Dominick Argento의 ⟪Songs about Spring⟫ 분석 연구

Abstract

본 논문은 도미니크 아르젠토(Dominick Argento, 1927-2019)의 연가곡 《Songs about Spring(봄의 노래들)》에 관한 연구이다. 아르젠토는 20세기 미국의 작곡가이자 교육자이며 퓰리처상(Pulitzer Prize)을 비롯한 많은 수상을 통해 음악성을 인정받았다. 아르젠토는 20세기에 성행했던 모든 장르의 음악을 작곡했지만 특히 성악에 큰 애정을 드러내며 성악 음악 작곡에 두각을 나타내었다. 커밍스(e.e.cummings, 1894-1962)는 다방면의 실험을 시도한 특이한 시인으로 전통적인 문법 체계를 무너트리고 표기법을 변화시키는 것 등으로 시 안에서 시각적인 효과를 극대화하였다. 그의 실험적 시도는 평론가들의 비판을 받기도 하였으나 커밍스는 현대시에서 대단히 중요한 시인으로 평가받는다. 《Songs about Spring》은 아르젠토가 커밍스의 시에 곡을 붙인 연가곡이다. 본 연구에서는 먼저 문헌 조사를 통해 작곡가와 시인에 대한 이론적 배경을 알아보았다. 이후 각 곡을 시와 음악과의 관계성에 중점을 두고 분석함으로써 아르젠토가 독특한 커밍스의 시를 음악으로 어떻게 표현하고자 하였는지 연구하였다. 그 결과, 아르젠토가 음악과 시의 유기적인 결합을 이루기 위해 커밍스만의 독특한 시의 형식을 음악의 형식으로 최대한 반영하였음을 발견하였다. 또한 가사그리기 기법을 통해 시에 나타나는 시각적인 효과를 표현하면서 피아노를 한 가지 역할에 국한시키지 않고 다양한 음악적 양식과 함께 다양한 역할을 부여함으로써 시를 표현하는 중요한 수단으로 사용하고 있다. 이러한 특징들로 하여금 아르젠토는 미국의 작곡가로서 커밍스의 시와 더불어 미국적인 음악 양식을 확립하였고 더 나아가 자칫 난해할 수 있는 커밍스의 시에 대한 이해와 접근성을 높이며 시와 음악의 유기적인 결합을 이루어내고 있다.;This thesis is a study on the song cycle ⟪Songs about Spring⟫ by Dominick Argento (1927-2019). The purpose of the study is to examine the connection between Argento’s musical features and e.e.cunmmings’ (1894-1962) poems by analyzing ⟪Songs about Spring⟫. Argento was an American representative song composer and educator of the 20th century. His musicality was recognized through numerous awards including the Pulitzer Prize. Argento composed all prevalent musical genres of the 20th century but he was especially passionate about vocal music, thus composing many songs. e.e. cummings was one of the most innovative poets who experimented to try to maximize the visual effect by typographical disarrangement and uncomplying the traditional grammar. For this reason, he received criticism from critics but nowadays he is regarded as one of the most important poets in modern poetry. ⟪Songs about Spring⟫ is Argento's first song cycle composed while he was an undergraduate student, setting songs to five poems of cummings about spring. In this study, the theoretical background of the composer and poet was analyzed in detail through review of literature. After discussing the contents of the poem, each song is analyzed by focusing on the relationship between poetry and music, and how Argento tried to express cummings' unique poetry through music. This study thus concludes that Argento reflected cummings’ unique form of poetry into the form of music in order to achieve an organic combination of music and poetry. In addition, he expressed visual effect of the poem in music through text painting and used the piano as an important means of expressing poetry by assigning various roles along with various musical styles, not limited to one role. With these features, Argento established his own American style of music as an American composer along with cummings’s poetry. Furthermore, he enhanced understanding and accessibility about cummings’ poetry and achieved an harmony between poetry and music.
