영화 <인디펜던스 데이(Independence Day)>에 나타난 작곡가 데이빗 아놀드(David Arnold)의 음악적 특징 연구

Abstract

본 논문은 작곡가 데이빗 아놀드(David Arnold, 1962~)가 작곡을 담당한 영화 <인디펜던스 데이<(Independence Day), 1996>의 음악적 특징에 관한 연구이다. 데이빗 아놀드는 액션, 멜로, 공포, 미스테리, 공상과학, 판타지, 드라마 등 다양한 장르를 가리지 않고 영국 TV 시리즈와 할리우드 영화 부문에서 활발히 활동하고 있는 영화음악 작곡가이다. 영국 출신의 신인 작곡가였던 그가 할리우드에 진출과 동시에 상업적인 대작 영화들을 연이어 맡으며 성공적으로 입지를 다질 수 있었던 이유를 영화 <인디펜던스 데이>의 음악분석을 통해 알아보고자 한다. 본 작품의 음악적 특징을 분석하기에 앞서 데이빗 아놀드가 활동한 시기의 할리우드 음악적 경향을 살펴보았고 이를 토대로 동시대에 활동하였던 대표 작곡가와 작품들을 음악적 특징에 따라 구분 지어 알아보았다. 이를 통해 작곡가의 음악사적 위치를 파악할 수 있었으며, 그 외에 자세한 음악적 배경과 음악적 경향은 작곡가의 생애와 작품세계 연구를 통해 알 수 있었다. 본론에서는 <인디펜던스 데이>의 전체 줄거리를 발단, 전개, 위기, 절정, 결말로 나누어 정리하였으며 음악의 인 앤 아웃이 삽입된 큐시트에 따른 각 장면의 구체적인 분석을 통해 음악적 기능과 그에 따른 음악 기법들을 분석하였다. 연구 결과 영화 <인디펜던스 데이>의 음악은 영화 감독의 정확한 작품 의도에 입각한 주요 주제와 그 외 스토리를 이끌어가는 주요 인물, 주요 소재에 관한 모티브를 설정하였으며, 이러한 모티브들을 통해 전체적인 스토리를 이끌어가고 있었다. 이를 통해 영화의 주제와 메시지를 효과적으로 전달하였으며 복잡한 구조의 스토리텔링을 강화하였다. 또한 각각의 모티브들은 스토리에 따라 유기적으로 결합하거나 재배치되어 전체적인 분위기를 조성하였으며, 상황에 따라 음색적, 음향적, 화성적 변화가 더해져 미세한 분위기와 공간적 음향까지 구체적으로 담아냈다. 음악은 재난 블록버스터 영화의 고전적인 서사 구조를 따르기 위해 관현악 3관 편성의 심포닉 사운드로 구현되었지만, 모티브 사용 방식에 있어서는 현 시대의 감각적인 음악 어법이 사용되었으며 공상과학적인 소재와 화면만으로 파악이 어려운 장면들은 어쿠스틱 악기들의 독창적인 음색과 현대음악적인 특수주법을 활용하여 작곡가만의 고유한 색채를 구현해냈다. 본 연구는 국내에서 거의 연구된 바 없는 작곡가 데이빗 아놀드에 대한 논문이라는데 의의를 둘 수 있으며, 앞으로도 그의 다양한 작품의 체계적인 연구가 이어지길 기대하며 본 논문이 데이빗 아놀드의 영화음악을 연구하는데 있어 많은 도움이 되기를 바란다.;This study presents the musical characteristics of the film <Independence Day, 1996)> composed by composer David Arnold (1962~ ). David Arnold is a film music composer who has been actively working in the British TV series and Hollywood film sectors, regardless of genres such as action, melodrama, horror, mystery, science fiction, fantasy, and drama. Through the music analysis of the movie <Independence Day>, we tried to find out why, as a new composer from England, David Arnold was able to successfully establish his position by taking on large commercial masterpieces at the same time as he entered Hollywood. Before analyzing the musical characteristics of this work, we looked at the musical trends of Hollywood during David Arnold was active, and based on this, representative composers and works that were active at the same time were classified according to their musical characteristics. Through this, it was possible to grasp the composer's position in the music history, and in addition, detailed musical background and musical trends could be known through the study of the composer's life and the world of work. In the main body, the entire plot of <Independence Day> is divided into beginning, development, crisis, climax, and ending, and the musical function and its musical techniques were analyzed through a detailed analysis of each scene according to the cue sheet into which the music in and out was inserted. As a result of the study, the music of the movie <Independence Day> set the main theme based on the precise intention of the film director, the main characters who lead the story, and the main material motifs, and the overall story was led through these motifs. Through this, the theme and message of the movie were effectively delivered and the storytelling of a complex structure was strengthened. In addition, each motif was organically combined or rearranged according to the story to create an overall atmosphere. Depending on the situation, tonal, acoustic, and harmonic changes were added to specifically capture the subtle atmosphere and spatial sound. The music was implemented as a symphonic sound composed of three orchestras to follow the classic narrative structure of the disaster blockbuster movie, but the sensual musical language of the present age was used in the method of using the motif. And scenes that were difficult to grasp only with sci-fi materials and screens have embodied the composer's own unique colors by utilizing the original tone of acoustic instruments and modern special techniques. This study can be significant in that it is a thesis on composer David Arnold, who has rarely been studied in Republic of Korea, and we hope that this thesis will be of great help in studying David Arnold's film music in the future.
