영화 <버드 박스(Bird Box, 2018)>의 음악 분석을 통한 트렌트 레즈너(Trent Reznor)의 음악적 특징 연구

Abstract

본 논문은 작곡가 트렌트 레즈너(Trent Reznor, 1965~)의 음악이 영화 <버드 박스(Bird Box, 2018)>의 스토리텔링에서 가지는 효과에 대한 연구이다. 영화에서 음악과 음향은 영상만큼 중요한 위치에 있고, 그 비중이 점차 커지는 추세이다. 특히 전자악기를 통한 사운드를 제작, 변형하는 것이 수월해지면서 음악뿐 아니라 음향효과를 가공하는 데에도 큰 어려움이 없는 디지털 환경이 잘 조성되고 있다. 이는 영화 속 음악과 음향효과의 경계가 모호해짐을 의미하며, 시간적 매체인 음악에 음향효과로 공간성을 부여할 수 있음을 말한다. 따라서 본 연구자는 음악과 음향효과가 어우러져 영화의 주제와 스토리텔링을 주도하는 영화 <버드 박스>를 연구 주제로 정하였다. 영화의 음악을 작곡한 트렌트 레즈너는 미국 태생으로, 아카데미 수상작인 영화 <소셜 네트워크>로 잘 알려져 있다. 이후 영화 <나를 찾아줘>를 시작으로, 수사네 비르 감독의 영화, <버드 박스>의 음악을 작곡했다. 이 영화는 보이지 않는 존재로부터 탈출하는 주인공 맬러리의 이야기이며, 레즈너는 전자악기의 사용으로 영화의 미스터리한 분위기를 잘 묘사하고 있다. 이러한 영화 속 음악 분석을 통해, 어쿠스틱 악기와 시그널 프로세싱을 거친 전자악기의 사운드가 영화 스토리텔링에 있어서 어떠한 기능을 하는지를 연구의 목적으로 하였다. 연구 절차로, 본 연구자는 먼저 영화 속 사운드의 발전과정과 역할을 파악하였다. 이어서 20세기 영화 속 음악과 음향효과의 비중이 큰 영화들을 살펴보았으며, 작곡가 레즈너에 대해 조사하였다. 그 후 <버드 박스>의 줄거리를 정리하여, 총 상영 시간 중 약 54%에 해당하는 음악을 분석하였는데, 특히 음악과 함께 비중이 큰 음향효과는 그 역할을 분석하기 위해 본 연구자의 임의로 Serum이라는 신시사이저를 통해 제작하였다. 분석을 통한 특징을 요약해보면 다음과 같다. 오프닝 장면에서는, 뚜렷한 메인 음악이 있는 타 영화와는 달리 영화 전체의 두려운 분위기가 음악과 음향효과의 접근을 통하여 설정되었고, 특히 사운드의 음색이 점점 거칠어지면서 영화의 두려운 분위기를 고조시키고 있었다. 또한 탈출이라는 영화의 전개 요소가 날카로운 음향과 스트링의 특수주법으로 나타났으며, 인물 간의 감정 교류는 맑고 부드러운 음색의 악기가 묘사하였다. 마지막으로 소스 음악은 현재와 과거 시점을 전환하는 음악적 도구로 쓰였음을 알 수 있었다. 결론적으로, 레즈너는 전자악기의 음향효과적인 사용을 통해 영화 전체의 분위기를 나타내었고, 이 가운데 음향효과가 영화 서사 구조에 따라 그 음색이 가공되어 음악만큼이나 큰 역할을 하고 있었다. 필터 또는 페이저와 같은 오디오 이펙트가 영화 전개에 따라 가감되면서 전체적인 사운드를 좌지우지하고 있었던 것이다. 이처럼 영화음악의 범위는 오케스트라만이 아닌 전자음악이나 음향효과까지 더 넓게 확대되고 있다. 국내에는 아직 레즈너에 관한 연구가 없으며, 본 연구가 다른 논문과 차별성이 있다고 사료되는 것은, 영화의 음향효과를 임의로 제작하고 재현해보면서 스토리에 따른 사용을 분석했다는 것이다. 끝으로 본 논문이 향후 음악과 음향효과가 어우러진 영화 사운드 연구에 도움이 되고자 함을 의의로 한다.;This thesis is a study on the effect of composer Trent Reznor(1965~)'s music on the storytelling of the movie Bird Box(2018). In movies, music and sound are as important as images, and their proportion is gradually increasing. In particular, as it becomes easier to produce and transform sound through electronic instruments, a digital environment is being created in which there is no great difficulty in processing sound effects as well as music. This means that the boundary between music and sound effects in a movie is blurring, and it means that music, a temporal medium, can be given spatiality through sound effects. Therefore, this researcher has selected the movie Bird Box as the research topic, which leads the storytelling and the theme of the movie by harmonizing music and sound effects. Trent Rezner, who composed the film's music, was an American born, best known for his Academy Award-winning film The Social Network. Afterwards, starting with the movie Gone Girl, he composed the music for Bird Box, directed by Susa Nevir. The film tells the story of the protagonist, Mallory, who escapes from an invisible being, and Trent Rezner uses an electronic musical instrument to portray the mysterious atmosphere of the film. Through this analysis of the music in the movie, the purpose of this study was to investigate the function of acoustic instruments and electronic instruments that have undergone signal processing in the storytelling of movies. As a research procedure, this researcher first identified the development process and role of sound in the movie. Next, we looked at films with a large proportion of music and sound effects in 20th century films, and investigated composer Trent Rezner. After that, the plot of Bird Box was organized and the music corresponding to about 54% of the total running time was analyzed. Reproduced through The characteristics of the analysis can be summarized as follows. In the opening scene, unlike other movies with a distinct main music, the overall frightening atmosphere of the movie was set through the approach of music and sound effects, and in particular, the tone of the sound gradually grew harsher, heightening the frightening atmosphere of the movie. In addition, the elements of the movie called Escape were shown by the sharp sound and special playing method of strings, and the emotional exchange between the characters was portrayed by instruments with clear and soft tones. Finally, it was found that the source music was used as a musical tool to switch between the present and the past. In conclusion, Trent Rezner expressed the overall atmosphere of the film through the acoustic use of electronic instruments, and among them, the sound effect played a major role as the music as its tone was processed according to the film's narrative structure. Audio effects such as filters or phasor were controlling the overall sound as the movie progressed. As such, the scope of film music is expanding not only to orchestra, but also to electronic music and sound effects. There is no research on Trent Rezner in Korea yet, and what is considered to be different from other papers in this study is that the sound effects of movies were arbitrarily produced and reproduced, and the use according to the story was analyzed. Finally, it is meaningful that this thesis will be helpful in future research on the sound of movies that harmonize music and sound effects.
