암석의 조형적 특징을 응용한 패션디자인 연구

Abstract

Nature builds a home for humanity and represents inherent human nature which induces a continuous interaction upon an immense impact on a wide spectrum of the lifestyle of mankind. Since ancient times, the human was profoundly influenced by nature establishing a rich motif for the design concept. The ubiquitous rocks found in nature retain durability with a high density amongst various natural objects by which the rocks form an intimate relationship with human life. The primary rocks in the long history of mankind are naturally formed upon constant weathering and erosion in Mother Nature in which the rocks shape with varied types and distinct formative characteristics. Thus, this study focuses on the formative characteristics of rocks to integrate with the three-dimensional quilting technique incorporated in fashion design. The purpose of the study lies in the attempt of developing an unprecedented design in representing the fashion design that pursues contemporary transition and innovation. The contents and methods employed in this study mainly consist of theoretical view and design production. Based on the theoretical background, the analysis was conducted on the concept, characteristics of rocks, the rock types and formative characteristics with reference to literature, and corresponding cases of modern work have been carefully examined. Also, the concept and types of quilting technique, and its features were identified and compartmentalized to determine modern fashion design that applies to quilting. According to the aforementioned theoretical background, the design was developed and five pieces of fashion design works that incorporate quilting techniques have been produced. The following states the conclusion of the theoretical research through this study. First, while the formative characteristics of rocks were classified into elements of shape, texture, and color, distinguished features of rock types organize as volcanic rock, metamorphic rock, and sedimentary rock. In particular, the texture feature was greatly influenced by petrologic structures. Second, in consideration of the modern cases in fashion design applying the image of rocks, the concentrated application on certain rocks like marble was captured rather than a comprehensive application of all types of rocks, and the expression of texture and color was limited to prioritize more significantly than the shape. A majority of cases showed a large area of garment predominantly filled with the texture of rock surface. Third, the quilting technique is divided into eight types from which a long history derived from the indigenous technique used by local tribes was verified. Among various techniques, plane quilt and patchwork quilt highlighted the unevenness which is a suitable means to manifest a variety of textures. Forth, based on the modern cases in fashion design that applies quilting technique, the previous technique developed in the past was identified to be continuously applied in the modern fashion industry. The conclusion acquired from the work production research for this study is as followed. First, the quilting technique highlighting the morphological characteristics of rocks not only emphasizes the unevenness but facilitates the formation of a unique structure by supporting the overall silhouette of garments. The thickness of the quilting pad particularly determines the changes of three-dimensional structure and allows the creation of volume by partially inserting a filler. Second, the characteristics of rock texture and color were represented through simple editing of photographed images which were then printed using digital textile printing. Simple editing of size enlargement and emphasis on texture contrast enables the effect of dramatic expression of texture and color. Third, from existing fashion design, the representation was limited to rock printing of marble, the printing of high-resolution photographs of various rocks in the process of production confirmed a vast possibility of rock texture. Forth, the integration of digital textile printing and quilting technique in expressing the rock shape and texture, the elevated effect of technique was noticed. Fifth, the adjustment of tone for color expression of rocks allowed dramatic color expression which confirmed the possibility of rich fashion color design through the digital correction process of high-resolution photographs of natural objects. This study incorporates a limited subject for the work experiment as the study focuses on the rock as a natural object in fashion design research. By executing photography and digital editing of precisely collected and classified local rocks as primary motif sources, an abundant amount of design sources is expected to be secured. Also, an active quilting technique is anticipated to be considered to be applied for various sources. ;자연은 인간의 삶의 터전이자 내재되어 있는 본성이며 인류의 생활에 광범위한 영향을 주며 인간과 끊임없이 상호작용한다. 예로부터 인간은 자연에서 깊은 영향을 받아왔으며, 자연은 디자인 발상의 풍부한 모티브가 되고 있다. 자연에서 흔하게 볼 수 있는 암석은 지구에 존재하는 자연물 중 상대적으로 견고하며 내구력이 높아 인간생활과 밀접한 관계를 가지고 있다. 인류와 함께 긴 역사를 보내온 암석은 대자연의 끊임없는 풍화와 침식의 작용을 받으며 자연스럽게 형성됨에 따라 그 종류와 조형적 특징이 매우 뚜렷하고 다양하다. 이에 본 연구는 암석을 대상으로 조형적 특징을 추출하고 이를 입체적 퀼팅 기법과 연결하여 패션디자인으로 응용함으로써 오늘날 변화와 혁신을 추구하는 패션디자인의 표현 세계에 있어 새로운 디자인의 시도를 실행하고자 하는 데에 목적을 두었다. 본 연구의 내용과 방법은 크게 이론적 고찰과 작품 제작으로 구성된다. 먼저 이론적 배경으로 전문서적과 참고문헌을 통해 암석의 개념과 특성, 암석의 종류와 조형적 특징을 분석하고 이를 응용한 현대 패션디자인 작품 사례를 분석한다. 또한 퀼팅 기법의 개념과 종류, 특징을 파악하고 이를 토대로 퀼팅을 활용한 현대 패션디자인 사례를 살펴본다. 앞서 분석한 이론적 배경을 바탕으로 디자인을 전개하고, 암석의 조형적 특징에 따라 퀼팅 기법을 응용한 패션디자인 작품 5벌을 제작하고자 한다. 본 연구의 이론적 연구를 통해 얻은 결론은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 암석의 조형적 특징 분석에 있어서 형태, 질감, 색채의 요소별로 나누어 볼 때 화성암, 변성암, 퇴적암 등 암석의 종류에 따른 특징을 도출할 수 있었다. 특히 형태와 질감의 조형적 특징은 암석의 생성 구조에 큰 영향을 받는 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 암석의 이미지를 응용한 현대의 패션디자인 사례 분석에 의해 암석의 모든 종류를 포괄한 응용보다는 대리석과 같은 특정 암석에 집중된 응용이 대부분으로 포착되었으며 형태보다는 질감과 색채 표현에 충실하도록 한정된 것으로 보였다. 의상의 넓은 면적을 과감하게 암석의 표면 질감으로만 채워 표현한 경우가 다수임을 알 수 있었다. 셋째, 퀼팅 기법은 크게 여덟 가지로 구분이 되었는데 지역별 부족의 고유 기법으로서 형성된 오랜 역사를 확인할 수 있었다. 기법의 종류 중에서 플레인 퀼트와 패치워크 퀼트가 요철감을 강조하면서 다양한 질감 표현으로 적합함을 확인하였다. 넷째, 퀼팅 기법이 적용된 현대 패션디자인 사례를 살펴보았을 때 오랜 역사와 변천 과정을 통해 과거의 기술이 현대 패션산업에 있어서 지속적으로 꾸준히 응용되고 있음을 확인하였다. 본 연구의 작품 제작 연구를 통해 얻은 결론은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 암석의 형태적 특징을 부각시키기 위한 퀼팅 기법은 울퉁불퉁한 요철감을 눈에 띄게 강화하는 역할뿐만 아니라 의상의 전체 실루엣을 힘있게 지탱하면서 특별한 입체 구조를 형성할 수 있게 하는 역할을 해주었다. 특히 퀼팅 패드의 두께에 따라 입체 구조의 변화를 구사할 수 있고 부분적으로 충전재를 추가로 채워 넣음으로써 적극적 양감 표현이 가능하였다. 둘째, 암석의 질감 및 색채 특징은 연구자의 촬영 사진을 간단하게 편집하고 이를 디지털 텍스타일 프린팅으로 구현하는 과정을 통해 표현되었는데, 크기를 확대하고 질감의 대비를 강조하는 편집 과정을 통해 극적인 질감과 색채 표현의 효과를 얻을 수 있었다. 셋째, 기존의 패션디자인에서는 대리석 등 한정된 일부의 암석을 프린팅으로 표현한 것을 확인하였으며 본 연구의 작품 제작에 있어서는 다양한 암석의 고화질로 촬영된 사진 원본을 프린트로 시도함으로써 암석의 질감 발굴에 대한 폭넓은 가능성을 확인할 수 있었다. 넷째, 암석의 형태와 질감 표현에서 디지털 텍스타일 프린팅과 퀼팅 기법이 함께 적용됨으로써 기법의 효과가 극대화되었다. 특히 디지털 텍스타일 프린팅 패턴에 근거하여 퀼팅 봉제선을 계획함으로써 소재 표현의 효과가 크게 부각되었다. 다섯째, 암석의 색채 표현에서 약간의 톤 조절만으로 극적인 색감 표현이 가능 하였으므로 향후 고화질 자연물 촬영과 디지털 보정 작업을 통해서 얻을 수 있는 풍부한 패션 색채디자인의 가능성을 확인하였다. 본 연구는 자연물을 대상으로 암석에 집중한 패션디자인 연구로서 작품 실험의 대상이 일부에 한정된 바 있다. 주요 모티프 원천 대상이 되는 암석을 지역에 근거하여 치밀하게 수집하고 분류한 뒤 촬영과 디지털 편집을 시도한다면 보다 풍성한 디자인 원천 소스를 확보할 수 있을 것으로 사료된다. 또한 이러한 다양한 원천에 대해 보다 더 적극적인 퀼팅 기법의 적용이 수반되어야 할 것이다.
