Abstract
The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of money management skill and financial damage prevention skill by providing economic education to prevent financial damage to youth with developmental disabilities in adulthood. Participants in this study were 24 youth with developmental disabilities aged 19 to 30 attending ‘A’ Language learning development center located in Seoul and participating in a self-help group. Among them, a total of 8 small group meetings and 4 online Individual activities were conducted on 12 participants of an experimental group. The economic education program consists of two parts: money management skill and financial damage prevention skill. Money management skill was carried out for one to five sessions, and the sub area consists of five parts: recognition of financial status, allowance management, planned spending, understanding of the value of money and Dutch treat. Financial damage prevention skill was carried out for six to eight sessions, and the sub area consists of four parts: personal information damage, voice phishing, smishing damage, app payment damage. The economic education program consists of small group meetings and online individual activities, and the small group meetings were conducted in two sessions at a time every other week (8 sessions in total) and the online individual activities were conducted in the week when there was no small group meeting. For online individual activities, missions related to topics were provided every two sessions so that the participants could fully understand and maintain what they learned. This program was conducted at J café, which the participants often use as a self-help meeting place for 50 minutes per session. After the first session, there was 10 minutes rest break, and then the next session continued. After the second session, the participants were informed of introduction of the next session, contents of missions and how to submit it. In the week without session, missions were submitted by Saturday, and feedback was provided individually until 8pm on Sunday, the day after submission. After the program, two independent sample t-tests were conducted on the degree of pre-and post-change of the experimental group and the control group in order to examine how the economic education program for preventing financial damage affects the money management skill and the financial damage prevention skill of youth with developmental disabilities. The results are as follows. First, there was a statistically significant difference between pre- and post-test change in money management skill of the experimental group and the control group participating in economic education program. By sub area of money management skill, the experimental group’s pre-and post-score in recognition of financial status, allowance management, understanding of the value of money, Dutch treat showed a statistically significant difference, but no significant difference in planned spending. Accordingly, this study indicated that the economic education had a positive effect on recognition of financial status, allowance management, understanding of the value of money and Dutch treat among the sub area of money management skill. Second, there was a statistically significant difference between the pre and post-test changes in the financial damage prevention skill of the experimental group and the control group participating in the economic education program. By sub-area of financial damage prevention skill, the experimental group’s pre-and post-score was statistically more significant than that of the control group in personal information damage, voice phishing and smishing damage, and app payment damage. This study indicated that the economic education program to prevent financial damage had a positive effect on the financial management skill and financial damage prevention skill of youth with developmental disabilities. The significance of the study was to provide not only money management skills to distinguish money and purchase goods, which were dealt with in previous study, but also to understand financial status and the qualitative value of money, and to make rational decisions on various economic issues to prevent financial damage for a youth with developmental disabilities. In addition, the program was composed by reflecting the actual skills needed for youth with developmental disabilities in adulthood through literature, the interview with experts and the interview and survey with a youth with developmental disabilities, and using a systematic pedagogy suitable for a youth with developmental disabilities, they can obtain and retain a new skill with a great ease, and therefore it is found meaningful that economic education in a relatively short period had a positive effect on money management skill and financial damage prevention skill.
