Ola Gjeilo 의 합창곡 <Dark Night of the Soul>분석

Abstract

본 논문은 노르웨이 작곡가 올라 예일로(Ola Gjeilo, b. 1978)의 8성부 합창, 현악 사중주, 피아노를 위한 곡 <Dark Night of the Soul, 2010>을 분석한 것이다. 이 곡은 14분의 길이를 가진 긴 곡으로 스페인의 사제인 십자가의 성 요한(St. John of the Cross, 1542-1591)의 시를 이용하여 가사로 쓴 작품이다. 예일로는 미니멀한 음악을 추구하는 현대음악 작곡가이면서 교회선법, 음형, 변박, 전조 등의 여러 음악적 재료들을 복합적으로 사용하기도 한다. 필자는 이 작품 전반에 걸 쳐 특징적으로 표현되는 지속음과 오스티나토의 대조, 합창의 성부에 현악기를 더하거나 빼는 등의 주선율을 이용한 다양한 텍스처와 연주 기법적인 부분을 자세히 연구하고 구조의 분석에 집중하였다. 또한 예일로가 피아노 즉흥연주 (improvisation)를 허용한 마디에 필자가 제안하는 예시 악보를 실었는데, 이는 이 곡을 연주해야 하는 클래식 피아니스트들에게 특히 도움이 되리라 기대한다. <Dark Night of the Soul, 2011>의 구조는 두 측면에서 나누었다. 주제, 동기, 분위기 등 음악적인 대조를 중심으로, 또 예일로가 이 곡을 작곡 할 때에 사용한 십자가의 성 요한의 시를 중심으로 그 구조를 한 눈에 볼 수 있게 정리하였다. 구조 뿐 아니라 다각도로 이 합창곡을 연구하였는데, 예를 들어 긴 음가를 가진 주제를 분석할 때에는 음가축소의 방법을 사용해 좀더 주제를 빠르게 파악할 수 있도록 하였다. 또한 사용된 선법들은 물론 음악적인 전개를 명확히 하기위해, 필요한 부 분의 화성 분석도 더했다. 이 곡에서 사용된 주제와 동기들은 멜로디와 반주부를 오가며 변화하기도 하고 다른 섹션에서 다시 사용되기도 하는데, 어떻게 다양한 음악적 재료들이 곡 전체를 통일성 있게 관통하는지 각 동기들의 변화와 적용들 도 분석하였다. 마지막으로 본 논문에서는 캐릭터 노트(characteristic note) 등 재즈 화성학에 바탕을 둔 용어를 사용하였음을 일러둔다. 또한 이 논문을 통해 합창지휘자들이 이 곡을 지휘, 리허설, 연주함에 있어서 도움이 될 수 있는 방안을 제시하고자 한다.;The paper aims to analyze Ola Gjeilo's composition, Dark Night of the Soul, which was written in 2010 for soprano solo, eight-part chorus, string quartet, and piano. The composition seems complex and contains various musical themes, motives, and materials, making it challenging to understand its structure. Therefore, this paper's objective is to decode the structure and examine how each theme relates to one another. To analyze the structure, I consider two aspects: the musical elements and the text. The choral piece is based on a poem written by St. John of the Cross (1542-1591), but the musical sections do not always align with the poem's sections. Therefore, the paper examines the structure both in relation to the poem and the music itself. A key-related material like a use of church modes and key changes in Dark Night of the Soul are also examined. By employing Roman numeral analysis, the paper provides a theoretical framework for understanding the harmonic progression and how it relates to the composition's structure. This analysis helps uncover the underlying tonal or modal relationships and their impact on the overall musical experience. Furthermore, this study occasionally provides some analysis on this work from the perspective of jazz harmony. This approach allows for an exploration of Gjeilo's unique blend of classical and jazz elements, providing insights into the harmonic language and stylistic influences on its live performance. As an example, this paper presents a potential improvisation by including a transcribed passage played by the writer, myself. The inclusion of the transcribed improvised passage adds a practical dimension to the paper's analysis, serving classical pianists as a source of inspiration. Overall, this paper aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of Ola Gjeilo's Dark Night of the Soul by decoding its structure, examining the relationships between themes and motives, exploring various musical characteristics using different methods, and occasionally incorporating insights from jazz harmony. By doing so, it intends to offer valuable suggestions and insights for choral conductors who may be conducting this work, facilitating a deeper understanding and interpretation of the composition.
