요한 세바스찬 바흐 (J.S.Bach, 1685-1750)의 《마태수난곡》(Matthäus-Passion, BWV 244) 연구

Abstract

요한 세바스찬 바흐(Johann Sebastian Bach, 1685~1750)는 음악가로서 평생 동안 천여 곡 이상의 작품을 작곡하였다. 이는 단순히 작품 수가 많은 것뿐만 아니라 기악 독주곡에서부터 합창곡, 종교작품과 세속작품 등에 이르기까지 작품의 장르와 규모 역시 다양하다는 점에서 음악의 역사에서 중요한 위치를 갖고 있다. 그중에 바흐가 라이프치히 시절 작곡한 《마태수난곡》(Matthäus-Passion, BWV 244)은 그가 속한 시대 및 종교적 상황, 가문의 영향 그리고 자신만의 음악적 경험이 응축된 작품이라고 볼 수 있다. 그럼에도 불구하고 이 작품은 현재 방대한 규모, 긴 연주시간, 특별한 시기에만 연주되는 장르적 특성으로 인해 자주 연주될 수 없는 상황적 한계가 있다. 본 논문은 바흐의《마태수난곡》에 사용된 세 종류의 텍스트와 다양한 성악적 양식, 악기 구성의 분석을 통해, 이 작품이 자주 연주되지 못하는 한계에도 불구하고, 음악가로서 바흐 일생에서 매우 중요한 작품으로 이 작품이 지닌 음악적 가치와 의의를 고찰하였다. 《마태수난곡》은 기독교 성경에 기초하여 쓰여 졌으나, 여기에 머무르지 않고 종교와 지역과 국경을 넘어 지금까지도 많은 사람에게 깊은 감동을 주고 있다. 특별히 바흐의 사상과 음악성, 모든 기악 지식과 성악 기법을 쏟아부어 이룩한 필생의 역작으로, 수많은 음악학자로부터 바로크 시대의 최고의 걸작으로 꼽힌다. 이 연구를 위해 먼저 바흐의 가문과 종교에 대해 살펴본 후, 수난곡에 대한 전반적인 특징을 살펴보았다. 이후 바흐의 《마태수난곡》에 사용된 텍스트를 그 종류에 따라 분류하고 무엇보다도 텍스트로 쓰인 성경, 코랄, 피칸더의 자유시에 나타난 각각의 텍스트에 따른 음악적 특징 및 악기 구성을 고찰하였다. 마지막으로, 바흐의 특별한 악기 사용 및 음악적 특징을 분석함으로 성악과 기악이 독주와 반주의 역할에서 벗어나, 상호 간에 어떻게 관계 맺으며 곡을 전개해 나가는지 분석하였다. 이는 바흐가 기악에 대한 특별한 이해와 감각이 있음을 증명하고, 바흐의 작품에서 성악과 더불어 주도적인 역할을 하는 기악을 이해함으로써 바흐의 음악 경험이 이 작품을 통해 어떻게 완성되었는지를 확증하기 위함이다. 이 연구를 통해《마태수난곡》이 지닌 음악적 가치와 의의를 재정립해 보고 또한, 본 곡을 통한 기악의 쓰임과 역할을 살펴보았다. 한편,《마태수난곡》은 단순히 종교의 특정한 날을 위해 작곡된 종교 작품이라는 틀에서 한 걸음 더 나아가 바흐 가문, 시대적 상황에서 영향을 받은 종교에 대한 바흐의 인식, 다양한 작곡 활동을 통해 경험한 악기에 대한 방대한 지식 및 기악의 중요성이 총망라된 바흐의 최고 작품임을 고찰하였다. ;Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) composed more than a thousand works during his career as a musician, not only in the number but also in the genre and scale of the works. Since his musical works range from instrumental solos to choral works and from religious to secular works, he holds an important position in the history of music. Among them, the 《Matthew Passion》(Matthew Passion, BWV 244, 1727), composed by Bach during his time in Leipzig, can be seen as a work that is a condensation of the era and religious situation he belonged to, the influence of his family, and his own musical experience. Nevertheless, this work currently has situational limitations that prevent it from being performed frequently due to its massive scale, long performance time, and genre characteristics that are performed only at special times. Despite its limitations in performances, this paper tried to reveal that Bach's《Matthew Passion》is a very important and significant work in Bach's life as a musician. More specifically, this paper looked at the musical value and significance of this work through the analysis of the three types of texts, various vocal styles, and instrumental compositions used in it. The 《Matthew Passion》 was written from the Christian perspective based on the Bible, but it goes beyond Christianity through inspiring and influencing many people across religions and regions to this day. It is a masterpiece of Bach’s lifetime which reflects the essence of Bach's thoughts, musicality, instrumental knowledge, and vocal techniques. It is considered by many musicologists to be the greatest masterpiece of the Baroque era. For this study, the paper first looked into Bach's family and religion and then examined the overall characteristics of the Passion. Afterward, the texts used in Bach's 《Matthew Passion》were classified according to their types. Then, the musical characteristics and instrument composition of each text type of the Bible, chorale, and Picander's free verse were examined. Lastly, by analyzing Bach's special use of instruments and musical characteristics, this paper analyzed how vocal and instrumental music moves away from the role of soloist and accompaniment and relates to each other to progress the piece. Through this process, this paper revealed that Bach had a special understanding and sense of instrumental music, and summarized how Bach's musical experience was completed through this work by understanding instrumental music which plays a leading and important role along with vocal music in Bach's works. Through this study, the current paper re-established the musical value and significance of the 《Matthew Passion》and looked into the use and role of instrumental music in this work. The Matthew Passion goes beyond the framework of simply being a religious work composed for a specific religious day and reflects Bach's perception of religion influenced by the Bach family and the circumstances of the times, and the musical instruments he experienced through various compositional activities. The 《Matthew Passion》 was revealed to be Bach's best work, encompassing his extensive knowledge of music and the importance of instrumental music.
