Abstract
This study was initiated with the awareness that new bathroom environment will emerge because of the advent of smart home technology. The smart home technology has turned housing into a space that operates as more than a mere shelter. A variety of new technologies are being developed, experimented and applied for smart homes. Notably, however, bathrooms have been largely sidelined in these recent changes compared to other human living quarters of homes. The importance of bathrooms in modern homes has been underscored because of increasing recognition of health and sanitization amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to confirm that a future-oriented bathroom will be a space that helps preserve the health of dwellers, especially in the mart home environment. In this process, this study aims to evaluate the value of future-oriented bathrooms based on user experience (UX), and apply design to the concept. The author conducted research on the characteristics of bathroom UX design in a new smart environment and published an article on the topic in an academic journal, which clarified the general direction of the current design of smart bathroom as well as its limitations. Building on the research conducted for the academic journal, this study further develops the UX characteristics of smart bathrooms, and purports to propose a practical design through the spatial design concept that applies the UX characteristics to the actual target sites This thesis is structured as follows. First, Chapter I provides an overview of the thesis, such as the background and purpose of the research, and the scope and method of the research. Smart bathrooms are user-focused or user-centric spaces for comfort, relaxation and health, which are now required to overcome the limitations of conventional bathrooms at a time when our society’s primary concern is to contain the spread of virus and maintain the health of residents. Chapter II then conducts a theoretical review of smart bathrooms and user experience by reviewing relevant literature. The current bathroom represents a cultural conflict between the Western faucet culture and the domestic housing policy, prompting a paradigm shift from the existing, conventional bathrooms. In addition, with the advent of the 4.0 smart home era, smart bathrooms are now drawing keen attention from stakeholders for their new potentials and possibilities. The author attempted to add future-oriented value to the current discussion of smart bathrooms through the application of the user experience concept. In the process of applying the user experience concept in an efficient manner, this study has elicited key characteristics of user experience, categorized those key characteristics, and utilized the honeycomb model shown in previous studies of spatial design. Chapter III engages in case analyses based on the characteristics of the five user experiences elicited and categorized in Chapter II. The smart bathroom design that strengthens the user experience is then expanded by synthesizing the design characteristics and experiences of the users derived from case studies. Examples for the analyses are the smart bathroom space in the sample houses of major construction companies. Each characteristic thus examined could be classified as a type of user experience, and showed a certain degree of correlation with other characteristics. Afterwards, based on the outcome of the comprehensive analyses as above, this thesis examines how these identified characteristics can be understood and applied so as to strengthen the user experience and expand the design expression. Chapter IV then proposes a smart bathroom space design to strengthen the user experience. Based on the comprehensive analyses of the previously selected cases, the author proposes a flexible space for user experience. To this end, the author suggests the application of spatial design in terms of structural, technical, and expressive aspects of smart bathrooms by selecting the size of apartments that meet the purpose of this study. Finally, Chapter V summarizes the final results and key suggestions of the research. Based on the summary, the chapter proposes a future-oriented bathroom that addresses, meets and fulfills critical functions of a household such as cleanliness, hygiene, and safety of the bathroom. This is a bathroom that ultimately strengthens the user experience. Since its first introduction in 1990, smart homes have been developed through active interaction with space. Smart bathrooms are now getting increased attention because of the changing social environment such as spread of the pandemic. In this process, smart bathrooms are learning from the previous experience of smart homes, such as user experience from intelligent smart homes, demand of new services in future bathrooms, and the development of new technologies applicable to bathrooms. Therefore, it is necessary to think about what user-centered value means by strengthening the future bathroom’s relationship with the device in the physical environment, and by considering the sensory expression in the new bathroom environment. This research adds important contribution to the current study in this area in that it seeks to present the direction of the future smart bathroom design by proposing a practical design of smart bathrooms based on the concept of user experience.
