Abstract
This study discussed sports shoes worn in South Korea between the 1900s and 1945 when Western sports were introduced in earnest after the port opening of Korea. This study would examine the time and process of the entry of sports shoes into Korea and investigate the characteristics and patterns of changes in sports shoes by period. This study referred to articles and advertisements of photo materials of the time, Dong-A Ilbo and Chosun Ilbo. The contents of this study are as follows. Sports shoes were invented for the first time in the West presumably in the mid-19th century. At the time, various sports were developed as the wealthy class and leisure activities emerged, the shoes used in croquet and lawn tennis seem to be the beginning of sports shoes. Shoes for croquet were in a rubber overshoe shape in the early period, and it seems that they were developed into the shapes of modern sports shoes. Western sports were also introduced in Korea as Western culture came in with the opening of its ports in 1876. It is assumed that as for the beginning of sports shoes in Korea, they were worn in soccer and baseball games, and later, sports shoes were developed. As materials of sports shoes in Korea, leather, rubber, and fabric, etc. were used. The types of sports shoes can be broadly classified into general sports shoes worn in daily activities other than games and professional sports shoes worn in limited situations like professional matches. To examine the sports shoes worn in Korea by period, until the 1910s, only very few players wore imported sports shoes, and the imported sports shoes do not seem professional shoes for each event. Most wore traditional shoes like Jip-sin(straw shoes). Later, since the 1920s, sports shoes were worn in earnest, as they were gradually known to the public. sports shoes were manufactured in Korea as well, which took various forms. As sports shoes were worn in daily life other than sports, they were developed at a fast speed. Most professional sports shoes were similar to Western sports shoes, which were advertised in various forms. In the 20s, people’s interest in sports and the development of professional sports seem to have greatly affected the development of sports shoes. During the period, the differentiation between general sports shoes and professional sports shoes became clearer and both shoes were significantly developed. The flow of changes in sports shoes in the 1930s-1940s is changed because of a war basis in the 1930s. From 1930 through 1936, the wearers of sports shoes other than players were mostly students. In the 30s, as new shoe styles appeared, women’s interest in shoes was concentrated on dress shoes. On the other hand, as some schools designated black sports shoes and white sports shoes as their school shoes, more students came to wear sports shoes. Compared to the 1920s, the wearers or shapes of the sports shoes were relatively standardized. Since 1937, due to the wartime regime, the use of rubber and leather was restricted, and accordingly, there was a great impact on the production and wearing of sports shoes. Gradually, wearing sports shoes was discontinued, and Jip-sin(straw shoes), and geta(Japanese wooden slippers) replaced them, or barefoot was recommended. As this situation continued, in 1940, a solution to the supply of sports shoes was presented as well. People, mostly students, resolved the problem of the supply of sports shoes little by little, but it is assumed that sports shoes were not developed as much as in the early/mid-20s and-30s. Like this, sports shoes that were developed rapidly in the 1920s were standardized in the wearers or forms since the 1930s, and in the late-30s, that slowed down due to the social situation. It is assumed that this situation would not be greatly changed until 1945. And yet, the changes in sports shoes between 1920 and 1945 would greatly affect the development of Korean sports shoes. That, along with the appearance of domestic brands in the 1950s, provided the foundation that allowed developments, like the production of domestic sports shoes. Like this, this study has significance in that it provided an opportunity to sort out the theoretical system of early sports shoes and examine sports shoes in Korea by discussing the contents of early sports shoes in Korea. Hopefully, this study will be helpful for future studies of modern sports shoes.
