Abstract
This thesis mainly presents research interest and study on organic photonic devices; include photovoltaics/solar cells (OPVs/OSCs) and photodetectors/photodiodes (OPDs) with implementation of Fabry-Perot Optical Filters (OFs) as electrode to enhance their abilities. In section A: chapter 1, a general introduction of OFs and organic photonic devices is given, which specially introduces the basic operation mechanism and their characterizations. In section B; chapter 2 and 3, we deeply discussed the function of OFs in OPVs field. Colorful, semitransparent OPVs are increasing in demand due to their applicability in aesthetically-fashioned power-generating windows. The traditional method of generating different colors in OPVs has been through implementing different active materials exhibiting distinct absorption spectra. This can complicate fabrication processes for production and cause deviations in device performance among OPVs of different colors. Thus in chapter 2, we demonstrate semitransparent and colorful OPVs (C-OPVs) with a single broadband absorbing active material of fixed thickness using electron beam (e-beam) processed Ag-TiOx-Ag OFs. The OFs enables the OPV to transmit spectrally pure colors with peak transmission efficiencies more than 25%, and allows the colors to be freely tuned without disturbing the charge transport properties such that the device parameters stay consistent. The OFs not only functions as an effective electrode but as a mirror for light outside of the spectral transparency window. We show that when compared to a same photoactive layer materials and thickness transparent OPV, C-OPVs generate 32.5(±2.91) ~ 34.5(±1.78)% more short circuit current. Such results point to a simple and convenient solution to achieving spectrally pure colors, moderate transmission efficiencies, decoupled optical and charge transport properties, and enhanced charge generation relative to a transparent OPV in semitransparent, colorful power-generating windows. However, OFs integration imposed limitations on the range of usable active materials because of damage caused by vacuum deposition techniques of OFs component. To be of practical use the solar cell must undergo scalable and non-invasive fabrication processes. To this end, in chapter 3 we present the fabrication of C-OPVs comprising solution-processed TiO2 as the dielectric component. The non-invasive processing substantially expands the range of usable active materials and allows the device to display a full range of spectrally pure and vibrant colors that are independent of the inherent color of the active material. Furthermore, the devices display superior optical and photovoltaic performances compared to those made from vacuum deposition techniques. These results underscore the efficient division of sunlight use between aesthetic and power generating functions via filtered and unfiltered light, respectively with the C-OPVs. In section C; chapter 4 and 5, we broaden the application of OFs in OPDs field. Low dark current and high photocurrent are both essential for OPDs to achieve high detectivity and OPDs with wavelength-selective light detection is crucial for many application including imaging and machine vision. In chapter 4, we studied the fundamental of OPDs process by applied two techniques to reduce dark current. Currently, most OPDs utilize a bulk heterojunction (BHJ) photoactive layer that is prepared by the one-step deposition of a donor and acceptor blend solution. However, the BHJ structure is the main cause of high dark current in solution processed OPDs. It is revealed that the detectivity and spectral responsivity of the OPDs can be improved by several methods. One of it is by utilizing a photoactive layer consisting of an interdiffused donor/acceptor bilayer (ID-BL). ID-BL is prepared by the sequential solution deposition (SqD) of donor and acceptor solutions with different thickness of donor materials. The ID-BL OPDs is found to prevent undesirable electron injection from the hole-collecting electrode to the ID-BL photoactive layer resulting in a reduced dark current in the ID-BL OPDs. Based on dark current and external quantum efficiency (EQE) analysis, the detectivity of the ID-BL OPDs is determined to be 7.60  1011 Jones at 620 nm. This value is 3.4 times higher than that of BHJ OPDs. Furthermore, compared to BHJ OPDs, the ID-BL OPDs exhibited a more consistent spectral response in the range of 400 – 660 nm. The other technique to reduce dark is by utilizing a double electron blocking layer (EBL) fabricated by the sequential deposition of molybdenum (VI) oxide (MoO3) and poly(3,4ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrene-sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS). The double EBL improves the on/off current ratio of BHJ OPD up to 1.36 x 104 at -1V, which is one order of magnitude higher than PEDOT:PSS single EBL (2.45 x 103) and three orders of magnitude higher than that of MoO3 single EBL (7.86). The detectivity at near infrared (800 nm) at -1V is 4.90 x 1011 Jones, which is 2.83 times higher than the PEDOT:PSS single EBL and 2 magnitudes higher compared to the MoO3 single EBL. Despite years of research, not many research been developed that allow the OPDs itself to have color selectivity in one single structure. To solve this issue, in chapter 5, we introduce OFs that can perform as electrode with the function of selective wavelength. With high solubility of TiO2, we able to fabricate OFs with various wavelength-selective from visible to Near-Infrared (NIR) with high transparency (50-70%) and full-with at half maximum (fwhm) around 48 to 82 nm that allow selective wavelength to pass through the OPDs. By choose ternary structure of one donor and two acceptor blending as photoactive layer components, we can enhance the responsivity and improve the detectivity values over 1012 cm.Hz0.5/W. By comparing to semitransparent OPD, OF-OPDs show sharp detectivity at narrowband photon wavelength. This finding can help to reduce the cost by reducing the usage of external OFs in OPDs.;본 논문은 주로 유기 광학 장치에 대한 연구 관심과 연구를 제시한다. 이중 EBL은 PEDOT보다 한 자릿수 높은 -1V에서 BHJ OPD의 ON/OFF 전류비를 최대 1.36 x 104까지 향상시킨다. PSS 싱글 EBL(2.45 x 103)과 MoO3 싱글 EBL(7.86)보다 큰 규모 순이다.
