Abstract

This study is a thesis on the work of a researcher who examined modern changes of placelessness and recorded sense of the place with an attitude of topophilia. The researcher felt anxiety and emptiness as she experienced standardized and uniform changes in modern places, and thought that the an attitude of topophilia of viewing places as empirical and private would be an alternative to modern placelessness. To this end, the theory of placelessness by human geographer Edward Relph was explored, and the theoretical foundation of work was laid through the study of topophilia proposed by Chinese-American human geographer Yi-Fu Tuan. Placelessness refers to a phenomenon in which various place experiences and identities are weakened. In order to help understand placelessness, phenomenological geography focusing on the relationship between humans and places was explored, and the concept of place feeling and place identity was examined. Human geography, which belongs to phenomenological geography, focuses on the place as a "life-world (lebenswelt)" and views humans and places as interchangeable beings. However, modern places are being changed by the flow of placelessness, separated from humans and located as a means of development and development. This placelessness does not give people an in-depth place experience due to uniform changes that prioritize efficiency. Recognizing this problem, the researcher was able to recognize in what form modern placelessness exists around us by analyzing the expression form of placelessness through Relph's study. Topophilia refers to the emotional bond that humans feel in places. In Tuan's study, topophilia appears in various ways depending on the way humans perceive places, which serves as a basis for understanding individual's sense of place. In addition, understanding this sense of place can draw attention to social phenomena related to the environment and place. The researcher looked at the works of Choi Chan-sook and Kim Joon, writers who looked at the place with an attitude of topophilia. Choi Chan-sook's media work, which deals with the issues of migration and settlement, contains residents' attachment to a specific place and interest in its political background. In addition, through Kim Joon's work using Soundscape, it was possible to see how the artist's unique sense of place was conveyed to the audience through art work. Based on the above study, the researcher paid attention to places with personal feelings and memories from the perspective of Topophilia and recorded the place in the form of a vessel. Based on previous studies linking places and vessel, the similarity between places and vessel was confirmed, understood as a body with a skin called glaze, and attempted to expand to places-vessel-body. In addition, the relationship between the body and the place was noted by paying attention to the changes occurring in the firing process of ceramic work. To express this, in some works, glaze studies using chromium oxide (Cr2O3) and tin oxide (SnO2) were conducted together and applied to works. Furthermore, not only subjective and personal experiences and memories, but also data such as digital image maps, which are objective indicators, were used together to record the place in the researcher's own way. Since visual materials such as data and drawings do not have temporal and spatial limitations, they provided various visual information about the place to researchers and were also used as an aid to memory. Through this study, the researcher was able to understand the place in more depth. In addition, the researcher found that it is important to restore an individual's experience of place even within the changes of modern uniform places, and that a new sense of place can be felt by carefully examining the surroundings. Depending on the researcher, this study is a process of finding a place to be mindful, and it is meaningful to suggest the direction of moving toward a settled life rather than a rooted life in modern times.;본 연구는 현대의 무장소적(placelessness)인 변화에 대해 고찰하고 토포필리아(topophilia) 적 태도로 장소를 감각하여 기록한 연구자의 작업에 대한 논고이다. 연구자는 표준화되고 일률적인 현대의 장소 변화를 경험하며 불안감과 공허함을 느꼈으며, 장소를 경험적이고 사적인 곳으로 바라보는 토포필리아적 태도가 현대의 무장소성에 대한 대안이 될 것이라고 생각했다. 이에 인문지리학자 에드워드 렐프(Edward Relph)의 무장소성 이론에 대해 알아보았고, 중국계 미국의 인문지리학자 이 푸 투안(Yi-Fu Tuan)이 제시한 토포필리아 연구를 통해 작업의 이론적 기틀을 마련할 수 있었다. 무장소성은 다양한 장소 경험과 정체성이 약화되는 현상을 의미한다. 무장소성에 대한 이해를 돕기 위해 연구자는 인간과 장소의 관계를 주목한 현상학적 지리학을 살펴보며 장소감과 장소 정체성의 개념을 살펴보았다. 현상학적 지리학에 속하는 인문지리학에서는‘생활 세계’로서의 장소에 주목하며 인간과 장소를 상호 교환적인 존재로 바라본다. 하지만 현대의 장소는 인간과 분리되어 발전과 개발의 수단으로 위치되는, 무장소적 흐름에 의해 변화되고 있다. 이러한 무장소성은 효율성을 우선시하는 획일화된 변화로 인해 사람들에게 깊이 있는 장소 경험을 주지 못한다. 이와 같은 문제점을 인식하고 연구자는 렐프의 연구를 통해 무장소성의 표출 형태를 분석함으로써 현대의 무장소성이 어떠한 형태로 우리의 주변에 존재하는지 인지할 수 있었다. 토포필리아는 인간이 장소에 느끼는 정서적 유대를 뜻한다. 투안의 연구에서 토포필리아는 인간이 장소를 지각하는 방식에 따라 다양하게 나타나며, 이는 개개인의 장소감을 이해할 수 있는 기틀이 된다. 또한 이러한 장소감에 대한 이해는 환경과 장소와 관련된 사회적 현상에 관심을 이끌어 낼 수 있다. 연구자는 토포필리아적 태도로 장소를 바라보는 작가인 최찬숙과 김준의 작품을 살펴보았다. 이주와 정주에 대한 이슈를 다룬 최찬숙의 미디어 작품은 특정 장소에 대한 거주민의 애착과 그 정치적 배경에 대한 관심을 담고 있다. 또한 김준의 사운드 스케이프를 활용한 작품을 통하여 작가의 독특한 장소감이 예술 작업을 통해 어떻게 관객에게 전달되는지 알 수 있었다. 위의 연구를 바탕으로 연구자는 토포필리아의 관점으로 사적인 감정과 기억을 가진 장소에 주목하고 장소를 기(器)의 형태로 기록하였다. 장소와 기를 연결 짓는 선행 연구를 바탕으로 장소와 기의 유사성을 확인하고, 유약이라는 피부를 가진 신체로 기를 이해하며 장소-기-신체까지의 확장을 시도하였다. 또한 도자 작업의 소성 과정에서 일어나는 변화에 주목하여 신체와 장소의 관계에 주목하였다. 이를 표현하기 위해서 몇몇 작업에서는 산화크롬과 산화주석을 이용한 유약 연구를 함께 진행하여 작품에 적용시켰다. 나아가 연구자는 주관적이고 개인적인 경험, 기억과 더불어 객관적인 지표인 디지털 영상 지도와 같은 데이터를 함께 사용해 장소를 연구자만의 방식으로 기록하였다. 데이터와 도면과 같은 시각 자료는 시간적, 공간적 한계를 가지지 않기 때문에 연구자에게 장소에 대한 다양한 시각 정보를 제공해 주었으며 또한 기억을 보조해주는 역할로 활용되었다. 연구자는 본 연구를 통해 장소를 더 깊이 있게 이해할 수 있었다. 또한 현대의 획일화된 장소 변화 안에서도 개개인의 장소 경험을 회복하는 것이 중요하며, 주변을 주의 깊게 살핌으로써 새로운 장소감을 감각할 수 있다는 것을 알 수 있었다. 연구자에게 작업은 이러한 추상적인 감각을 점토를 통해 구현하며 다시금 확인하고 기록하는 것이다. 따라서 본 연구는 마음 둘 수 있는 장소를 찾아가는 과정임과 동시에 현대에서 뿌리 뽑힌 삶이 아닌 정주하는 삶으로 나아가는 방향성을 제시함에 의의가 있다.
