마주한 환경세계

Abstract

본 논문은 다종을 어우르는 이 세상을 살아가는 인간이 비인간을 마주할 때 지나칠 수 있는 종의 차이로 인한 문제를 직면하고, 그 문제에 대한 적절한 응답 을 발견할 수 있는 능력을 기르기 위한 논고이다. 인간은 낯선 외부적 요소를 이해하려고 노력하지만 인간의 관점만으로는 파악할 수 없는 상황들이 포착된다. 연구자는 이에 의문을 갖게 되었으며 좁게는 개개인의 다름과 넓게는 종의 차이 로 인한 다름의 원인을 찾으면서, 어떠한 형태의 응답을 주고받아야 공생이 가능 한가에 대한 해답을 구하고자 하였다. 주체가 갖는 고유한 세계를 가리키는 개념인 ‘환경세계(Umwelt)’는 연구자 에게 비인간인 동물의 세계로 다가가는 길을 제시해주었다. 인간과 비인간은 각 자의 서로 다른 관점과 시각이 반영된 환경세계로 인해 동일한 대상을 상이하게 바라본다. 그 상이함을 이해함으로써 인간과 다른 비인간의 관점과 시각을 알 수 있으며, 더 나아가 그들과의 진정한 만남을 이룰 수 있다. 서로의 환경세계를 이 해하는 과정은 관계의 시작을 만들지만, 그 관계를 지속시키기 위해서는 접촉에 서 더 나아간 응답과 같은 움직임이 필요하다. ‘반려종(companion species)’은 이러한 움직임으로 인해 서로를 구성하며 얽힌 관계를 만드는 새로운 종의 개념 으로, 종을 횡단하며 다종을 어우를 수 있는 수많은 접촉지대를 만든다. 연구자 는 서로의 환경세계가 맞닿는 이 지대에서 연구자가 추구하던 비인간과의 관계의 형태를 발견할 수 있었으며, 세상을 인간의 관점으로만 바라보지 않는 접근을 통 해 다종과의 관계를 가꿀 수 있는 거름을 마련할 수 있었다. 예술은 예술가가 세상을 마주하면서 생겨난 접촉지대에서 관객의 대답을 기 다리며 물음표로 매듭짓는 응답이다. 연구자는 인간과 비인간의 관계가 만들어지 는 연결을 찾고자, 비인간과의 관계를 고찰한 여러 예술가들의 응답을 살펴보았다. 그들 역시 저마다의 환경세계를 가졌기에 응답 또한 제각각 달랐지만, 모두 관심과 존중을 바탕으로 삼아 성실한 그들만의 작업 방식을 갖고 있었다. 연구자 는 그들이 선택한 예술 매체에 대해 살핌으로써, 연구자의 작업 재료인 흙으로써 만들 수 있는 비인간 동물과의 연결 형태에 대해 고민하는 계기를 마련할 수 있었다. 연구자에게 흙은 서로의 세계가 맞닿는 지점에 위치하며 함께 고민하고 소 통할 수 있는 장소를 마련하는 매개체의 역할을 하는 물질이다. 본 연구를 통해 연구자는 인간으로서 이해하기 어려웠던 비인간에게 다가가는 방식과 그에 걸맞는 응답을 발견할 수 있었다. 나아가 연구자가 찾은 그 응답이 그들에게 적절한 것인지 분간할 수 있는 능력 또한 기를 수 있었다. 본고의 연구는 인간과 비인간뿐만 아니라 같은 종인 인간과 인간 사이에 존재하는 간극을 좁힐 수 있는 계기 또한 만들 수 있다고 생각한다. 세상은 인간의 눈을 통해 보는 세계뿐만 아니라 더 자세히 들여다보아야 알 수 있는 또다른 세계들과 함께 어울 러 구성되어 있다. 그 세계들이 모여 수많은 접촉지대를 만들고 그 지대를 마주 하는 우리는 그에 걸맞는 응답을 찾아야한다. 본 연구가 그 응답을 찾는 과정 속 길잡이가 되기를 기대하며 연구자는 비인간 동물과의 다음 만남을 고대하면서 그 들과의 응답을 위한 또 다른 준비를 하고자 한다.;The purpose of this study is to address the challenges that arise when humans encounter non-human species due to differences in perception caused by the diversity of species; it aims to cultivate the ability to find appropriate responses to these challenges. While humans strive to understand unfamiliar external elements, there are situations that cannot be fully comprehended from a human perspective alone. This has led the researcher to question the causes of differences, ranging from individual variations to species-level distinctions, and to seek answers on how to establish a symbiotic relationship through different forms of responses. The concept of "Umwelt," which refers to the unique world experienced by each individual, provides the researcher with a pathway to approach the world of non-human animals. Humans and non-human species perceive the same objects differently due to the environmental worlds shaped by their distinct perspectives and perceptions. By understanding these differences, one can grasp the perspectives and perceptions of non-human species and engage in genuine encounters with them. Understanding each other's Umwelt forms the foundation for a relationship, but it requires actions like responses, which go beyond mere contact, to sustain that relationship. "Companion species" is a concept that represents new interwoven relationships transcending species boundaries, creating numerous points of contact. The researcher discovered various forms of relationships with non-human species in these overlapping areas where their Umwelts meet, enabling an approach that goes beyond a human perspective and fosters connections with diverse species. Art emerges as a response from the points of contact where artists encounter the world, awaiting the audience's response and intertwining responses with question marks. To explore the connections that form relationships between humans and non-human species, the researcher examined the responses of various artists who contemplated their relationships with non-human species. These artists, each with their unique Umwelt, exhibited diverse responses based on their individual interests and respect, yet all embraced a sincere approach in their work. The examination of artistic mediums inspired the researcher to reflect on the possibilities of connections with non-human animals using soil as a material that creates a space for mutual contemplation and communication at the intersection of their worlds. This study enabled the researcher to discover approaches to engaging with non-human beings and appropriate responses that were previously difficult to comprehend as a human. Furthermore, the researcher developed the ability to discern the suitability of those responses. This study not only narrows the gap between humans and non-human species but also provides an opportunity to bridge the divide that exists between humans. The world is not only seen through human eyes but is composed of other worlds that can be understood only by delving deeper. It is imperative to find responses that fit the numerous points of contact created when these worlds come together. This study aspires to serve as a guide in the quest for such responses and prepares the researcher for future encounters with non-human animals, enabling new preparations for their responses.
