사라지는 세계, 이상화된 풍경

Abstract

본 논문은 인간의 유한성과 영원성에의 추구 양상을 중심으로 본인의 작업을 분석함으로써 회화의 의미를 고찰하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 인간의 본질을 탐구하는 데 있어 유한성의 문제는 핵심적이다. 이는 인간의 ‘영원성’에의 추구와도 깊은 관련이 있다. 본인은 세상의 불완전함을, 곧 무너져 내릴 듯 흘러내리는 풍경으로 표현한다. 이를 본인 회화의 특징으로 삼고 ‘흐르는 숲’으로 이름 붙였다. 본인이 세계의 유한성에 주목하는 데에는, 유년기부터 신장 질환을 앓으며 죽음에 대해 보다 가까이서 사유하게 된 경험이 바탕에 있다. 이는 비단 개인적인 관심사에 그치지 않는다. 오늘날 인류가 처한 팬데믹, 기후 위기, 전쟁 등 불안정한 상황은 우리가 안정적으로 미래를 사유하기 어렵게 만든다. 즉, 인간 유한성은 오래된 주제이자 오늘날에 이르러 더욱 중요하게 다루어지는 문제인 것이다. 유한성에 대한 감각은 영원성의 추구로 이어진다. Ⅱ장 ‘사라지는 세계’에서는 이러한 사유가 본인의 학부 시기 작업 〈Eden〉과 이후 작업인 〈흐르는 숲〉연작을 중심으로 본인의 작업에서 유한성이라는 주제가 다루어지는 방식과 그 변화 양상을 살펴보았다. 또한, Ⅲ장 ‘재창조된 자연’에서는 회화를 소통의 매체로 이해하고, 본인 작품에서 반복적으로 나타나는 죽은 나무와 버드나무를 중심으로 상징성을 살펴본다. 이러한 이미지가 죽음이 생명으로 탈바꿈하는 순간에 대한 깨달음의 반영이며, 작업을 통해서 자연의 순리에 대한 불신을 해결하는 재창조임을 밝혔다. 마지막으로 Ⅳ장 ‘이상화된 풍경’에서는 불안정한 세상이 회화에서 이상화된 풍경으로 나타남을 밝힌다. 현실 세계의 재현이 아닌 상상 속의 이상적 자연을 형상화하는 낭만주의를 비롯한 초월적인 풍경화들을 살펴본다. 이를 통해 유한성에 대한 본인의 인식이 작품을 통해 실재와는 다른 관념적인 풍경으로 나타난 배경을 이해한다. 이는 현실적 한계를 넘어설 수 있는, 회화가 지닌 무한한 가능성이다. 이상의 과정을 통해 본 논문은 인간의 불완전성에 저항하는 창조 행위로서의 회화의 가능성을 살펴보았다. 회화에서 흘러내리는 방식은 계산되지 않은 잠재성을 끌어낼 수 있는 장치이다. 이것은 인간적인 창조이며, ‘허술한’ 창조이다. 이는 회화라는 가장 인간적인 행위를 통해서 가능한 창조이다. 인간이 각자의 방식으로 행하는 영원성을 향한 시도는 좌절로 끝맺어지지 않을 것이다. 이상의 연구 과정은 본인 작업의 ‘흐르는 숲’이 단지 종말론적 이미지가 아닌 무수한 생명을 잠재한 영원한 가능성에 대한 이야기인 것을 밝히고 있다.;This paper aims to research the meaning of painting by analyzing my own work, particularly dealing with the finity and the search for an eternity of human beings. In terms of investigating the human essence, the issue of human finity is at the core. It is also related to the search for eternity. I turn the world's incompleteness into a scenery about to fall and flow down. This feature led me to name my work 'the forest flowing.' Coping with kidney disease from a young age, I could think and look at the death very closely which led me to focus on the finity of the world. It's not just a matter of personal interest. Instabilities such as pandemics, climate crisis, war, and so on today's humanity is facing, are making a picture of our stable future at risk. Human finity is not just a classic theme but also becoming more and more important nowadays. This sense of finity takes us in a pursuit of eternity. Chapter II 'Disappearing world' depicts how my works are changing and revolving around the very concept of human finity, especially the early work 'Eden' and recent work 'The Forest Flowing.' Chapter III 'A Nature Recreated' reveals a symbolic meaning of recurring elements like dead trees and bud trees, understanding a painting as a media of communication. Also, this chapter shows how these elements reflect a reckoning of a moment where death transforms into life and a belief in the law of nature gets stronger. The final chapter 'Idealized Scenery' makes clear how the instability of the world is shown through the idealized scenery in the painting. The final chapter looks through transcendental landscape paintings including romanticist paintings that shaped an imaginary form of the idealized nature instead of a representation of the real world, and understands the image of forests that my works frequently use as ideal forests, not as real forests. It shows the infinite possibility of a painting that goes beyond the limit of reality. Following the process as seen above, this paper sees the painting as creative activity resisting human incompleteness. The way images melt and float down in my work is a device by which an unpredicted potentiality of painting can be maximized. It is a 'poor' creation as well as a human creation, available due to the most human activity which is a painting. Each human being's way of pursuing eternity will not end up with just frustration. My work 'The Forest Flowing' is not limited to an apocalyptic image, but a story about the infinite potentiality obtaining the endless power of life.
