문학과의 관련성을 통해 본 에드윈 랜시어 경(Sir Edwin Landseer)의 개 회화

Abstract

This paper examines the contemporary interpretation of Sir Edwin Landseer(1802-1873)’s dog paintings in the context of its affinity with literature. While existing scholarships on Landseer’s dogs focused mainly on the iconography of dogs and its meanings, I aim to shed light on the aspect of reception of paintings by the contemporaries. By looking into the primary sources of the period, I argue that, although a visual work of art, nineteenth-century contemporaries read Landseer’s dog paintings in a literary sense. Therefore, this study, with an eye on the era when Landseer’s dog paintings were created and exhibited, focuses on why contemporaries’ of the period interpreted his dog paintings in relation to literature in multiple contexts- art criticism, literature, the relationship between Landseer and literary writers, title of the painting and Royal Academy catalogues- to consequently find art historical meaning in the phenomenon. Visual art and literature formed a close relationship in Victorian England. With this historical background, the contemporaries of the period continuously elucidated Landseer’s dog paintings in line with affinity between literature and painting. This correlation among the two art genres can be found in art criticism and literature of the period. While most art criticisms illustrate the scenes on canvas and the techniques of the artist, Landseer’s art criticism leans toward literary account. Though based on each dog paintings, Landseer’s criticism encompasses imagination of the critic and forms a new narrative within the work of criticism. Moreover, literary expressions of the contemporaries calling Landseer a poet, and his dog paintings poetry(or a poem) can be found continuously among the contemporary sources. Furthermore, Landseer’s dog paintings form a closer affinity to literature through literary works that re-present the paintings. Branwell Brontë wrote a poetry inspired by Landseer’s dog painting, and novelist Sarah Tytler published a story with its main characters derived from dogs from Landseer’s paintings. These literatures are significant because the very nature of these literary works represent the relationship between the two art genres. Therefore, Landseer’s dog paintings were a visual exemplar of art and literature’s affinity in 19th century Britain. However, not all animal painters and their works were considered in relation to literature at the time of Landseer’s art production. Multiple layers exist as to why especially Landseer’s dog paintings were considered in relation to literature. First, Landseer’s connection with literary figures of the period, such as Charles Dickens and Sir Walter Scott is notable. This connection between the artists not only existed on a personal note, but existed also on artistical level, such as collaborative works and interrelations among their works. With the rise of periodical’s popularity of the period, this proximity was inscribed and publicized. Also, the sentimental aspect of his paintings that differentiate his works from other dog paintings plays a role in contemporaries’ interpretation of his works in relation to literature. In addition, titles of Landseer’s dog paintings were very allegorical and metaphorical and thus were perceived as literary. Artist himself intentionally referred to literature in the Royal Academy catalogue listings of his works, by citing verses from poetry alongside the title of his works, and thereby strengthening the internal logic of the time concerning his dog paintings. I further aim to propose that Landseer’s dog paintings were in line with the function of the long history of ‘Ut pictura poesis’ and ‘sister arts’ played in 19th century Britain. The basis of this paper lies in the primary sources such as newspapers, periodicals and books that had not been introduced in Landseer studies, and the literary works dealt in this dissertation are sources that had not been thoroughly studied in the Landseer studies as well as in the field of English literature as well.;본 논문은 19세기 영국의 동물 화가 에드윈 랜시어 경(Sir Edwin Landseer, 1802-1873)의 개 회화에 대한 당대인들의 해석을 문학과의 친연성(affinity)이라는 문맥에서 조명한 연구이다. 랜시어의 개 회화는 미술 작품임에도 불구하고 빅토리아인들에 의해 문학이라는 예술 장르의 문법으로 해석되었다. 그러나 기존 랜시어의 개 회화 연구는 개라는 도상과 그 의미에 집중되어왔다. 따라서 본고는 작가의 작업이 전개되고 작품이 걸렸던 19세기 당대인들은 왜 랜시어의 개 회화에 대한 문학적인 해석을 하게 되었는지를 미술 비평, 문학, 랜시어와 문학가들과의 관계, 작품명과 카탈로그와 같은 다양한 문맥에서 고찰하고, 미술사적인 의미를 찾아내는 데 목적을 둔다. 빅토리아 시기 영국에서 미술과 문학은 밀접한 관계를 형성했다. 이러한 시대적 배경을 바탕으로 당대인들은 지속적으로 랜시어의 개 그림을 문학과의 친연성이라는 맥락 아래에서 해석한다. 이러한 사실은 이 시기 미술 비평과 문학에서 찾아볼 수 있는데, 일반적인 미술 비평의 기술 방식이 캔버스 화면 속 장면에 대한 설명과 화가의 화법과 기술에 대한 설명이 위주인 반면, 랜시어의 작품에 대한 미술 비평은 개 그림 속 장면에 근간을 두지만 작가의 상상력이 포함되어 새로운 서사(narrative)를 부여한 문학적인 방식으로 구현된다. 또, 당대인들은 랜시어라는 화가를 시인(poet)이라고 명명하거나, 랜시어의 개 그림을 시(poem, poetry)라는 문학 장르로 혼용하여 부르는 사실도 지속적으로 나타난다. 더 나아가, 랜시어의 개 그림은 실제 시와 소설이라는 문학 작품으로 형상화되기까지 한다. 브란웰 브론테는 랜시어의 개 그림을 시라는 인접 예술로 직접적으로 재현했다. 소설가 사라 티틀러는 랜시어의 개 회화들을 원작으로, 캔버스 화면 속 개를 소설 속 주인공 캐릭터로 상정하여 소설을 출간하기에 이른다. 이러한 문학 작품들은 미술이라는 1차 창작물을 기반으로 제작된 2차 창작물이라는 점에서 두 예술 장르의 조우를 의미한다. 이렇듯 랜시어의 개 회화들은 19세기 영국에서 미술과 문학이라는 두 장르간의 관련성을 시각적으로 보여주는 상징이라고 볼 수 있다. 그러나 랜시어와 동시대에 활동했던 모든 동물 화가들이 다 문학과의 관련성에서 이해되고 해석되지 않았다. 이러한 현상이 왜 랜시어라는 작가의 개 회화를 둘러싸고 일어났는지에 대한 이유는 다층적 맥락으로 존재한다. 먼저, 랜시어는 개라는 공통분모를 공유하는 문학가들과의 친분이 깊었다. 찰스 디킨스, 월터 스콧 경과 랜시어의 관계는 협업, 그리고 서로의 작품에 상호적 영향관계를 주고 받는 등 작가적 교류로까지 이어지며, 이러한 사실은 19세기 간행물의 인기에 힘입어 활자화되고 대중화된다. 또, 랜시어는 작품명을 문학적이고 서사적으로 지었으며, 로열 아카데미 전시 작품 카탈로그에 시 구절을 인용해놓음으로써 문학이라는 맥락에서 이해되던 자신의 작품에 대한 당대 내적 논리를 강화했다. 본 논문은 이러한 미시적 관점과 더불어, 거시적 관점에서 이러한 당대인들의 랜시어 개 회화 수용 양상은 ‘시를 그림처럼(Ut pictura poesis)’과 자매 예술(sister arts)의 오래된 예술의 전통이 19세기 영국에서도 작동하고 있었음을 암시한다. 본 논문은 기존 랜시어 연구에서 소개된 적 없는 간행물, 신문 기사, 단행본과 같은 1차 사료를 활용하여 논지를 강화하였으며, 본 연구에서 사용된 시와 소설의 경우 랜시어 연구는 물론 기존 영문학계에서도 깊이 있게 다뤄지지 않은 사료라는 점에서 의의를 찾을 수 있다.
