영화 <스노우 화이트 앤 더 헌츠맨 (Snow White And The Huntsman)>에 나타난 제임스 뉴튼 하워드의 음악적 특징 연구

Abstract

본 논문은 영화 <스노우 화이트 앤 더 헌츠맨, 2012>의 음악을 담당한 작곡가 제임스 뉴튼 하워드(James Newton Howard, 1951-)의 음악적 특징과 영상과 음악의 상관관계에 관한 연구이다. 제임스 뉴튼 하워드는 전통 클래식 음악을 기반으로 현대에 이르기까지 140편 이상의 다양한 장르의 작품을 담당하여 할리우드에서 활발한 활동을 이어오고 있는 작곡가이다. 본 연구자는 <스노우 화이트 앤 더 헌츠맨>의 음악분석을 통해 하워드가 어떠한 음악적 요소를 사용하여 판타지 영화의 환상적인 장면을 묘사하고 있으며 감독의 연출 의도에 따른 음악의 역할이 무엇인지 연구하고자 한다. 영화 <스노우 화이트 앤 더 헌츠맨>은 원작동화 『백설공주』를 각색한 작품으로 권선징악적인 주제를 담고 있는 판타지 실사영화이다. 하워드의 음악적 성향을 분석하기에 앞서 동화를 원작으로 한 할리우드 실사영화의 제작 배경과 음악적 특징에 대해 살펴보았고 동화의 정의와 분류, 그리고 디즈니 애니메이션으로 재창조되어 오늘날 실사화되기까지의 과정과 작품들에 대해 연구하였다. 그리고 영화의 서사구조를 발단, 전개, 위기, 절정, 결말의 단계로 나누고 장면과 음악의 In & Out을 파악하여 영화의 장면과 음악의 상관관계를 연구하고 음악분석을 통해 판타지 영화에 나타난 제임스 뉴튼 하워드의 음악적 특징을 알아보고자 하였다. 그 결과 하워드의 음악은 대부분 상황에 따라 전개되었으며 무성영화 시대에 유행했던 wall-to-wall 방식을 사용하여 음악이 장면의 변화에 따라 스토리텔링의 기능을 하고 있다. 그리고 주요 인물의 라이트모티브(Leitmotif)를 설정하여 영화 전반의 대립구조를 강조하였고 그 인물들의 성격과 분위기를 음악적으로 묘사하였다. 또한 다양한 현대음악의 특수기법과 음향 사운드를 구현하여 효과음적으로 표현하였으며 다채로운 음색과 혼합박자의 사용 등 그만의 음악적 어법을 적절히 사용하여 판타지 영화의 장면을 음악으로 더욱 환상적이게 만들어주었다. 본 논문의 연구를 통해 제임스 뉴튼 하워드의 음악에 대한 연구가 체계적으로 이루어지길 기대하며, 앞으로 있을 하워드의 다른 작품들에 관한 연구를 하는 모든 이들에게 도움이 되길 바라는 바이다.;The study represents the correlation between musical characteristics and video of the film Snow White and the Huntsman(2012) which is composed by James Newton Howard(1951-). James Newton Howard is a classical based composer who has been composed more than 140 works in various genres in Hollywood movies. Through the music analysis of Snow White and the Huntsman, this researcher intends to focus on the musical elements how Howard uses to describe fantasy film and the role of music, according to the director’s intention. This thesis is a study on the musical characteristics of composer James Newton Howard in charge of the music of the film Snow White and the Huntsman, and the correlation between images and music. This film is an adaptation of the original fairy tale, Snow White, and is a fantasy live-action film with a tragic theme. Before analyzing Howard's musical propensity, we looked at the production background and musical characteristics of a Hollywood live-action film based on a fairy tale. In addition, by dividing the narrative structure of the film into stages of inception, development, crisis, climax, and ending, understanding the in and out of scenes and music, the correlation between the scenes and music of the movie and figure out musical characteristics of Howard through music analysis with appeared in fantasy films. As a result, most of Howard's music was developed according to the situation, and using the wall-to-wall method popular in the silent film era, the music functions as a storytelling function according to the change of the scene. And by setting the leitmotif of the main characters, the overall structure of the film was emphasized, and the characters' personalities and moods were musically described. In addition, he implemented various modern music special techniques and sound effects to express sound effects, and he used his own musical language, such as the use of various tones and mixed beats, to make the scenes of a fantasy movie more fantastic with music. It is hoped that the study of James Newton Howard's music will be systematically conducted through the research of this thesis, and it is hoped that it will be helpful to all who are researching other works of Howard in the future.
