Rebecca Clarke의 Sonata for Viola and Piano에 관한 분석 연구

Abstract

The purpose of the study is to examine Rebecca Helferich Clarke (1886-1979) and her work <Sonata for Viola and Piano> so that we can play this work in depth. Despite being a male-dominated society between World War I and World War II, she was considered an important British female composer and violist. She presented her work <Sonata for Viola and Piano> anonymously at the Berkshire Chamber Music Festival Competition and won the highest score in the competition, tied with Ernest Bloch's work. This work consists of a total of three movements and consists of classical forms such as sonata form and rondo form. The use of the whole-tone scale and chromatic scale reveals the characteristics of the impressionistic music, and the use of the pentatonic scale forms a folk musical atmosphere. In addition, She showed her own music world by using various 20th-century music techniques, such as giving unity to works through circulation techniques. In addition to this work, Clarke composed a number of works that effectively expressed viola's characteristics. In this paper, Rebecca Clarke's life and musical characteristics were investigated, and the background of her work <Sonata for Viola and Piano> and the characteristics of each movement's format, harmony, melody, rhythm, and dynamic were analyzed.;본 논문은 레베카 헬퍼리히 클라크(Rebecca Helferich Clarke, 1886-1979)의 대표 작품인「비올라와 피아노를 위한 소나타 (Sonata for Viola and Piano, 1919) 」에 관한 분석 연구이다. 제 1차 세계대전과 제 2차 세계대전 사이는 남성 중심의 사회였고 여성 음악가들이 활동하는 것에 대해 제약이 많은 시기였다. 그럼에도 불구하고 당시 활발히 활동했던 레베카 클라크는 20세기의 중요한 여성 작곡가이자 비올라 연주자로 평가 받았다. 그녀는 왕립 음악 대학(Royal College of Music)의 교수인 스탠포드(Charles Villiers Stanford)의 제자가 되어 작곡을 배웠다. 이후 터티스(Lionel Tertis)에게 비올라를 사사하며 영국의 전문 오케스트라인 퀸즈 홀 오케스트라(Queen's Hall Orchestra)의 첫 여성 단원이 되었다. 또한 그녀는 버크셔 작곡 콩쿠르(Berkshire Chamber Music Festival Competition)에 익명으로 <Sonata for Viola and Piano>를 출품하여 블로흐(Ernest Bloch)와 공동으로 최고 점수를 받아 심사위원들과 청중들에게 호평을 받았다. 클라크는 비올라 연주자로서 비올라라는 악기의 특성을 잘 알고 있어서 그러한 악기에 대한 지식을 본인의 작품에 효과적으로 사용하고 표현했다. 본 논문에서는 레베카 클라크의 생애와 음악적 특징을 알아보고 그녀의 대표작인 <Sonata for Viola and Piano>의 배경을 살펴보고 작품을 분석 해보고자 한다.
