Abstract
This thesis examines the possibility of a new theory of tragedy in the 21st century. George Steiner’s essentialist understanding of tragedy argues the classic genre cannot correspond to the modern world view. Meanwhile, Raymond Williams’ historicism states any form of tragedy is possible. However, these lack synchrony and diachrony, respectively. Critically deconstructing both, Terry Eagleton holds onto the concept of pharmakos, referring to scapegoat, as the essence of tragedy transcending time and place. In the mean time, shedding light on who the pharmakos are in an era makes the genre historical. Based on this theoretical frame, this thesis focuses on the class of precariat, a rapidly increasing group of lower class of this era and regards them as the new pharmakos to establish a theory of tragedy in the contemporary context, contending the prevalent perception of “death of tragedy” in the modern world. Annie Baker’s The Aliens (2010), Young Jean Lee’s Straight White Men (2014), and Lynn Nottage’s Sweat (2015) highlight ordinary characters falling into the precariat class and becoming tragic heroes/victims regardless of race, age, gender, and sexuality. Dealing with the sufferers, all three plays aestheticize a new poetics of tragedy by undoing, repeating, and parodying the established set of aesthetics of classic tragedy. These plays incorporate the negative aesthetics of drama genre, specifically silence, “inoperativity,” and action of waiting, respectively, embodying both the ontology and politics of pharmakos’ passive existence. In the context of recent crises in global history, from the 9/11 terrorist attacks, the financial crisis of 2008, to the present pandemic, the common aesthetics of the three drama meets the demand of current times, which seeks an ethical discourse on the Other, following the arguments and thoughts of Emmanuel Levinas, Giorgio Agamben, and Judith Butler. Namely, the three plays depicting precariat figures as pharmakos share a negative aesthetics of drama, however, still in the form of drama, and this makes historical aesthetics of tragedy possible by configuring pharmakos diachronically and the ethics of the Other synchronically.;본 연구는 21세기 초 동시대 비극론의 가능성을 고찰한다.
