에 대한 방법론을 찾아보기 위한 것이다. 본 연구를 위해 서울특별시 전체 11개의 교육청에 소속된 남·녀공학 고등학교 중 한 학급 씩을 선정하여 1학년 학생들을 대상으로 ‘대중음악에 대한 인식과 이용실태’, ‘대중음악 수용에 있어서의 또래집단의 영향’, ‘클래식음악에 대한 인식과 이용실태’에 관하여 설문지를 통해 조사 연구하였다. 조사대상자는 전체 11개교의 356명으로 성별의 경우 여학생이 55.3%로 남학생에 비해 많았으며 다음과 같은 결론을 도출하였다. 첫째, ‘대중음악에 대한 인식과 이용실태’를 조사한 결과 청소년들은 대중음악을 듣는 시간이 클래식음악이나 한국전통음악에 비해 월등히 많았고, 대중음악은 그들에게 있어 학업에의 스트레스를 해소하기 위한 도피처이며 삶의 활력소가 되고 있었다. 그들은 콘서트 등의 참여에 비해 상대적으로 시간과 경비가 절약되는 TV나 인터넷을 통해 대중음악을 접하고 있었으며 대부분의 청소년들이 대중음악을 접할 수 있는 기회가 다양해져야 한다고 느끼고 있었다. 둘째, ‘대중음악 수용에 있어서의 또래집단의 영향에 관한 조사’ 결과 청소년들이 대중음악을 수용하는 데에 있어 또래집단이 미치는 영향은 그다지 크지 않았다. 청소년들은 대중음악의 취향이 서로 다르다고 해서 또래친구를 멀리하거나 거리감을 두지 않았으며 그것이 그들 사이의 핵심적인 따돌림의 원인이 되고 있지도 않았다. 또 성별차를 살펴보면 남학생보다 여학생이 대중음악과 또래친구의 영향을 훨씬 더 많이 받고 있었다. 결과를 통해 현재 우리나라의 청소년들이 대중음악을 받아들이는 데에 있어 자신의 주관적인 취향이 크게 작용하고 있다는 것을 알 수 있다. 이처럼 대중음악에의 개인적 취향이나 호감도가 또래집단의 영향을 크게 받고 있지는 않았으나 또래관계가 대중음악에 대한 그들 사이의 공감대 형성에 큰 영향을 주고 있었다는 점은 주목할 만 하다. 셋째, ‘클래식음악에 대한 인식과 이용실태’를 조사한 결과 많은 청소년들의 클래식음악에 대한 호감도는 긍정적이었고 그들 대부분이 클래식음악의 청취가 집중력 향상에 도움이 된다고 여기고 있었다. 그러나 그들은 클래식음악이 대중음악에 비해 상대적으로 접하기 어려운 음악이라고 여기고 있었으며 학교음악과 대중음악의 상관관계는 낮다고 느끼고 있었다. 이처럼 현재 우리나라의 청소년들은 대중음악의 수용에 있어 개인적인 기호나 취향이 또래집단과의 관계에 의해 크게 좌우되지 않고 비교적 주관적으로 음악을 받아들이고 있다. 이것은 전자매체를 통한 정보화 시대의 음악청취·수용과정 변화와 개인화에 따른 새로운 세대의 특징적인 모습을 잘 반영한 것으로 여겨진다. 그러나 또래관계가 대중음악에 대한 청소년들의 공감대 형성에는 크게 영향을 주고 있다. 따라서 클래식음악을 접할 수 있는 기회를 늘려주고 또래집단을 통해 문화적 공감대를 형성해줄 수 있다면 잃어가는 음악교육의 자리를 되찾는 데 도움이 될 것이다. 우리는 클래식음악에 호감을 가진 청소년들이 학교교육을 통해 음악을 자주 접할 수 있게 하는 교육정책의 변화를 촉구하고, 대중음악을 포함한 음악장르의 다양화로 호감을 줄 수 있는 수업내용과 방법을 모색하여 보다 친근하게 학교음악을 접할 수 있도록 해주어야 하겠다. 더불어 또래친구와 교감할 수 있는 대중음악·클래식음악 프로그램과 공간을 많이 제공하여 음악문화를 바르게 즐길 수 있도록 해주는 것이 음악교사의 책임이자 곧 우리 사회의 책임일 것이다.
