Abstract
This study aimed to observe the experiences of an early-career elementary school teacher who had experienced work stress during an art therapy program for resilience and their implications. For this, in order to closely examine the meanings of the participant’s experiences, a qualitative case study method was used to understand and explore diverse context of the study participant. The study participant is an early-career elementary school teacher who had been working at the same school since the beginning of their career. The case study involved a total of 12 art therapy sessions, once a week for 90 minutes, from July 7, 2022 to September 29, 2022. Based on the information collected about the study participant prior to the art therapy through in-depth one-on-one interviews, an art therapy program for the resilience of early-career elementary school teachers was designed. The objectives of the program included expression and relieving of negative stress emotions, self-acceptance and understanding, positive school experience as a teacher, exploration of internal resources, recovery of purpose awareness, and exploration and inspiration of future positive image as a teacher. In order to identify the participant’s art therapy experiences and their meanings, the researcher conducted a total of two additional interviews with a one month interval, on October 6 and November 10. After obtaining the written consent from the study participant, data collection consisted of sitting sessions prior to art therapy, recordings over three sessions, work images, observation logs, journals, and reviews by the study participant. For data analysis, repetitive comparison analysis, a commonly used qualitative study method, was used to closely review the transcribed original data and the study participant’s journals and reviews. Through the process of open coding, categorization, and category identification, meaningful verbal and nonverbal expressions were analyzed and compared to extract the study participant’s art therapy experiences and the meanings of those experiences for their resilience. Data analysis yielded a total of six upper topics and 18 sub-topics. The upper topics of the art therapy case experiences were , , , , , . Based on the study results, there are four main conclusions on the meanings of the experiences that the early-career elementary school teacher had for resilience during their art therapy. First, the study participant re-recognized the negative emotions related to the work stress they felt in previous classes through art therapy and clarified it visually, thereby expressing oppressed emotions and relieving the unresolved feelings of stress. Second, the study participant experienced a proper sense of trust indirectly through forming a supporting relationship with the researcher through positive interaction. By applying this in actual practice, the participant was able to establish ideal interpersonal relations with school members. Third, the study participant converted pessimistic thinking into a positive outlook through image work, allowing them to explore and internalize the strength of observing problematic situations at school in a flexible manner and responding to them smoothly. Finally, the study participant restored their confidence as a teacher, observed the sense of purpose in their occupation, and visualized their meanings, thereby establishing a foundation for forming a positive image of themselves as a teacher going forwards. To sum up, the study participant was able to express and relieve the pain they had experienced from past stressful events through art therapy for resilience. In the process, the supporting relations they established with the researcher allowed them to form a strong sense of trust, thereby leading them to experience recovery of relationships with actual school members. Further, the participant internalized their strength by converting pessimistic thinking into flexible thinking, and they explored the sense of purpose in their occupation, thereby establishing a rightful image of themselves as a teacher. Through this, the early career elementary school teacher overcame and put a positive light on their work stress, thereby gaining courage and confidence that they can overcome future adversity and stressful situations as a teacher existing “here and now.” They recovered their sense of calling as a teacher and explored the meaning of their existence on a deeper level, thereby achieving positive images of themselves as a teacher in the future.
