Abstract
The purpose of the study is to investigate the status and cognition of secondary school music teachers regarding their multicultural music education. A survey was conducted on middle and secondary school music teachers across the country, and a total of 102 collected data from the survey was used for this study. A frequency analysis of the collected data was conducted based on the research question. The results of this study are summarized as follows. First, as a result of the survey on the status of multicultural music education, it was found that the teachers used traditional music genres and music from Asian cultures most frequently, other than textbooks, they used materials based on the video/Internet the most as study materials. Second, as a result of a survey on the status of multicultural music education, teachers were found to have conducted an average of one to three multicultural classes per semester, in which the main activity was introducing the background or culture of other countries. As a reason for the activity, most respondents claimed that singing can foster diverse musical experiences through lyrics and the attitude of understanding, respecting, and appreciation for diversity in instrumental music and its creation. Also, it can be observed that the difficulties experienced during classes appeared in a variety of areas, such as in terms of musical, administrative, and material aspects. Third, as a result of the survey on the recognition of multicultural music education, most of them responded that multicultural music education is necessary. Also, the opinions are divided on the suitability of multicultural music education and the satisfaction of its content in textbooks. Finally, as a way to improve multicultural music classes, teachers answered that it is most necessary to expand various high-quality educational materials on multicultural music. Fourth, in regard to conducting a survey on the status of multicultural music education, the reason was found to be that the teachers were most active in introducing music-related cultures in all areas, and that they intended for classes to understand the diversity of music along with having the opportunities for new musical experiences. However, it was suggested that it is necessary to plan and practice further multi-dimensional and complex activities as multicultural music education deals with the relationship between music, society, and culture in depth. Fifth, as a result of a survey on the status of multicultural music education, teachers answered that regarding the field of teaching singing, they experienced difficulties when they were unable to convey the unique feeling of music due to the lack of information on characteristics of vocalization or singing methods in classes. This is because breathing and vocalization are presented mainly only within Western classical music in textbooks and related studies, and explanations of vocalization and singing methods of other countries need to be included in textbooks, and related materials and training should also be expanded. Sixth, as a result of the survey on the perception of multicultural music education, as for reasons for the need for multicultural music education, most teachers responded with the answers “to emphasize the cultural community capabilities of the Ministry of Education" and “to help in understanding and accepting the traditional Korean music.” It was considered that the definition of multicultural music education was different according to each scholar, and that the teachers' perceptions of meaning and necessity also differed. Therefore, it was suggested that an agreement of related experts on the meaning and the goal of multicultural music education in Korea is necessary. Seventh, as a result of the survey on the perception of multicultural music education, more than half of the teachers responded that the field suitability of multicultural music education was appropriate. These results can be seen to have increased awareness of suitability compared to previous studies, which have been influenced by the Ministry of Education's education policy related to multicultural education. However, since these policies are presented within a comprehensive category for multicultural students, the necessity of educational support tailored to the characteristics of music subjects for all students was suggested. Based on these results, this study suggested the need for follow-up research that supplemented the problems of the study. This study is meaningful in presenting educational directions for multicultural music education in the future. Additionally, this study aims to help develop various programs to understand and practice the value of multicultural music education in the future.;본 연구의 목적은 다문화 음악교육에 대한 현직 중등 음악 교사의 실태 및 인식을 알아보는 것에 있다.
